Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 42378 Deluxe Water PitcherCustomer Review: Good water, if you can accept some design flaws Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this pitcher locally about two months ago. Right away in trying to use it, I had some frustrating issues. I was actually going to return the pitcher, but ended up keeping it in the end, using it just to refill our gallon jugs. The design flaws as I see them are:
1) Lid does NOT stay on when pouring from this pitcher! It pretty much just sits lightly on the top - no actual sealing. It is more useful for keeping dust out than for being an actual lid. After having it fly off on several occasions (causing me to spill water everywhere), I got into the habit of holding it on with the thumbs of both hands while pouring.
2) Pour spout pours the water Far and Wide. In other words, until you get used to it you may overshoot your glass. It is difficult to pour into our gallon jugs. Even if you learn to anticipate the water angle coming out at a big forward angle, it's still such a wide stream it will go over the sides of the jug's hole unless you pour very slowly. No problem if pouring into a big cup.
3) Top edge of pitcher and fill tank are ANGLED and slant toward the handle. This was another learning curve for me after many spills because I was manually holding the pitcher under the tap until full (tilting it to be even without realizing the issue) and then when I'd go to set it down on the counter a bunch of water would spill out because of the angle.
4) The filter kept flying out of the filter compartment when trying to pour. Being new to Brita, I didn't know how tightly you have to push/snap it in there. I only mention this one in case anyone hasn't used Brita before in the hopes of saving you the mess and frustration. Make sure it's turned the right way so the notch matches and push it down hard/firm.
5) The digital filter replacement gadget is just a gimmick. Basically a timer, not something that will count how many gallons you have actually filled.
All that being said, the pitcher is attractive and a decent size/shape. I like the durable rubberized handle, and although it takes about 2 1/2 passes and a fair amount of time to get enough filtered water to fill a gallon jug, my family has pretty much decided it beats our old pattern of filling 24 gallons at once with a trip to the "water store" (plus storing all those jugs). With the Brita, we sent all but 4 of those to the recycling bin.
