Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother PED-Basic Software for Downloading Embroidery DesignsCustomer Review: Excellent Card Reader/Writer Summary: 5 Stars
I've been doing machine embroidery for about 5 years, and just purchased my first Brother machine (which I absolutely adore). Before that, I have 2 other machines, and I used card readers/writers by Amazing Box. My first one broke. The second one still works. But, these Amazing Box products are amazingly flimsy, light and cheap. The software barely works with any operating system, and trying to used the things was always on a hope and a prayer.
Then, because I want everything to be just perfect with my new and expensive Brother machine, I bought the PED Basic box with blank card media. I plugged it into my USB, loaded the software, and transferred a design from my computer to the card without having to even look at any instructions. The card then went into my machine, the machine picked out the design, and everything stitched flawlessly.
The PED Basic card reader/writer is small and compact, but has a good amount of weight to it. It feels sturdy and of high quality. It is fast and simple to use. So, even if I didn't have 2 inferior products to compare this to, I'd still have to give this box 5 stars.
And, you definitely can't beat the price at Amazon! Now, I just have to find an additional blank card, since I like to have 2 or 3 of them "just in case".
Customer Review: PED BASIC - NON USER FRIENDLY Summary: 1 Stars
I was pretty juiced up to get this software. You get this Embroidery Magic 2 software and the PED BASIC card reader. But that is not all you need. You also need to find and download this Tajima Ambassador program. It doesn't come with the software. So out of the box you are left hanging by brother. So now you have 3 possibilities where things can go wrong. Oh and they will. You'll spend all morning long, making this embroidery design, then go to make the PES files with ambassador. Then maybe you will be able to see these PES files with the card reader and maybe you won't. I haven't been able to figure this mystery out yet. You will pull your hair out, immensely. And I understand that if the embroidery design is bigger than 4x4 the PED BASIC won't see it. I make them 2x2 and it still won't see it. TOTAL GARBAGE!!!!!
Even after the software is updated it still will not show the PES files
with the card reader. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't.
You will NOT be happy with this software. You'll waste alot of your
precious time dorking around with this stuff ...
Find something better, altho I'm not sure what else to recommend ....
Customer Review: Vista Issues ... Summary: 2 Stars
The PED card reader is just a card reader that was created by Brother to read/write their own proprietary cards for their sewing machines. The software included is simply a software that you use to transfer pes files onto the cards.
Brother is way behind on updating the software for the PED card writer. Not only do they not include Vista with the card writer, the current version and drivers for Vista - available on their Web site - runs on Vista 64, but all instructions and help are designed for Vista 32 and will not work on 64.
At the same time, unless your brother has a USB port, this is the only solution to adding new designs to your Brother Machine. Just be sure to download the correct software off of the brother help site at welcome.solutions.brother dot com so that you can use this driver with your computer.
So - you have only two choices - buy the brother proprietary card writer or don't write cards to transfer new embroidery files to your sewing machine. [If you haven't purchased one of their sewing machines, you may want to compare prices to see if one with a USB port will serve you better]
Customer Review: Works, at a price! Summary: 2 Stars
I gave this product a low rating more for its value than its performance.
The product does what it is supposed to do, it allows you to transfer designs to your machine and in that respect you just can't do without it (Brother got you by you know what...).
The software that comes with it is at best 'primitive' and offers no editing capabilities what so ever. The user interface would be considered state of the art around 1990!
It only organizes your designs, and then very poorly.
Transferring designs to the card is also primitive. You can not add designs to the card cumulatively for it erases the card every time prior to writing to it!
Al in all, at its current price, a serious ripoff. Unfortunately it is all you got if you want to load new designs into your machine.
I feel that at $100++ it is way overpriced, the package's true value should be somewhere between $25 and $50.
Customer Review: Not what I expected Summary: 2 Stars
I thought I would be able to create my own designs but the software this came with does not allow that. I think I would have to have version 8 to create (not entirely sure) but this one came with version 1 (can only DOWNLOAD pre-made designs from the Brother website). The device itself was handy but the embroidering choices the software came with were nothing really interesting for my taste and the website wasn't much better (all flowery and "lovey Dovey" with a few cheesy holiday designs). I don't know why brother just doesn't designing their sewing machines to read SD cards instead of their own proprietary cards. That would save a lot more money and make things easier and convenient... I actually regret purchasing this bundle with the version 1 software but I don't regret the reader. I suggest looking for a reader that includes version 8 software or any version that actually ALLOWS you to create your own design.
