Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother CS6000i Sew Advance Sew Affordable 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing Machine

Customer Review: 1 1/2 years later... and still LOVING this machine
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally bought this about 1 1/2 years ago to make curtains for my son's house (which is about all I knew how to use a sewing machine for) It was so easy to set up and use. The best features I would say are the needle threader and the drop in bobbin... wow what a difference from the machine I learned on where threading the machine took as long as the sewing project! Oh and changing the feet is SO easy, just push a button for it to fall off, and snap the new one on!
Well, after the curtain project was finished the machine was packed up and put in the storage room for about a year. I recently dug it out and made a permanent home for it in the office. Naturally, I couldn't find the owners manual for it so I went on line to Brothers support web site and there was a free download of the manual. I have to say that it is one of the best manuals I've seen. It not only covers the nitty gritty of the machine, but it also covers many aspects of sewing~ teaching you how to do several things in simple to follow directions. After a year in storage my machine was ready to go, just wipe it off and thread it. No oiling etc. I have now made several projects and am anxious to make many more. I LOVE this machine, I spent a lot of time trying to research different ones before I bought this one, and I couldn't be happier with my choice.
Tip if you are still considering a purchase: you can go to Brothers web site and download the owner's manual, it will give you lots of great information and show you what comes with it etc.

Customer Review: Great for beginners!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I pretty much know nothing about sewing. I even had to look up the definition of "basting." The last time I used a machine was in 7th grade- I'm almost 40 now. So after hours of research, this machine seemed like a no-brainer. It got rave reviews on other sites as ell as here on Amazon.

This is a BARGAIN! I mainly want to make quilts- a life-long dream. But I also want to make things for my home (like new nursery bedding for our next baby) and maybe clothes for my children. This machine can do all of this- no real need for another machine- or many accessories. It comes with almost every presser foot except the 1/4 quilting foot or you will need to purchase this separately. The Brother site has a list of all available add-ons.

The light is bright enough in a well-lit room, the screen is easy to use, and the weight makes it easy to move from room to room if you don't have a designated sewing room or table (I'm using my dining room table).

I have only had the machine for a few days, but after reading the manual I am able to thread the bobbin and needle (without using the automatic features). The manual is easy to follow and took a lot of intimidation out of starting.

Basically, I had almost a phobia about turning this on and making the needle move. But after only a couple hours of reading the manual, practicing threading the machine, I was able to make a place mat and a pocket/sleeve to keep sewing tools. They don't look so great, but it was fun to practice and use the machine.

Customer Review: Dandy Fine Machine
Summary: 5 Stars

When I purchased this sewing machine I had visited a quilting forum and there were several members who had the machine and gave it a really good report. Now that I have used it for a couple of weeks, all I can say is "WOW", what a machine. So far it has been a real workhorse for me. I needed a light weight portable sewing machine because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I wanted to make a regular size quilt for my niece who is a missionary in Africa. I needed a portable machine so I could use the dining room table to support the weight of the quilt as I worked. I am so pleased with this machine that I hope it lasts me a very long time. My other sewing machine is in a cabinet and it is great for making doll dresses for my granddaughters and also for quilting small baby quilts but now that I have this one, well, this is my choice for a number of reasons. It has 3 different speeds, a variety of different stitches and the needle stops in the down position. But mostly, I like the slow speed especially for quilting. I have much better control because of my RA when I use the slow speed. If you are thinking of buying a good, portable sewing machine, I would definitely recommend this one. The next best thing about this machine is all of the accessories that come with it. If you are thinking of doing some quilting you will love that the free motion quilting foot and the walking foot come with the machine. This alone is a saving of approximately $50. I just don't think that you could go wrong with this machine.

Customer Review: Great for novices.
Summary: 5 Stars

I honestly don't sew much. I didn't think I could sew until I got this machine. In fact, I bought myself another machine years ago that I gave to my mom, because it was so hard to use. I just thought I couldn't sew.

My son is now in scouts and they have so many patches to sew on. I decided I needed another sewing machine. Wow. I'm glad I got this one. It's so easy to use, even for a novice like me. I couldn't sew a straight line before, but now it's easy. I even made my son a sleeping bag with buttons and an attached pillowcase. I sew all my son's patches and do all the mending. It's so easy. I simply follow the instructions that came with the machine.

Threading couldn't be simpler. There's a diagram imprinted on the top of the machine for reference. The automatic needle threaded works like a charm. The bobbin winds easily and all I have to do is drop it in and pull the thread through and it's done. I remember the days when my mom, a seamstress, would have to thread her own machine. What a pain that was. Glad I don't have to do it.

There are so many different feet that it comes with and all the necessary tools. I can choose the stitches by looking on the side of the machine and punching the button to match and the screen tells me which foot I need for that stitch. Cool.

This is the best investment in a sewing machine I've ever made. So easy to use, lightweight, comes with everything I need, and a great instruction book.

Customer Review: Nice little machine for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I love sewing machines and have 7 that I regularly use. Some are industrial for faster or heavier sewing but I like to have a little basic one for just sewing clothes. I was really excited to see all of the different stitches and features on this one. I really liked the different speed switch. I liked the several different feet as well as the walking foot, that was a real bonus since I paid $65.00 just for that on another machine that I had. It seems kind of lightweight so I was a bit hesitant of putting it at full speed to sew and I did break the twin needle just trying out the stitches that you use with that. The sewing light is quite dim. The decorative stitches don't look great but the basic stitches work and look good. You really need to use quality thread or it doesn't work as well. I really like how easy it is to thread and program in the stitch that you want to use. This is a great machine for a beginner and the manual is great at explaining what each stitch is used for. I like the larger attachment as well for having a greater surface area to sew on as well as being able to remove it and have the free arm for sleeves etc. I did not have any trouble with the bobbin or tension as others have mentioned. All in all it seems to be a nice machine, I did decide though to give this one to one of our daughters for Christmas instead of keeping it. I have other machines that will do what this does but I paid a few thousand more for it. For the money its a great machine.
