Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother CS6000i Sew Advance Sew Affordable 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing MachineCustomer Review: So happy with this machine Summary: 5 Stars
I had a Brother and then went to a Viking. I broke my Viking after 4 years, but i never really loved it - the stitches were always a mess on the bottom and no one could tell me why. When i went to buy a new machine, the woman at Jo Ann was telling me how great the computerized Viking was, because of the fast/slow button, the ease of using it, the many stitches, and finally the table attachment (but that was additional $), She's getting an advanced degree in some kind of sewing/design and sews a lot. This machine was $579 and I was really considering it, even though I don't sew a whole lot anymore, but thinking maybe with this easy machine I would start. I've always been afraid of sewing on stretch fabrics, and she convinced me it was a breeze with the Viking. Well, I went on-line and found nothing but bad reviews on the Vikings! I found this Brother, which has all the same features and more, and had one great review after another. I ordered it and it was here 2 days later. The first time I used it, I was having trouble with the thread tension and thought I had loaded the bobbin correctly - which i had - but what I had done wrong based on the old type of machine was pulling the thread up with the needle - DONT DO THAT! I took a one-on-one session at our Brother repair center and learned the machine top to bottom (but it's all explained well in the book - I just like to learn visually and then re-reading makes more sense). It is the best machine I have ever had. My projects are mostly doll clothes, costumes and art projects. The stitches are neat, finally! IN fact, I had a half-finished doll pajama set that I finished immediately and you can tell what parts were sewn with the Viking and which were with the Brother, esp. on the top stitching. I look forward to sewing now. I love that you don't have to use the foot pedal and also love the fast/slow button - great for kids. You will not be unhappy with this purchase. Happy sewing!
Customer Review: It just arrived today Summary: 4 Stars
Editing review to add that Brother responded to my letter asking about the missing presser feet, and I've received the feet.
My last machine was a Brother refurb. It lasted five years, through about 40 quilts, so I was ready for another Brother.
I like this one. It's similar enough to my old one that threading and bobbin winding were easy to figure out. However, I'm not crazy about the LED display and stitch selection feature. I've already broken one needle -- after setting the needle position to accommodate the presser foot I wanted to use, the needle broke on the presser plate below. I'd like to be able to use the 1/4" foot that I used on the old machine, but I can't get the needle positioned correctly.
The motor is much quieter than my old machine, but there's a click with every stitch. Anyone know if that's to be expected? Or am I doing something wrong?
I love the light weight!
Edited after using the machine for a couple of weeks: I've had a couple of issues with thread tension staying where I want it. I'll get the right setting, sew for awhile, and whoopsadaisy, without making any adjustments, the tension needs adjusting.
I wrote to Brother almost 2 weeks ago asking about the clicking noise, and to let them know I didn't get two presser feet that were supposed to come with the machine. I sent the proof of purchase, and I even copied the page from the manual and circled the presser feet that were missing. No response yet.
I've had to add light in my sewing room -- the lights on the machine aren't bright enough when I'm working with dark fabric.
Other than that, I'm still pretty happy, but when I can afford it, I'm going to test sew on a Bernina or Husqvarna.
Also, the stitch that's supposed to mimic the look of hand quilting doesn't look like any hand quilting I've ever seen.
Customer Review: Just got it today. Summary: 4 Stars
I have a 6 year old manual Singer, and I'm a novice quilter. Being faced with spending big bucks on different accessories for the Singer, I saw this for such a good price, with everything I wanted.
I have only used it for one day, but this is my review so far:
I'm technologically challenged, but if you read the manual, you can get through the steps pretty easily.
pros:
Lightweight: this will be great for taking it to classes.
Smooth and quiet stitching: my singer was a bit loud and jerky, and I like this one better.
Quilting options: comes with the extension table, walking foot, quilting(darning) foot, and the ability to do a 1/4" seam. buying all these things for a machine you already have would again be more than this machine itself!
Lots of stitches: I've only had basic, so the myriad of stitch choices is fun.
cons:
dim lighting: it says it has super bright lighting...just not so. you will need another light source.
portability: yes, it is lightweight, but plastic cover is just a cover, not a carrying case. you have to remove your spool of thread to get it on. the compartment for holding all the other little pieces is a little pitiful, and difficult to get on with the pouch of stuff in it. if you want to lug this baby to classes you'll need something to carry your other accessories, the extension table, cords, etc.
Default stitch setting: if you turn off the machine, it always goes back to a default, which you cannot change, so you have to remember to reset everything where you had it.
Overall so far: I like it so far. I think you get an awful lot for the money with this one. It has a lot of features that you'd pay a lot more for with higher-end machines. It has a few annoying quirks, but nothing that would make me return it so far.
Customer Review: Not a bad machine, but probably won't buy another one Summary: 3 Stars
I'm an intermediate seamstress and have been sewing on this machine for almost a year now, on a number of different projects such as clothing, home dec and quilting.
There are a lot of pros to this machine, and quite a few things that make it a good beginner/early intermediate machine. First, it is extremely user-friendly. The feet are very easy to change, the buttonhole functions are great, the stitching variety and overall quality are good. It comes with just about everything you need: a quilting foot, zipper foot, buttonhole attachment, quilting expansion tray (which widens your flat workspace to about 8"x14"), extra bobbins and a maintenance kit, among other things. It's very lightweight and easy to transport. You change the stitch width, length and style at the touch of a button, and the screen readout shows you what the standard width/length setting is, as well as which foot the stitches uses.
However, when it dies I'll probably replace it with a different brand. The lightweight factor that makes it great for a "take along" machine also works against it - it just doesn't have quite the power I was hoping for. It will sew over thicker layers if you walk the foot across the seam manually (otherwise you'll probably wind up with a broken needle), and the quality of the straight stitch can be irregular (doesn't appear to be a fabric quality or tension issue). Also, this may be a quirk to the machine I received, but the screw to hold the foot on seems to have stripped, as I have to manually tighten it every few minutes. I bought this model instead of the next one down because of the additional decorative stitches, but have found that they only sew evenly if you're sewing over one layer of fabric.
This is not a bad machine for the Amazon price, and well worth it if you're doing light-moderate sewing.
Customer Review: Super Great Machine! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using my Brother CS6000i now for about 6 weeks and absolutly love it! I have an old basic Kenmore that I've had for many, many years but haven't done much sewing in many years either. Any time I needed something done it was easier to go to mom and let her do it! With a new granddaughter and great niece or nephew due soon, I was itching to get creative and get back into sewing. I wanted a machine that was economical but that would do about everything and this one has more than fulfilled my wishes. I read the reviews and did my research and kept coming back to this machine and I am very glad I did. The fact that it comes with all the attachments you could want was a big plus. It's very easy to use, the stitches are beautiful, it's light weight but doesn't jump around the table. My only peeve, and this is minor, is that it would be nice if the LED screen was lite up so that it was easier to read the stitch numbers. It's taken some time getting use to the fact that it does reset to the basic stitches when you turn it off. If I'm in the middle of the project and have to quit, I've learned to write down my settings so I can continue later. I love the fact that it tells you what presser foot to use with different stitches and the feet are so clearly marked with their identification letter and are so easy to change. The instruction book is well written and illustrated, which is a big plus to learning the machine features and using the different stitches. Everything about this machine is great. My mom is a professional seamstress and has profesionally sewn everything from baby things to bridal dresses and she was totally amazed at what this machine could do and how easy it was to operate. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone.
