Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of CDN Q2-450x Proaccurate Quicktip Digital Thermometer on a rope, Black.Customer Review: Love It Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great thermometer. It responds VERY quickly, 1-2 seconds, and is invaluable! It comes with a handly case that I hang from a hook on the fridge. It is always handy and gives very quick, accurate results. The sensor is in the very tip, so it measures the temp where you stick it and if you are measuring the temp of a liquid, it does not need to be inordinately deep. Some thermometers are not happy unless half of their probe is covered. The Thermapen is supposed to be a bit faster, but it costs 4 times more. For the price, this one cannot be beat.
Two years later: Still my favorite thermomter. I am updating this to say something about the waterproof nature of this thermometer. I don't really trust anything electronic to be truly waterproof, so I never submerge it. However, this thing got a trial by deep fry oil. I accidently dropped it into 375 degree oil, and it ended up LCD side down (of course). I fished it out immediately, washed the whole thing with soapy water, and to my surprise, no harm done.
Customer Review: Perfect Thermometer Summary: 5 Stars
I dont know what I was doing before I had this. I can literally now cook steak, burgers, chicken, pork, lamb or whatever to the exact temperature that my guests want. Just last night I had two nice steaks on my Lodge Logic Pro 20-by-10-7/16-Inch Cast-Iron Grill/Griddle and my gf wanted medium rare and I wanted medium. Good thing I could check on the back of the thermometer and see that medium rare for beef is 145 degrees, I stuck in the thermometer and I knew I had 4 more degrees to perfection.
The thermometer came in a plastic clamshell with my other amazon goods and had a starter battery to get me going (probably will last a while too). This thing is super easy to use, press power, stick it in the meat and wait 2-5 seconds. The cover part has a quick little guide (might be hard to read for some) with temperatures of doneness for all kinds of meat.
The little red string has an eye hole so this will forever be hanging from a cabinet door handle in my kitchen. Brought my cooking ability to another level.
Customer Review: pice of garbage that will break a few weeks after you buy it Summary: 1 Stars
This thermometer worked great AT FIRST, but beware... if your oven is a moderate 325 degrees (verified by my oven thermometer, by the way), and you go to take the temperature of a loaf of bread, if the thermometer gets anywhere near the heat of the oven, it will stop working. The first time this happened, it stopped working and then recovered soon after. The second time, I was taking the temperature of a pork chop... I used tongs to lift the pork off the pan so the thermometer wouldn't be too close to the heat, but I guess I hadn't lifted it enough because it started to go haywire and hasn't worked since.
The bottom line is to not let this thermometer get close to hot things. So what is it good for? Taking the temperature of tepid water, making sure your refrigerated food is not in the danger zone, and making sure your water is not too hot for proofing yeast. So no, I would not really recommend buying it unless you plan on exclusively using it in a cold to lukewarm setting.
Customer Review: Good and bad Summary: 3 Stars
Pro:
When it works, it works like it's supposed to (although a little slower).
Good price.
Con:
Brand new, it's not unusual for them to be defective.
If held over *any* heat or steam, the display freezes. Usually fixed by turning off then on, a problem if you're, say, tempering chocolate.
I've been through 4 of these in the last 5 months. Used with care, they all broke or malfunctioned.
What irks me most is my last one went wonky and displayed all L's. Neither replacing the battery or recalibrating helped. I emailed CDN (from their website) asking for help but never got a response.
Customer Review: Great little thermometer Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not sure why people would pay 5x more for a quick read digital thermometer but this little guy does the job superbly. Cooking all kinds of meats is now a joy rather then a burden. The wife never complains about her steak being too rare. And any good chef who still uses a palm test for meats is kidding themselves this is the way to go.
The temp reads accurately and within 3-4 seconds. Would be nice to have a back lite in the future as getting temps on the grille at night can prove tricky but thats only a minor gripe and I don't know of any other thermometer that offers this option anyway.
