I have used gold filters in the past. They have been included when I've made a coffee maker purchase. On the whole they perform very well and take the place of purchasing paper filters. I just feel that the price is a bit steep for this type of item. You'd need to buy many hundreds of paper filters to make it a cost effective substitute.
I actually have one at home that I was hoping to use. Unfortunately these filters do not come in a standard size, so I had to purchase one. It added almost $18.00 to the cost of my coffee maker.
On the plus side, it does save a lot of paper, and dealing with Amazon is always a pleasure.

This filter works very well if you like strong coffee. A thin film of oil from the beans will end up in your coffee, and it lets through more richness than a paper filter. It also lasts a long time, and you won't have to purchase paper filters, which probably helps the environment over the long-run. Ours seem to last quite a while (a year or more?) and you can also put it in the dishwasher, which is a good idea to remove some of the residue. (Oily residue build-up in both the filter and coffee maker will cause your coffee to be bitter.) All in all, we are very happy with these filters and will continue purchasing them again and again.Customer Review: Good Value - Good Product

Have owned our Baun coffee-maker since 2006. It makes great drip coffee whether you like it light or strong, and the filter is the reason why. We won't ever go back to paper filters; the gold filter is the way to go. Our only complaint is that if you like REALLY strong coffee AND want a lot of it (i.e., more than 8 cups...according to the water gauge), you are out-of-luck because the coffee grounds flow over the top of filter. Grounds in coffee - not so good.
Finally, the Brita water filter that is a part of this coffee-maker (sold separately of course) works well too.

you still have to wash the coffee grounds out. I dump them in the garbage, of course, but then the filter takes quite a lot of rinsing, and coffee grounds get all over the sink, and you have to rinse that out. Takes a lot of water. So I still use a paper filer inside this, then the filter just takes a quick rinse. But at least if some of the grounds are outside the paper filer, they don't go in the coffee like they would with a conventional filter. This filter works as advertised - it replaces the #4 paper filters we were using.
Slightly difficult to clean - the bottom plastic part "u" seems to catch and hold those old coffee grounds, so you have to us a little bit of water to rinse it out completely. The strangely placed indentations on the lid also make it so that the brewing pot does not close completely over the filter - but it still works.
