Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother CS6000i Sew Advance Sew Affordable 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing MachineCustomer Review: Great for novices. Summary: 5 Stars
I honestly don't sew much. I didn't think I could sew until I got this machine. In fact, I bought myself another machine years ago that I gave to my mom, because it was so hard to use. I just thought I couldn't sew.
My son is now in scouts and they have so many patches to sew on. I decided I needed another sewing machine. Wow. I'm glad I got this one. It's so easy to use, even for a novice like me. I couldn't sew a straight line before, but now it's easy. I even made my son a sleeping bag with buttons and an attached pillowcase. I sew all my son's patches and do all the mending. It's so easy. I simply follow the instructions that came with the machine.
Threading couldn't be simpler. There's a diagram imprinted on the top of the machine for reference. The automatic needle threaded works like a charm. The bobbin winds easily and all I have to do is drop it in and pull the thread through and it's done. I remember the days when my mom, a seamstress, would have to thread her own machine. What a pain that was. Glad I don't have to do it.
There are so many different feet that it comes with and all the necessary tools. I can choose the stitches by looking on the side of the machine and punching the button to match and the screen tells me which foot I need for that stitch. Cool.
This is the best investment in a sewing machine I've ever made. So easy to use, lightweight, comes with everything I need, and a great instruction book.
Customer Review: Great Sewing Machine for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't sewn in about 20 years, but wanted to learn to quilt. I am really enjoying using this sewing machine. I've only had it about a month, but have used it quite a bit. I was a little concerned because it is very light-weight and the foot pedal is flimsy plastic. Don't expect industrial-strengh quality, here. But then, it's not a $1000 machine, either. For basic house-hold use, it does the job. I've found it very easy to use with several nice features that make it especially enjoyable. I found the User's manual easy to understand and it also provided excellent reasons why some people may have experienced the problems documented in other reviews, such as bobbin jamming, needle breaking, etc. I haven't had any problems with that yet, by the way. I love the electronic stitch selection, the speed adjustment, the needle down option and the automatic needle threader. Sometimes, it's the little things that make the biggest difference. Also, someone mentioned not receiving a 1/4 inch seam foot. I ordered one from another site just to use on this machine. It works fine, but I've found that the machine has 2 built-in 1/4 inch piecing stitches to use with the regular "J" foot on the machine and I actually prefer using stitch #37 rather than the special quarter inch foot. It seems to result in a "truer" 12.5 inch block whereas the quarter inch foot always seemed to result in slightly smaller blocks. All in all, I'm pleased with this sewing machine.
Customer Review: Great machine, will make me a better sewer! Summary: 5 Stars
I never knew how bad my old machine was until I used my aunt's machine. Ever since then, almost a year, I have been looking for a replacement. After much research, I was surprised to find that this inexpensive machine is the best reviewed on Amazon while other, more expensive machines had bad reviews. I was so happy when I added this machine to my cart and I was not let down when it arrived at my doorstep.
The first thing that I noticed was the light weight. It should be very easy to take this machine with me. Second, I set it up in my sewing room and it looked great. I resisted starting right away. I pulled out the manual and read it cover-to-cover, which I highly recommend, especially if you have not had a machine with so many functions before OR if you have never had an electronic machine.
Some other reviewers commented that they were unhappy that this did not include a 1/4 inch foot, but you can achieve a perfect 1/4 inch seam with the piecing stitch, I had already ordered a 1/4 inch foot which I don't really need now. After reading the manual, which is very comprehensive, I learned that I will be able to use my sewing machine to make me a better sewer. The stitching is so precise, the machine feeds so evenly, there is a specific stitch that will work best for each kind of difficult of fabric, and it includes all the attachments you will ever need.
Good-bye old machine, hello new beautiful Brother.
Customer Review: One caution... Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Brother CS600i as a Christmas gift for my wife after reading lots of reviews and consumer ratings. So far the sewing machine appears to live up to our expectations, and it seems to be an excellent value when features & price are compared to other general use & quilting machines out there. One note and one caution...
Note: Some user reviews referenced an instruction DVD. Ours did not come with one, nor does there appear to be a video on the Brother website. The paper instruction manual and quick start guide however seem to cover everything we have needed to know so far.
Caution: I selected the CS-6000i [over another Brother model] primarily because of the included accessories. Having just about every accessory foot we might ever need is great (too bad there is not a better storage compartment; the "bag" design is a slight disappointment). The included "case" is my complaint. I called Brother and confirmed that there is no bottom -- it is really just a hard/protective "cover". Since all of the accessories and the quilting table don't fit inside, the cover is not really even useful for storage. You even have to remove the thread spool before placing the cover over the machine. If you want what most of us would call a "case" (i.e. top & latch-on bottom) for transporting in the car etc., you will need to purchase a separate universal cover or sewing machine tote.
Customer Review: Rattling bobbin drives me crazy...but I love it. Summary: 4 Stars
This is my first sewing machine and I do love it. I've made a quilt and a shirt with it so far. The only thing about it that I can't stand is the noise that the bobbin makes whenever you sew fast. The bobbin bounces around like crazy (especially when low on thread) and makes the most awful sound. I bought this machine about a month ago, and am already looking for an upgrade.
That being said, it really is a nice machine if you can use some earplugs. I'll keep it for a long time as I look for my next sewing machine. It's super easy to sew with, comes with a TON of presser feet and has bunches of stitches (though I'm not sure I will ever use 3/4 of them).
A great value, as noisy as it is.
PS--if anyone has any suggestions on how to solve my noisy bobbin woes (besides sewing slowly) please let me know! I've adjusted the tension to both extremes and it didn't help. And yes, the bobbin is loaded correctly. ;o)
Update 12/5/10 - I think I figured out the rattling bobbin issue. The bobbins that came with my machine aren't very smooth around the edges and I think that the thread is getting caught, pulling the bobbin and making it spin like crazy in the casing, hitting the bobbin cover. I bought some generic plastic bobbins (not the kind made especially for this model). They are a little smaller, so I stuck a penny under the bobbin. No more rattling!
