Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother CS6000i Sew Advance Sew Affordable 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing MachineCustomer Review: Don't let the low price fool you. This is a great machine! Summary: 5 Stars
This machine represents the most incredible value-for-money on the market today. It is very, very easy to use, and the manual is exceptionally helpful. It comes with every foot and accessory you could ever possibly need. In fact, there is nothing more you can buy for it. Compare that to the other sewing machine manufacturers, which give you only the most basic feet and then you must purchase everything else separately. If you have been hankering for the convenience of fully computerized sewing, automatic needle threading, push-button sewing, and lots of fun stitches, don't hesitate. I highly recommend this machine. I've owned very expensive machines from all the top manufacturers, and would not recommend it if the stitches were not beautiful or if it were loud or junky. This was given to me as a gift (I'm ashamed to say I would probably have walked right past it because of its low price) and I love it so much, I have gone on to buy the Brother serger here on Amazon, and also a $999.00 Brother Innovis, which is another tremendous bargain. I was really pleased to see that even the more expensive machine uses the same bobbins and feet as this one, and this has many of the same features. This $200 machine comes iwth virtually all the same attachments as the $1000 one.
This is the machine that some of the larger sewing and quilting expos are using in their workshops now because they are so lightweight, easy to learn, and reliable. High end Berninas and Vikings are just too complicated for people to sit down and learn at in a classroom setting, and they are way too expensive. This machine is the Featherweight of the 21st century, with tons of stitches and fun built in. Go for it!!!
Customer Review: What I wanted and more Summary: 5 Stars
I spent hours researching sewing machines online before ordering. I saw that this was one of the top machines on Consumer Reports and on Amazon.
I ordered it on a Friday night online from Amazon, and received it at my doorstep by 3pm on Monday with free shipping.
I am a very new to sewing.(I have had a 30 yr old hand-me-down Singer with just a couple basic stitch options tucked away in the closet that I have used on some curtains). I was wanting a machine to learn how to make some little quilts, do some hemming and alterations, and maybe sew some sun dresses for my daughters.
So far I really like:
A) Lightweight
B) Hard case to place over it to keep my children from messing with it
C) Display screen that informs me which presser foot is needed
D) Guides printed directly on the machine showing the proper threading of bobbin winding, bobbin threading, and upper thread threading
E) Little threading gadget that makes it so easy to thread the needle
F) Very nice manual that is easy to follow
G) Comes with a large quilting table
H) Very affordable- especially compared to similar models of other brands
Possible concerns:
A) The work light isn't very bright..but I am using it by a window
B) The presser foot lever and needle threader are plastic and do not seem very durable- maybe because the only other machine I have used was a metal tank. Not sure how they will hold up in the long run.
UPDATE: Had the machine for almost 3 months. I have made a few little blankets for my daughters, made the face for a twin size quilt (just haven't actually done the batting and back yet). So far, so good.
Customer Review: For the Money Summary: 4 Stars
I LOVE this machine. I HAVE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS!!! I have been sewing for a few years now on a VERY basic Kemore model (only 5 stiches), but just in the last year started quilting, and I mean all the time. I've finished 3 full size quilts and countless other items (nursing covers, burb cloths, kitchen towels, ect.) on this machine. For the money I never, NEVER, would have gotten some of the features I got with this machine with any other machine. While I do plan on one day upgrading, I needed something to broaden my horizon, while not costing me an arm and a leg. I went to my local quilt shop and I walked out of there dissappointed that there was nothing under $700 that the lady wanted to sell me. I looked around at Joann's and online, and thought for sure this was the machine I needed. I mean if it only lasts 2 years I felt like it was worth it. Now, several projects later, I won't get rid of this machine until it starts smoking and screaming.
The space under the foot is a little short, but with some manuvering you can get past this. The extra feet for quilting have been great. I really LOVE the needle threader, although with some thicker threads you won't be able to use this feature. It is super quiet, so I can sew during nap time. This machine also allows me to play with some other stich patterns I didn't have before. Saying all this I do beliece it is a great jumping off point for new quilter's, but for someone more interested in other sewing projects, clothes and such, I wouldn't buy this machine. The Free-Arm part is really wide and I couldn't get some stocking I was making for Christmas around it. Hope this helps!! Happy Quilting!!!
Customer Review: Not so great after 2.5 years Summary: 1 Stars
Well I am removing my 5 star review of 5 years ago...I just can't take it any more with this machine.
I am an advanced seamtress - I have been sewing for 45 years and have made many garments, draperies, etc. all for personal use. I have not ever had alot of money to spend on a sewing machine - I had nice Singers back in the 60's - 70's then a low end White (mechanical machine) which was good too. This is the cheapest machine I have ever owned and it was not worth it. I am a very mechanical person and I cannot tell you how many times I have taken apart the whole bobbin assembly on this stupid machine. The tension is crazy. This halloween I made two costumes (an adult sized Harry Potter robe reversable, and an adult Jedi knight tunic) - I chose woven fabrics - mid weight linens because I thought the machine could handle it best. While sewing something fell on the foot pedal and the machine started sewing off the fabric - the door of the bobbin case flew off and the bobbin case got twisted and misaligned...took 20 min to fix which I didn't have. I Managed to get through the second costume but the tension was so bad. I was making flat felled seams because linen can ravel and I wanted it to be pretty on both sides. NOT! Somone once said in a sewing machine review that nothing can mess up your blood pressure like tension problems. I agree. This machine made every project take 25% more time because of messing with tension and bobbin issues. That is not fun. I am sorry I have contributed to this machine being rated so high. All the features are totally cool but the quality is just not there...BTW this is my first negative review...
Customer Review: Very nice machine but not overly poweful Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, I really like this machine. It seemed to get a little slow on some extra thick material but worked fine on other things. It seems kind of lightweight so I was a bit hesitant of putting it at full speed to sew and I did break the twin needle just trying out the stitches that you use with that. The sewing light is quite dim. The decorative stitches don't look great but the basic stitches work and look good. You really need to use quality thread or it doesn't work as well. I really like how easy it is to thread and program in the stitch that you want to use. This is a great machine for a beginner and the manual is great at explaining what each stitch is used for. I like the larger attachment as well for having a greater surface area to sew on as well as being able to remove it and have the free arm for sleeves etc. I did not have any trouble with the bobbin or tension as others have mentioned. All in all it seems to be a nice machine, I did decide though to give this one to one of our daughters for Christmas instead of keeping it. I have other machines that will do what this does but I paid a few thousand more for it. For the money its a great machine. I love sewing machines and have 7 that I regularly use. Some are industrial for faster or heavier sewing but I like to have a little basic one for just sewing clothes. I was really excited to see all of the different stitches and features on this one. I really liked the different speed switch. I liked the several different feet as well as the walking foot, that was a real bonus since I paid even more for just for that on another machine that I had.
