Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 42556 Grand 80-Ounce Water Filtration Pitcher, WhiteCustomer Review: Worst Britta pitcher EVER!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I've been using some model or other of Brita pitcher for the last 15 years or so. This is undoubtedly the biggest piece of junk they have EVER produced. Some highlights:
1. Whereas in previous models you could use the pitcher before the contents were completely filtered, and use the top portion as a reservoir while keeping the unfiltered portion cold in the fridge, if you attempt to use this model while there is water in the top portion, either the lid will pop off, making a gigantic mess, or it will leak through the "convenient" rocking sub-lid they for some reason decided to add to this design (as if it were so hard to take the lid off to fill it up).
2. When the filtered portion is completely full, pouring water out of the pitcher is slowed to a little trickle because it creates a vacuum inside. So slow indeed that you will be tempted to tilt the pitcher a bit more, resulting in the top (white) and bottom (clear) coming apart, spilling water everywhere.
3. This is more of a pet peeve. For some reason they added an electronic filter replacement indicator, which is really just a long timer. As if every household used the same amount of water. Apparently they want to make us believe that single people and homes with multiple children need to replace their filter just as often.
Overall stupid, stupid, stupid. Spend your money on something else.
Customer Review: feeling cheated Summary: 1 Stars
I replaced my old Brita pitcher (I broke it) with this bigger one. I hate it. I have to wait until every bit of water has trickled into the reservoir before it can be used, and that is not a quick process. In a family, trust me, everyone isn't going to reliably fill the pitcher each time they use it. You will be waiting and waiting just to make some coffee. The lid leaks like a sieve if you try to pour some before it is all in the bottom. Additionally, it is really a two handed operation just to pour from. The lid will fall off sometimes, even when it seems properly seated, and water will be everywhere. I know this can happen with any pitcher if the lid isn't on correctly, but it happens a lot with this one. So, one hand to pick it up, and one hand to hold the lid on is really required.
An electronic gage to advise you how your filter life is progressing that moves in 25% increments might make you think there is something actually being gaged, other than the simple passage of time, that is. But all this thing does is tell you that in two months you should change the filter. It doesn't matter if you were on vacation the whole two months or a football team playing in the August heat was using your pitcher, it will need changing in two months.
Customer Review: good filter and idea, but not designed as well as those past... Summary: 3 Stars
I owned the same model, grand, which I purchased about 2-3 year ago perhaps and recently I knocked it off the counter and it cracked on the bottom. I was upset as I loved the filter and assumed they did not make it anymore, to my delight Brita still made it so I bought it. I instantly noticed that the plastic is much thinner and cheaper - I am not even sure how to describe it - it squeaks and groans when it is full and you lift it - just not as sturdy feeling although the older model was a bit difficult to pour when full due to its weight so perhaps this is actually an improvement. The cover does not fit very well - and again it much lighter than the older model I owned. If you are not careful, the lid will fall off and water will come out. I just hold on to the top when I pour it now, but still not a very good design especially when the other one I had worked so well and was heavier. I tried to change the lid for my older model's and there is a very slight change in the shape and they are not compatible. Overall I love how much water it holds, but I am disappointed they went cheap on this. I still would recommend it though as it has a large capacity - I used the other one for as I said 2-3 years and loved it - saves money, saves our environment.
Customer Review: This Is My Second Brita Grand Pitcher . . . Summary: 5 Stars
I am having a pretty hard time with the bad reviews here.
This is our second Brita Grand Pitcher. The first one lasted about 15 years. I dropped it into our sink, thereby cracking it, resulting in purchasing the new one. I have found no major differences between the new pitcher and the old pitcher.
1. I have NEVER had a problem with the filter falling out. People, PUSH IT IN!!! It won't fall out once you push it in firmly, believe me.
2. The lid doesn't fall off. Unless you have some kind of defective pitcher, the lid does not fall off. Like I said, I've had this pitcher (or one like it) for 15 years, and this has never been a problem for me.
3. Yes, you do have to wait for the water to filter through to efficiently pour water out. Big deal. That takes a whopping 1 to 2 minutes. Let's have some planning, people!
The point is, this pitcher holds a lot of water (about 3 quarts) and it makes your water taste good. It costs around $30 and (unless you drop it, like me) will last at least 15 years. That, to me, is a good buy.
PS I have no financial connection to Brita. I simply have been using it for a long time and am a satisfied customer.
Customer Review: Spills Galore Summary: 2 Stars
I agree with the reviewers citing a sticking spout cover and too-loose lid which floods the counter or floor if you haven't gotten in the habit of pouring over the sink yet. Others said the lid comes off if the tap water hasn't completely filtered through to the clear holding portion of the pitcher. I can top that by a little; the lid comes off frequently when pouring even when the upper reservoir is long emptied. Why? The filter cartridge will not stay locked down and comes tumbling out, knocking the lid off. Also, when you open the lid to fill the reservoir, the lid falls out or in, every time without fail. Consequently you have to hold the fill lid while filling and pouring. It is also required that you manually check that the pour spout is not sticking, or the the filter will pop out, the top will pop off, and you won't have to wonder when you'll find the time to mop the floor or wipe the counters. This is my third water filter pitcher, my first Brita (I've had it since last summer, but hate the idea that I wasted my money).
------Regarding the reviewers who often blame the user: maybe you got a good one. But I really dislike being told I'm doing it correctly...it's a water pitcher and I'm not 10 years old.
