Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Breville Ikon Panini PressCustomer Review: Great Press with Excellent results! Some vigilance required. Summary: 4 StarsGreat Press with Excellent results! Some vigilance required.
The Breville Ikon Panini Press is a great press and one of the best values for the price. I would have given this Panini Press 5 stars, but for a few features that it lacks.
Pros:
======
- Has plenty of power for fast heat up and excellent results
- Quick and even heating
- Large surface enough for large sandwiches of several small ones at the same time
- Has expandable hinged top plate that can accommodate thick sandwiches
- Adjustable heat settings for various foods
- Adjustable legs allow for flat level surface or tilt forward to drain
- Removable drip tray simplifies cleanup.
- The nonstick cast-aluminum plates allow the use of metal utensils.
- Overall design is heavy duty and has sleek pro look (some of the smaller models available from other manufacturers are flimsy, but this one is definitely more solid).
- Nonstick plates are fairly easy to clean.
- Can be stored laying down or standing up for saving space.
- My favorite feature: the adjustable height setting that allows me to set the top plate at a specific height so as to not crush any soft sandwiches
Cons:
=======
- No power switch - must unplug when done
- No timer, so you have to watch it. If you leave it unattended, your Panini may get burnt. I would have loved to have a setting similar to a toaster which shuts off after a period of time.
- Plates are not removable: It would have been a little easier to clean with removable plates, but then again; the non-removable plates make this unit so sturdy and the heating so uniform. If the plate had been removable, it might have come at a cost of not being as solid and heavy duty.
- Hot to touch: you must be careful, especially with small children around. This unit gets very hot to the touch and can easily burn. Breville could have done a better job insulating the top and sides of the unit so as to protect anyone touching the outside from burning.
Overall, I love this unit, but would only recommend it to someone who does not mind the cons described above.
