Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 42632 Riviera 64-Ounce Water Pitcher and 1 Filter

Customer Review: Brita water filtration makes your day better
Summary: 4 Stars

There's no doubt about it -- you need water because the human body is up to 70% water by weight. Most people love water, and the Brita pitcher makes good water better.

I bought my original, round Brita pitcher because I was on a quest for the best cup of coffee, and if you want GREAT coffee, water that's clean, cold and fresh is just plain essential. The Brita filters have been great from that day to this, and the pitcher delivers good tasting water that's more economical than bottled water. If you have a coffeemaker that is designed with a built-in water filter you could leave that point of use filter out of the maker and save your money if you use the Brita pitcher. I even take my pitcher along on camping trips.

Well now...this model is my third Brita and the things I still like most about it are the space saving flat sides which take up less space in the fridge than the original rounded model and the convenience of the flip top lid where you fill the pitcher. This has a capacity of two quarts which is only enough for a ten cup coffee maker.

The so-called "Smart" timer doesn't monitor the condition of the filter; rather it's a timer with a nonreplaceable battery that approximates the time between filter changes. The user manual says the battery will last about five years.

The contoured handle helps assure a good grip, and if you are in the habit of storing your pitcher in the fridge, it works best if you adjust the shelf on which you set the pitcher a little above waist high.

Emptying the pitcher before refilling is nothing to worry about as the filter will not dry out just because you pour out all the water. Just don't let the pitcher sit for awhile with the water level below the bottom of the filter when it's installed.

There are always fine carbon particles in the bottom of the pitcher. They come out of the filter with use. Personally, I don't like that feature, but I've never been fearful of those little things because the human body is also about 23% carbon. Best of a healthy life to you!

Customer Review: Just follow instructions
Summary: 5 Stars

I was initially apprehensive in purchasing the Brita 42632 Riviera chrome pitcher due to the various criticisms of it. I chose it due to the high rating by Consumer Reports as well as the many stars given by Amazon consumers. After our family of three has used it for several weeks now, I can say we are perfectly happy with it. The water tastes great (just don't use stale ice), the design is streamlined (my 1st choice was white, but chrome looks fine), the ergonomics are good no matter the amount of water inside, it's the right size for us (we go through about a pitcher a day), and there are no spills or leaks whatsoever.

I believe the key is simply to follow the instructions. It took me an hour to get the entire thing going after reading every word, but we have had no problem since. Under "Getting Started," note particularly the last step, where you need to discard the first two pitchers to remove any particulate matter. Just to be sure, I discarded a third (our flowers enjoyed this).

Also, note the tip to fill the pitcher by allowing tap water to run down the side of the reservoir rather than hit and disturb the filter directly. This should help ensure no charcoal bits.

Finally, observe the instruction to wait for the water in the reservoir to drain completely before pouring or filling again (it takes about 2 reservoir-fulls to actually fill the pitcher, and a few minutes wait each time). This way you will not be as likely to overfill, as there's nowhere for the extra water to go but out the little covered spout. It should also eliminate the charcoal flakes from coming out, too.

In conclusion, when all else fails, follow directions!

PS: Apparently the filters for all the different Brita models are the same; they are one standard interchangeable filter, but haven't researched the most economical place to purchase them yet.

Customer Review: Great tasting water
Summary: 5 Stars

I decided to give Brita Riviera Water Pitcher a try after reading the online reviews.
When I first bought the pitcher, I wasn't sure why the front cover kept falling off so I decided to return it back to the store but I picked up another one where the front and back part of the top cover fits well. After examining few of the same pitchers in store, I noticed many of them had a cover that didn't fit well for this particular model. I believe this is due to the curvy design of the top cover. Make sure you choose the one where the cover fits snugly. For the one that doesn't fit well, you will notice that there is a space between the cover and the clear plastic bottom part of the pitcher if you look at it from the side. Also from reading the review others have wrote, the timer indicator seems like it's just a monthly indicator and also useless when exposed to water. I decided to just wash the whole thing with soap and water anyways since I rather have a clean pitcher then a useless timer. To my surprise, the timer still works even after I washed the whole thing with soap and water. Lastly, I didn't expect much about the water taste since I'm already drinking filtered water and bought the pitcher so that I can keep it at my desk but I definitely noticed that the water tasted so much better then my regular filtered water. I'm drinking much more water because of this and I love it so much that I bought another one so that I can keep one at home and the other one in my office. This model was perfect size for me since it wasn't too big and it wasn't too small. In addition, I love the slick style too.

Customer Review: Terrible, Not Debatable
Summary: 1 Stars

If you read most of the good reviews they all glow about Brita in general, good tasting water, looks cool. None of this is actually helpful to rate THIS pitcher. Some items are not debatable:

(1) The digital filter meter is worthless. All it does is measure the time from when you bought the pitcher to approximate when to change the filter. Have a PDA? A calendar? Put in the date to change the filter and don't mess with this, changing this thing when the battery runs out, a total pain.

(2) The design makes it very easy for water on top in the unpurified area that should drain into the lower purified water to mix together. If that doesn't happen in the pitcher it will happen when pouring water. Unless that top piece stays in place and is water-tight all over, the water in the top chamber will mix with the water in the bottom chamber. It's called gravity and the top area isn't designed well to keep the seal at all.

(3) I've never had algae. I don't think it's the pitcher. That still doesn't mean this is any better than a cheap pitcher in the store or the one your discount drug store sells that uses the same type of cartridge.

(4) The top cover is not designed to stay on well. Some report theirs stays on. I don't believe them. Even if it does and they can hold the pitcher to prevent it from happening often, do you really need to waste your money on THIS pitcher. No need to gamble. Get another one.

Customer Review: Sure it's pretty. Can I drink "pretty"?
Summary: 1 Stars

Other reviewers have said the same but I will reiterate:

--Filter timer is a joke. It only counts time, not gallons filtered. I don't need this because we already own several calendars.

--Sectional lid must have been designed by the marketing department. They fit together awkwardly and fall off easily. If you try to pour a class of water with even a little still left in the upper chamber, the whole assembly falls apart as you are pouring.

--Lower compartment easily contaminated by unfiltered water.

--My unit grows ALGAE in it after about 10 days. You would think that I must leave it on a sunny window sill, but I don't. It lives on the kitchen counter and I live in the Pacific Northwest where it is cloudy 9 months out of the year. So, anyway, the unit has to go in the dishwasher once a week (hand washing doesn't cut it....algae grows right back). Previous Brita (we've had many) and PUR pitchers did not have this problem.

As a consumer I want to ask: What is so friggin hard about designing a decent water pitcher for cripes sake?!!!

Generally this pitcher demonstrates what is wrong with so many companies that make consumer products. They pay damn little attention to engineering a good product and put all their effort into giving it "purchase appeal" and marketing it.

Try something else.
