Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother CS6000i Sew Advance Sew Affordable 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing MachineCustomer Review: Works great! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a beginner sewer and I have to say that I couldn't be more pleased with my Brother CS6000i. I read thru the instructions first thing, which were very easy to follow and had understandable pictures to go with each step. I plug it all in and away I went with sewing my first tote.
Some of the features I really like are...the cover over the bobbin is see thru, so you can see exactly how much you have left(my MIL's sewing machine doesn't have this, so its a perk for me, since her's was the first sewing machine i used).
Since I'm new to sewing I haven't quite gotten a good feel for how much pressure to put on the foot pedal when I start sewing....(i tend to like to go sloooow) So being able to set the speed for the machine to slow and not have it go any faster no matter how hard i step on the foot pedal is a BIG plus for me.
I also like that you don't have to step on the foot pedal to use reverse. You can just hold the button it and it'll go on its own.
The LED light is nice and bright, letting you see just what you're working on.
A few things that could use improvement.
It would be nice if the LCD screen was lite up....
The "storage compartment" is really just some empty space that just so happened to get labeled "storage compartment". It would be better and more functional if it slide out like a drawer.
The cover that comes with the machine functions just as it should....but(and maybe this is just me) it would be nice if there was a little space in the styrofoam(there is a layer of 'good' styrofoam glued into the top of the cover) for a spool of thread, so that the cover can be put on the sewing machine while there is a spool on the spool pin.
Also maybe it just needs some more use...but my needle threader kinda gets stuck sometimes....and No, I'm not using thick thread or the wrong needle...
So far I haven't used any of the fancy stitches...but I'll get around to it. One thing that did impress me was how well the machine did when i put (medium/heavy weight) fabric that was folded three times thru it(handles for my tote). It didn't have any problems going right over the thick fabric.
Overall I think this product is perfect for any beginner.
Customer Review: awesome machine Summary: 4 Stars
hi,
word of the day: awesome.
well i have used this machine a little bit since receiving and so far i love it. i've always loved to sew, but never really did a lot of it. i had a cheap crap machine and wanted to upgrade to something that is Awesome without paying a zillion dollars. also, i am a dork that breaks all electronics but this thing is just Too Easy to operate! can't see myself ruining it just yet.
how awesome is this thing??
->push button start is awesome.
->no tripping over foot pedal cords is awesome.
->simplicity of presser foot changing is awesome.
->so many stitch options is awesome.
->large work table is awesome.
->light weight for easy carrying is awesome.
->top load bobbin is SO awesome...i can tell if im running low before starting another line.
->price is awesome.
->digital is awesome.
->free dust cover is awesome.
whats not awesome?
->manual is not awesome...i wouldnt say hard to read necessarily, just not so great for beginners. and i hate how its not machine specific. "if your machine has this function, do this...if not, do this" i dont want to sit around and figure out if mine has it or not. just tell me how to use the dang thing.
->self-threading bobbin is hard to use and seems cheap. its a hassle to use.
->when threading the machine, that little hook you usually put the thread behind (the thing right over the needle..the step just before threading the needle), whatever it is called. its freaking hard to tuck the thread behind. once you do it a few times, its alright...just a hassle. i like my old one better.
->dont know if you can turn the volume off, but the beeping is kinda dumb.
i Would and Have already recommended this machine to friends. the value is Amazing and i feel great about this purchase and hope it lasts a long while. im not a professional by any means, but i think even if you are new to sewing this machine is worth paying a couple extra bucks for. it so beats my old cheap crap thing, and makes sewing more FUN and AWESOME.
Customer Review: First sewing machine I've owned and love it. Summary: 5 Stars
My 31 year old son bought this and is giving the review for this.
The automatic needle threader is a blessing.
The instructions on the machine for threading a bobbin are great for those that forget things easily. The light is good.
I almost didn't find the sewing tray extension except I had kept the box encase I needed to return it, and decided to use the box to help someone move out of their house with. Low and behold there it was in a extra cardboard box. It is really handy when used.
Hemming pant legs and everything else is easier to sew with the accessories box off. I wold recommend getting extra Levi's needles because they will break your normal needle if you aren't careful.
The only problems I've had is trying to hem Levies and going over seams, this will give you an error code even with a different needle. To fix this, I just skip over the seam and start sewing again. Also, really thin material will sometimes jam with the thread wrapping around and tangling up where the bobbin is, so you have to pull it a long gently.
Besides being patient on error codes, I love this machine.
When I ordered mine I bought it with the Brother 5300 Universal Sewing Machine Carrying Case because the original cover looked flimsy. It only covers the top and is awkward to move without a bottom piece and a hole in the side of the case to reach the handle already on the machine.
I took the packaging Styrofoam from the shipping box, cut off the extra pieces and padded the bottom of the Universal Carrying Case, and took the Styrofoam top protector from inside the original carrying case out (it's glued in there pretty good) and place that on top of my sewing machine before storage. The Styrofoam placed in the bottom of the case makes it so it dose not shift when moving and gives you two storage spaces on one side, and a large one on the other side of the machine for putting stuff like the plastic sewing kit with scissors sold at stores.
Customer Review: Some issues Summary: 2 Stars
I read the Amazon reviews very closely before making this purchase. I loved this machine when I first bought it b/c it had a happy purr when I sewed. It was so cute and compact. I was influenced by the glowing reviews and thought this would be a great little machine.
So, the problems started soon after the purchase. I assumed that I just wasn't very skilled at sewing zippers. The foot was wobbly and the stitches were terrible. But after three different people tried sewing on my machine stated that they all hate the zipper foot. All of the users were skilled sewers and one taught at Parsons. It's a technical problem -you can't get close enough to the zipper to make a good, straight stitch. Now, I sew perfect zippers all the time on other machines. I bought another zipper foot at Jo-Annes but it just doesn't work. Real sewers need to be able to sew zippers -it's really basic. Simple straight stitching was fine most of the time. The machine never liked frequent use and would have threading/bobbin problems if I sewed more than a couple of hours in a day.
I'm a design student and this is a problem. It's really a cheap consumer model and you get what you pay for. I felt like after reading the stellar reviews I couldn't pass up such a good deal. I would not buy the machine after using it (and relying on it) for while. I don't need an industrial machine for home use -but I certainly need one that will last and be dependable.
Last year I did a project making simple cat beds for the animal shelter. It's horrible to see cats sleep in their litter b/c the open wire cages are so uncomfortable. Well, my goal was to make 30-70 unlined, two layer bed/blankets in a medium cotton fabric. This is one of the simplest and fastest projects I can imagine doing. The machine couldn't handle consistent use and the needle kept getting caught in the bobbin. The needle even seemed to shift forward slightly which was odd. The repairs were almost the cost of the machine so now it sits in the closet. I'll donate it to a nonprofit if I find one that can get it repaired for free/cheap.
Customer Review: Brother CS6000I Sewing Machine Summary: 5 Stars
I am not a expert seamstress by any means, as I have only sewn the most simplest of children's dresses and shorts (and only with the help of my mother!), but I haven't bothered to learn to sew because of the sewing machine I already had. It gave me a lot of grief, and after spending entirely too long just trying to sew my kids a couple of "supergirl capes" I decided that if I was going to ever use a sewing machine again it had to be better than this old one of mine.
I picked the Brother CS6000I due to all the good reviews it got, and also the fact that it did not cost very much. It arrived 2 days after I ordered it and I have absolutely no complaints about it yet. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and have actually begun to sew my daughters some dresses (and more shorts) without my mom's help using this new machine. But when it first arrived I had to study it for awhile. I am the sort who has to read all the directions, instruction manuals and study something before I'm ready to try it. After doing so, I got some scrap cloth and started trying out the various stitches. I was very pleased! This machine ran like a top, did everything I asked it to and will easily sew through many layers of cloth. I tested it pretty good and afterwards had to call my mom to tell her how neat it was!
I like being able to take it with me, visually it is nice to look at, it tells me what presser foot to use on the stitches I select, and is pretty much dummy proof. It is so easy to load the bobbin and have the thread automatically come up. If you've used a dinosaur like my old one, that was a long and laborious task. Just the simple things on it save so much time and frustration. And something that I found to be incredibly neat was the fact that you can see the bobbin (through the clear plastic cover) and can know when it's getting low on thread. I hate sewing a seam and in the middle of it somewhere I run out of bobbin thread. That won't happen with this machine unless I just fail to look at the bobbin. I feel I made a very good purchase.
