Customer Review: Best Buy for an Instant Read Thermometer

You can spend a lot more for an instant read meat thermometer, but you won't find a more useful one.
This is well designed, and gives a temperature reading in about 2 seconds, much faster than the other so-called "instant read" thermometers that take about 20 seconds.
It also is very easy to change the battery. No tiny screws to fiddle with, just an easy open access panel.
Nice probe cover too.
It's a best buy in my book.

I bought this thermometer because of the price (Who can afford spending $100 on a thermometer?) It is great when it works, if it works. I changed the battery twice (not an easy task) to make sure that was not the problem. Sometimes the thing turns on, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I find it ON in the drawer (I don't believe in ghosts...)
Sometimes it shuts itself off in the middle of a reading. I don't use it anymore, it is going straight to the Salvation Army.

I use this thermometer several times daily beginning with measuring the water temperature of water for both coffee and green tea. Correct temperature is very necessary when preparing green tea. It is also used during family baking. When a problem with my older unit arose, the company sent replacements (twice) with absolutely no problem. This thermometer quickly and accurately shows me the temperature of food. That's especially helpful when I'm trying to figure out whether to take beef off the grill to make sure it's medium rare instead of medium. It works a lot better than the cheaper thermometers I have used in the past where I had to hold them in the steak for what seemed like a minute or so, while my hand was scorching from the heat.

I use it for everything: meat, casseroles or anything where an internal temperature is important (or even just nice to have). It is amazing. It provides a really quick read so I don't have to stand and wait. A very large temperature display window makes reading the number easy and there is never any confusion about what the number is. This thermometer was highly recommended by Cook's Illustrated, deservedly so.
