Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Breville EW30XL Electric Gourmet Wok

Customer Review: Best of the Worst
Summary: 3 Stars

This wok is only slightly better than other electric woks. I used it for the first time last night to make stir-fry Blue crabs and already there are two long deep scratches. The instruction manual also suggests preheating at the sear setting for ten minutes for best results. TEN MINUTES! Most stir-fry dishes are done in five minutes.

The wok is heavy, suggesting perhaps solid build, but can be tricky to wash. To its credit however, the wok is dishwasher safe. To remove the wok from the base, you have to turn a knob at the bottom of the base. This means tilting or turning the wok upside down to gain access to the knob. This may be a nuisance if you just want to quickly rinse the wok off in between dishes.

This wok may be fine for the occasional "fake" stir-fry cook. But for true wok cooking, stick with a carbon steel wok over a 65,000 plus BTU flame. Otherwise, as America's Test Kitchen recommends, stick with a flat saute pan. You have more heating surface and the temperature of the heating surface does not dissipate as quickly after adding ingredients.

Customer Review: Heavy Electric WOC
Summary: 4 Stars

When I bought my Breville Wok my old stove was down to one working burner. It definitely gave me more flexibility in cooking and it does a good job but the only heat setting I ever use is the HIGH-SEAR. The only thing I don't like about an electric wok may be a selling point to some people- it is VERY HEAVY. I was used to my old wok which was for the stove and was light weight. I decided to buy a new stove and a new light weight wok. When I am cooking a smaller amount of food I like to use my light weight wok where I can use a wrist motion to flip the food up in the air and have it land down back in the wok. You can't do that with the Breville because it is so heavy.

I still use the Breville particularly when I am cooking a larger amount of food, and have even used it as a make shift deep fryer and it seems well made so it should last a while. I dump hot water in it after I use it to help keep stains from building up on the non stick finish. That and using non metal utensils for stirring the food should help the non stick finish last a long time.

Customer Review: excellent product
Summary: 5 Stars

We love this electric wok! I have induction cookers and tried a carbon steel flat botton wok from the wok shop in San Fransisco but the bottom just was not flat enough to maintain the necessary contact with my induction cooker and after repeated unsuccessful attempts decided to go another route. I know wok purists would never recommend an electric wok but I decided to take a chance. We already have a Breville Smart Oven and have been so impressed with its quality, function and appearance that I decided to order their electric wok. I am very pleased with the outcome. It makes great stirfry, easy to use and clean up. Removing the base is simple and since the wok elements are completely sealed washing in the sink is easy. The heating control is user friendly and accurate. I have cooked sauces, soups and other dishes with great success in this wok. It's also beautiful on my soapstone counter top! The quality and design of the wok (and the sturdy glass lid) are superior. Breville has a reputation for high quality and this is another excellent product in my opinion.

Customer Review: Two Years, Still Love It
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this two years ago and still love it. I won't repeat all the other accolades, but just add that it has held up very well. It has a few tiny scratches in the bottom, but nothing to speak of and I anticipate having years more use. I use it anywhere from once every couple of weeks to a couple times a week. I always use high heat to sear the meat and use plastic spatulas.

I clean it with a scrubbing sponge, though wiping with a paper towel really works fine. I've been very impressed with the non-stick coating both as it's extremely easy to clean and that it's held up so well. I liked this wok so much I bought a Breville juicer (Breville Juice Extractor), which I also love. I'm just now considering their toaster oven (1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven) based on the performance of these two products. (No, I'm not affiliated with Breville in any way.)

Customer Review: Less than a week and I'm very satisfied!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I am giving this wok only 4 stars because I think it scratches too easy and I do use a plastic spatula. (You will recieve one in the box). Other than that, I would give it 5 stars or more.

I have made some really awesome chicken fried rice. The performance of the wok was just perfect. I made steak fajitas and decided to use the wok for that and it worked great. Did an awesome job of searing the meat and then sauteing the onions and peppers. I also used the wok to heat the tortillas. I can already tell that this will be a highly used appliance in my kitchen.

The Wok is made very well and easily comes off the stand for easy cleaning. The power cord is extremely well constructed. Very thick and sturdy.

Without going into long boring detail, I think you should consider buying the wok if you are searching, this one would be my recommendation. I got it on a lightening deal at only forty nine dollars, so that may have something to do with my satisfaction of the product.
