Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 42364 SpaceSaver Pitcher

Customer Review: Great water, flawed pitcher
Summary: 2 Stars

I have to agree with most of the other reviews. The water is clear & tastes right but the pitcher is a disaster. Once we had a bad filter that left the charcoal residue, but if we soak the filter in cold water for 10 mins then run cold water through it for a few seconds before installing it, the water is excellent. However...the pitcher could not be more flawed. The lid, despite all attempts refuses to stay seated on the pitcher. When pouring, the lid usually falls off or pops loose causing massive leakage & annoyance. The most ridiculous design feature though is at the top of the handle, inside the water reservoir...there's a hole where the handle attaches to the pitcher. SO, if the pitcher is A) over-filled or B) Not over-filled, but slightly jostled (such as the movement induced by returning the recently filled pitcher to the refrigerator) the water will go through the hole, down the handle and leak everywhere. There's a funky plastic piece inside the handle which keeps it from leaking all at once. That way you don't necessarily notice the handle is full of water immediately and your refrigerator is full of spilled water the next time you open it. My husband is not very conscious of this fact so I keep an empty cereal bowl in the refrigerator on the shelf below the water pitcher to catch all of the water that leaks down the handle.

Customer Review: Product Okay; Betters Specs Needed
Summary: 3 Stars

This pitcher is well-designed, and tucks into the fridge nicely. The water taste is somewhat improved. I find the top is too easily dislodged, but this is a minor annoyance.

The worst feature of this product is that the specifications for what impurities, exactly, the filter removes, seem to be unavailable. Vague promises in the accompanying product literature casually group various contaminants together with the promise that the filter removes ninety-something per cent of these. It seems unlikely to me that it does equally well for all the contaminants listed; in my opinion, this type of average statistic is largely useless. I'd like to know, for example, what percentage of chlorine should be removed. My filter does not seem to remove chlorine particularly well.

One might think that this type of information would be available on the manufacturer's web page. I tried to find specs there. There are pages and pages of graphics-rich irrelevant material that one must wade through. Then, finally, when one gets to the description of the product, there are no specifications on that page, and no link to a specs page.
Eventually, almost by accident, I discovered the FAQs page, hidden behind the customer support page. As best I could determine, it offered only the same vague promises listed above.

Customer Review: Space Space, Save Money w/ the SpaceSaver
Summary: 4 Stars

The Brita SpaceSaver did exactly what I wanted and expected it to do. Provided me with crystal clear and great tasting water but also saving space in my fridge. I will personally vouch that the taste is great.

One minor setback of this pitcher is the lid did not fit snug/flush to the pitcher itself. I haven't noticed any leaking/spills from it, and had already knew about the small imperfection. I didn't want to go through the hastle of getting a replacement top because it's not a problem at all. Note to new Brita users: Do not pour water when water is remained unfiltered in the above resorvoir or YOU WILL SPILL EVERYWHERE!

I rated the product overall a 4/5 because it was cost efficient, saved space in my small apartment fridge, and only had the lid setback. I have referred this exact pitcher to all of my friends in the same living situation as me, and those that are just trying to save a dime.

SAVE MONEY?
Cost of Brita SpaceSaver w/ 3 Filters = $48
Should last a total of 8 months (comes w/ one filter) 1 filter - 2 months

Cost of delivered bottled water = $30 per month (2x 5gallon, 1x case of water bottles) TOTAL: $240 for 8 months.

Brita - Bottled Water = Saved: $192!!!

Customer Review: This is a great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this in March-April of this year while I was in Los Angeles to save me from lugging water bottles upstairs and back down to take them to the recycling center. When I got back on the road, it was easy to use in motel rooms. I used it to fill my water bottle to drink from during the day while it was packed back into its box in the trunk of my car. Over time, I learned that it leaks when I pour ONLY because I filled it past the stated 48 oz. capacity. Many of the other complaints I've read about here, from charcoal residue to use of hot water, would have been resolved, IMO, if they had only read and followed the instructions in the User's Guide that also contains a Performance Data Sheet specifying the contaminents, reduction percentages, and other info. I have a Pur faucet filter for my kitchen sink with the 3-stage filter that adds minerals back for better taste, but this Brita pitcher produces much better tasting water and fits neatly on my refrigerator door shelf now that I'm back home. I'm greatly satisfied with this pitcher and recommend it highly both for home use and for road trips.

Customer Review: terrible product
Summary: 1 Stars

Got this for Christmas '10 and just as other reviewers have stated, the lid doesn't stay on at all. The first time I tried to pour I thought it was "user error" so tried again. And then again - this time over the sink. And every single time the lid fell right off at any attempt to pour - and I was filling it less than half full! I can't even imagine the mess a full pitcher made for the poor souls that made the seemingly logical assumption that a pitcher, any pitcher, would have a secure fitting top.

Just as bad, along with the top falling off, the whole filtration insert begins to slide out too, so if by some chance you started pouring and thought "oh, caught it!", just wait one more second and the whole insert will fall out and you'll have your giant mess again.

I honestly thought I must have a defective one and so I came on here to check reviews and see if others had the same 'defect'. Now that I know it's just plain old shoddy design, I will be returning it and NOT getting another.
