Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Braun M880 Multimix 4-in-1 Hand MixerCustomer Review: I am in love with this mixer! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this mixer several weeks ago, so while I can't comment on its long-term durability (*see below), I will say that I have found it to be extremely useful in the kitchen.
Naturally, it performs mixing, blending, and whisking functions extremely well. I have used it for thick doughs and it handles these tasks smoothly and with no spilling/splashing. The most unexpected thing about the mixer, however, was the wonderful functionality of the chopper. I have used it to cut onions (something I hate doing by hand) and it cuts them into a small, even sized mince. This is more than I can say for some other choppers, like my Magic Bullet, which pulverizes some parts and leaves others whole. And the small size is perfect because there is no need to wash a large food processor bowl when you're finished. I think the chopper is worth the $40 alone.
It's also worth mentioning that this product won a second-place "highly recommended" rating from Chef's Illustrated.
*Addendum: I've now been using this mixer for about 8 months, and it has taken its rightful place as The Most Useful Appliance In My Kitchen. I still love it, use it all the time, and am most grateful to it for improving my life in many ways. This mixer gets my highest recommendation!
Customer Review: Terrific mixer and then some! Summary: 5 Stars
This mixer is the perfect size, weight and has plenty of horsepower. It comes with several great accessories which are surprisingly simple to connect and disconnect. Best of all, they're all extremely easy to clean and therefore I don't hesitate to use them often. The motor is vertically mounted which makes it near weightless when engaged in action. The handle and buttons are straight forward and convenient, plus the cord swivel is a nice bonus. I've had this mixer for over a year, and recently bought one for my sister. I have used each attachment many times; the mixer has enough power to make dough hooks effective when making bread. Be realistic in your expectation, however, it is not a heavy-duty tabletop mixer or needing machine, so it would not be appropriate for production style bread baking. Regarding its impressive power, I found it interesting that most other manufacturers choose not to publish the wattage rating of their mixers, which would allow for at least a cursory comparison of an important performance indicator.
From my research, you will be hard pressed to find a better quality mixer that has both the versatility and power that the M880 has anywhere near its price range. Most importantly, if you buy an M880, you will not be disappointed.
Customer Review: A good buy Summary: 5 Stars
If you don't have the space or the money to invest in three products--a mixer, blender, and mini-food processor--this is a great deal. (It also has dough hooks.) I just bought my second one. The first wore out (motor began to die) after about 8 years of nearly constant use. Some of the plastic parts are delicate--I dropped the chopper adapter soon after I got it and it chipped--but still worked. After about 7 years--the blender shaft broke. (There is a model called the M880M that has a steel blender shaft--but it's really hard to find.) I was able to find a replacement part rather easily (on-line) for about 8 dollars. Someone who cooks a lot might want a larger food processor that could support different blades and slicing disks--but this works well on many items--nuts, tomatoes, onions, etc. The chopper also has a lid for storage--which is a nice plus. The hand blender is nice for small jobs too--a smoothie, or to blend some soup. Again--if you really use the blender a lot or for large volume items--you'll probably prefer a stand-alone product. The mixer is fine for all needs. It beats egg whites, butter, and anything else I've tried quite well. The whole thing cleans very easily as well and is quite easy to use and store. A good buy.
Customer Review: Just OK Summary: 3 Stars
I've had this product 5 years.
CONS:
1. chopper shakes like crazy unless grinding very soft vegetables like tomatoes or potatoes.
2. "blender" attachment doesn't work--its shape blocks the motor from engaging, at least on mine.
3. food processor container is very small. can only blend less than 1 serving at a time.
4. already had to replace the clear food processor container--the middle spindle came off and only one retailer sells the replacement, NOT Braun OR Amazon.
PROS:
less expensive than a real food processor
ok for light cooking
takes less space than a real food processor and easier to clean
I mostly use the chopper, but only for SMALL batches of say, salsa or something. If you're making anything more than a snack, you'll need to do 3 or more batches. And if it contains any meat, nuts, or anything tough, forget it, use a blender or a real food processor. The beaters are good enough for low speed blending such as cakes and so on. I never use the kneading hooks and the blender has never worked. If I had to buy it again, I'd pay $40 for it, not more.
Customer Review: The best piece of kitchen equipment I've ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
I had a Braun Multi mix for about ten years (possibly more) and absolutely loved it. When it finally died on me I was amazed that I could not find it for sale in any of the stores in my area (Midwest). Anyway, Amazon to the rescue.
There is no piece of kitchen equipment I use more than the multi-mix.
I use it to make chunky soups creamier -- pureeing right in the pot I'm cooking in. I use it to finely chop ground beef for certain meals, fine dice tomatoes for sauce (because the kids don't like the big chunks), and also pureeing many vegies to put into meals to hide them from the kids. I make smoothies for my children using partially frozen strawberries mixed with fruit flavored yogurt.
I do most all of my chopping using the processing attachment.
Everything rinses off very easily so that if I'm chopping many separate things, I can just give it a hot rinse to move on to the next ingredient. I can't say enough good things about it.
And of course, as a hand mixer, well, it mixes.
I have never used the bread hooks (my old version didn't have this) so I can't comment on them.
