We always kept two boxes of these on hand as replacements when we used our Brita filter pitcher (we went to an in-line because we drink so much filtered water --we'd go through 40 gallons in no time, but that is a LOT of water.) There are three "gotcha's" on these filters to be aware of:1. Do not let the filter dry out. When the pitcher is empty, you should refill the reservoir right away. When the pitcher is full or partly full, the bottom of the filter is in the water and keeping moist.
2. The filter needs to be soaked and flushed exactly according to directions. Some of the charcoal packing comes off in the flushing process, and if you don't take care of it, you will have specks in the water. This is no big problem, just something to be aware of.
3. Never put overly warm or hot water through the filter.
If you follow the directions, you will have, as we did, gallons of water that cost a lot less and taste as good or better than the water you buy in plastic containers in the supermarket.

I used Brita filters for a couple of years before I noticed black carbon deposits floating around in my freshly poured cup of water. They are very hard to see.I purchased my first Brita filter system for home use. I didn't notice it for a long time because I always pour into a glass. I eventually bought a second system to use at work. At work, I use a paper cup. That's when I noticed the small carbon particles. It is easier to see the particles floating around in a white cup, as opposed to glass. I tried rinsing several different filters per the Brita instructions, but it didn't help.
I have switched to using Pur filters. No black carbon deposits with the Pur system.
I give the Brita filters 3 stars because they do remove the chlorine smell from city water (which is why I use water filters), and they filter the water reasonably quickly. If Brita can correct this problem, I will switch back to the Brita system.

Think about it. If you're using a filter for 106 times, you're getting your money's worth. Or you can just use it until your tastebuds decide the water is gross again. Remember, it's a water filter, not a purifier. It says so on the package. All it's supposed to do is remove the things that aren't tasting good, and copper too.
There are other brands that you can use first to filter the water that take care of all the other things, like asbestos and stuff. I use one of those, and then to take care of lead, I end with the Brita pitcher. The one that takes care of many more things than Brita does is called ClearH20, and the only thing that it doesn't do is copper. Brita does.
Using both of them makes the water taste terrific. I'd never use Brita or the ClearH20 alone....both of them together create awesome flavor....but either one by itself, the water tastes poor.

I apologize to anyone who may have read my review concerning the water filtering system for not having mentioned the need to replace the filters periodically. This is quite important both for the taste of the water and for the longevity of the systems itself. some of the other reviewer shave rightly pointed out menthods for trying to ensutre as long a life for each filter as possible, and I add only thre fact that one must be diligent in ensuring that one does have a supply of replacements filters ready as thye do take some time to order and replace, so you suyre do no want to wait until you need them to discover the box is empty! The Brita water filters ensure that the water will be available for your use and convenience. This is a healthy way to go , for the filters ensure you continue use water that is free of metal, sediment, and chlorine contamination. Enjoy!Customer Review: 17 Cents Per Gallon

I have been using Brita filters for over six years now and I have nothing but the best to say about them. Living in a part of the country where the tap water contains impurities resulting in poor taste, at first I resorted to bottled water. Besides being hard on the old wallet, I found that some brands had a burnt aftertaste to them. So I tried Brita. I was amazed at how it improved the taste of ordinary tap water. It tasted better than some bottled water I had been purchasing and it was crystal clear. I have been using Brita ever since. The only drawback initially is the cost of the pitcher, but once you have it the only other cost are the filters that are readily available at most stores. Each filter lasts about 40 gallons, which translates into getting bottled water quality for seventeen cents per gallon.
