Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 42632 Riviera 64-Ounce Water Pitcher and 1 FilterCustomer Review: Fits into the fridge Summary: 4 Stars
I have two Brita pitchers this one and older model that does not have filter indicator, is square shaped and has one piece lid as opposed to two. Both fit into the fridge nicely and filter tap water adequately to my taste. The only reason I like the old pitcher better is that the flap never gets stuck when you try to pour water out. With this pitcher it occasionally gets stuck and water spills all over the place. At first I though it was a matter of not cleaning the spout properly but it happens even after the pitcher has just been washed. The filter change indicator is nice little feature that reminds me to change the filters on both pitchers.
In case you are considering one of those in-fridge models I'd advice against it. I once had the unfortunate pleasure of cleaning one that had formed mold or bacteria or something inside and the corners and particularly the tap on the thing was very difficult to wash. Also as you are not supposed to pour hot water into it, I was rather skeptical if it was sanitary enough to use again. These pitchers I've washed successfully in the dishwasher even though I'm not sure if you are supposed to. I've put the reservoir and lids to the upper shelf and washed the pitchers themselves on the bottom with normal wash settings.
Customer Review: Great price/performance buy Summary: 5 Stars
We have owned our pitcher for about two months, and are very happy with it. The taste of the water is a marked difference from the tap water here in Chicago. Further, the pitcher is reliable and solidly made. Be aware that it is heavy - for the elderly or kids, a full pitcher would be a lot to handle but it works great in our kitchen. We use the water for cooking as well as just drinking water. I can fill up a large pan, refill the filter top and put it aside for a minute or two and have fresh water to fill another pan or for other cooking - simple, just not instantaneous.
Per consumer magazine suggestions, we intend to rely on the taste of the water to tell us when to change the filter. Hence, we don't really care what the filter 'status' indicator is saying.
We used to own an inline filtration system with which we were very happy. We find this water quality equivalent in taste, and adapts well to our apartment living where we cannot install a permanent system. As a result, this pitcher is a great compromise at a low cost.
Customer Review: I now love water! Summary: 4 Stars
I never used to drink water from the tap. Even though it's safe, it always left a bad taste in my mouth. But now with this Brita Pitcher I drink more water than ever. I cant believe how much I drink. I'll pour a glass and down the whole thing just because it's that good. And the filter lasts a while, Ive had the pitcher now for over a month (in a family of four + 1 dog) and it just recently went down one notch to 75% on the replacement indicator. I can see the filters lasting an easy 3-4 months. Another plus is how fast it filters the water, if you go to the fridge and find that one of the kids put the pitcher back empty, no worries, you refill the top and it will be done filtering in less than a few minutes. Amazing! The one and only drawback I noticed was that the first week of using it there a few tiny black specs at the bottom of the pitcher, which actually turned out to be something we should have rinsed out of the top of the pitcher initially anyway. After that it was perfect!
Customer Review: major design flaws Summary: 1 Stars
Sharp design, only problem is they put form over function when designing it. First problem, if the water hasn't drained completely from the upper (non filtered) basin, and you try and pour the pitcher, the unfiltered water pours out with the filtered water. Second problem, when you fill it up, if you let the water overflow the basin, the first thing it does is drain into the filtered basin. In the older round designs, the upper basin was water tight with the lid on, so you could pour out filtered water before the upper basin was empty. If you overflowed the upper basin the water would got over the side and not into the filtered basin. This allowed the user to set it under the sink and not have to stand there for 30 second to shut off the water. They took a definite step backwards with this design. It's really amazing that in the year 2005, such bad product design is still making to the store shelves.
Customer Review: difficult to use Summary: 2 Stars
Our old Brita pitcher warped when left too close to a hot burner, so we chose this newer model for its space-saving qualities and capacity. We have been so disappointed! Unlike other reviewers we find the thumb-tab reservoir opener easy to use. But ergonomically the pitcher is a disaster. When full, it takes two hands to pour water, one to life it and one to steady it. it is just so heavy, and the narrow design means it is unbalanced when pouring. The little lip on the spout does often stick, so when the pressure of the pouring water finally opens it, it is with a gush.
Despite this model's hefty pricetag, we will have to buy a different Brita. if narrow, we'll get one with a smaller capacity, but I'm leaning towards the old-fashioned round design. (Wish they'd make a handsome opaque pitcher to leave on the kitchen counter for cooking and making tea and coffee.)
