Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of CDN DTTC Digital Thermometer, Timer & ClockCustomer Review: Unbelievably difficult to set Summary: 2 Stars
I'm a very tech oriented guy. I usually can easily set the digital readouts on any machine. When I see a blinking 12:00 at a friend's house, I offer to set it for them and have never been unsuccessful in setting any readout without the instructions. This thing is very hard to remember how to set the time and temperatures that you want the alert to sound at. How to set it is simply not clear at all. I even found the instructions on line and I STILL don't understand.
I found the instructions on line http://www.cdn-timeandtemp.com/pdf/products/DTTCen.pdf but it hasn't helped me understand how to get what I want.
I wish it just said "temp to beep at" and let me set that. This upper/lower business doesn't make sense to me. Maybe it will eventually sink in.
It does still read the temperatures very well. So I use it to calibrate my oven every time I bake. I can watch it to make sure it's done preheating before I put my baked goods in.
I haven't had the problem with the magnets falling off. My fridge is next to the oven so I often put it on fridge instead of the oven, especially if using the stove at the same time. I think the magnets are likely to fall off if it gets too warm. It would probably melt the insides and cause it to malfunction if you let it get too warm also. If your stove top stays cool while baking, you can lay it flat on the stove top, so gravity isn't pulling on the magnets if it gets warm. The digital read out part folds up so you can see it from the front, when it's laying flat.
I really hate that it only reads up to 392 F. I have many times where I want to heat the oven to 425 or 450 and it simply doesn't read that high. I also use it when cooling down sorbet or ice cream custard before I freeze it. Just drop the probe in it and close the fridge on the cable. Keep the read out on the front of the fridge and you will be able to see when it's cool enough transfer to your ice cream freezer. It takes much longer than you'd expect to cool down a liquid.
It should also go below 14 f to check freezer temps.
It works ok, but there are probably better ones with an easier user interface.

The timer can be set to go off when the meat reaches a desired internal temperature; the 7-inch stainless-steel probe stays in the roast during cooking, with the oven door closing right over the flexible 39-inch cable. The digital thermometer/timer is also useful for candy-making: the clip attaches the probe to the side of a saucepan, and again, the alarm can be programmed to sound after a certain number of minutes or when a particular temperature is reached. Different sounds for the timer and thermometer alarms avoid confusion. The LED screen displays three readings: the current time with seconds in large digits, internal food temperature, and the set temperature. A switch changes the scale from Fahrenheit to Celsius, with a temperature range of 14 to 392 degrees Fahrenheit (?10 to 200 degrees Celsius). A hinge in the 4-3/4-by-2-3/4-inch control module allows it to sit upright on a countertop or stovetop, while magnetic strips on the back secure it to a metal surface. Buttons are clearly marked and instructions provided for setting temperatures and the count-up/count-down timer. The device is also useful for testing the accuracy of oven temperatures so that settings and cooking times can be adjusted accordingly. A two-year warranty covers the device against defects. One AA battery is included for operation.--Ann Bieri
