Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Braun M880 Multimix 4-in-1 Hand MixerCustomer Review: Best food processor for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I teach cooking classes at a local community college which has its own large food processor. But I found that by the time we got the food processor set up, chopped what we needed and then washed for the next student to use, a lot of time was wasted. So I started bringing my own Braun Multi-Mix to class. They were so imporessed that now the school owns some and we hardly ever use the large food processor anymore. I love what this powerful little motor can do. I love cooking with nuts and chopping them is a breeze. I can even make nut flour because it chops the nuts so finely. I can enjoy making bread because of the dough hooks, I love the blender for pureeing soups - the motor is strong enough to plow through any thick dough you could mix up. But I would have to say my favorite thing about this processor is the chopper. If I chop meat into small pieces I can even have ground pork or chicken. I do a lot of Thai cooking and I am always chopping vegetables. If it wasn't for this gadget to chop my nuts and my fine Wusthof knives - I don't think I would enjoy cooking so much! This processor makes cooking fun. The other great thing about this is that cleanup is a breeze (unlike that of a large food processor) and it stores so easily. Some people have mentioned that they have a hard time finding it at a land based store. I bought mine (I own two) at Linens 'N Things or at look at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I believe I bought mine there for around $40 but that was many years ago and worth every cent. Look for it by the blenders and small applicances.
Customer Review: You get what you pay for. Summary: 3 Stars
I'm new to baking. The Braun M880 Multimix 4-n-1 hand mixer is my first electric mixer. While I was trying to comprise a list of the items that I needed for my kitchen in order to bake, I thought that I should purchase an expensive table top mixer. However upon speaking with a colleague at work, that person being an excellent baker in her own right, she explained that while she has a table top mixer, she almost never uses it, finding her hand mixer more than adequate. After researching mixers online I decided that I should purchase the Braun as it was powerful, offered many accessories and was inexpensive compared to the others.
For the first month or so, I used the mixer only to prepare meals. Instead of using my food processor the Braun was great for small meals. Fast clean up. Later it was used for mixing various cake recipes. I prepared a couple of chocolate bundt cakes, cheese cakes, brownies as well as chocolate truffles. Although its motor labored, I obtained excellent results with it. However while mixing dough for croissants that the mixer's 1st and 2nd speeds stopped working. Only the 3rd, highest speed worked. Even after allowing the mixer to rest over night, the mixer never regained the use of those two speeds.
The mixer has been sent in for repair. In a telephone conversation, the repair person I spoke with told me that the switch failure is common to that model. Because of that experience, when it is returned, I'll only use it to prepare meals. l ended up ordering an expensive table top mixer after all.
Customer Review: Great Mixer Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this unit with dough hook and dicing attachments as a kit about 4 weeks ago, and have been very happy with the choice. The motor itself has enough power to get through the mixing tasks I've needed to do (cakes, breads, etc.). Weight-wise, it's not too heavy or too light, and for me, has a good ergonomic feel.
The beaters are the wire type, which gives doughs and batters less places to stick, making for an easier clean-up. The shape of the unit also allows a person to set the mixer on the counter with a wide enough base to be fairly stable. The beaters seem to do a great job mixing batters.
The only thing that I've found worthy to mention that's a little on the down-side is where the beaters plug into the bottom of the unit is some type of plastic or nylon material. A person needs to be careful to not force the beaters or dough hooks in the slots, otherwise, it may be possible to bend or break some of the plastic/nylon pieces. The plastic/nylon parts themselves do not have a cheap or easily-broken feel to them, but I've stopped short of trying to prove how tough or strong they are. The dicing attachment is a bit small, but great for quick and small projects. Warning: the blades are EXTREMELY sharp. Be careful when pulling them out! If there were a rating of 4.75, that's about where I would really rank this product.
Otherwise, for the money, (and for the careful person), this kit has way-cool features and function, and should be added to the essential kitchen tool set.
Customer Review: versatile and powerful Summary: 5 Stars
this is the best purchase i have ever made in my entire life! i love cooking, and i couldn't make so many of my favorite dishes without my mixer.
pros -
-this little mixer does it all! i haven't used the dough hooks yet, but the beaters are great for beating egg whites or mixing batters (i use them every weekend to make homemade pancakes for my boyfriend), the chopper made quick work of some veggies for a homemade salsa, and the blender makes perfect consistency smoothies and soups.
-the mixer is powerful but not overwhelming. with three speeds, the controls have just enough options and are easy to use.
-everything attaches and detaches smoothly, so mixing, cleaning up, and storing all the parts is easy.
-for the four different attachments, the price is very reasonable. and if you bought all the individual appliances, where would you store them all anyway?
-i don't think anyone else has mentioned this, but in addition to the instruction booklet, it also comes with a recipe booklet. there aren't a lot of recipes, but it's great for generating some ideas (especially about how to use those mysterious dough hooks).
cons -
-the only complaint i can imagine is that the chopper attachment can only process small quantities of food at a time. while it might not be as ideal as a full-size food processor, it didn't take me much longer to chop in a few batches and mix them together after, and my salsa tasted just as good. And the compact size can't be beat!
Customer Review: This mixer is so reliable..its's worth buying used Summary: 5 Stars
This mixer outperforms the higher priced mixers (kitchenaid, cuisinart). The motor is VERY quiet and powerful. The mixer's attachments makes it very versatile. I have yet to purchase a full size food processor, since this chops and minces quite well. As the owner of a small cheesecake business, I have yet to encounter ANY problems since i've been using it almost daily since December 2001. This is my second one because first one I owned was given to a family member who needed a good reliable hand mixer.
UPDATE (12/09/2010): The site where the cord attaches to the unit started to deteriorate. As a result, the first 2 speeds don't work, and starts only in the 3rd speed (it creates lots of splashing when blending). It might be due to the way I wrapped the cord around the base of the hand mixer after 9 years which might have created the short in the cord. I recently found a used Braun Multimix unit without all the attachments (that is EXACTLY what i need!) to replace the one that recently broke. On this next unit, I will definitely wrap the cord differently so it doesn't short like the original one I head. I believe this next unit could last me another 10 years. This product is so reliable, i'd rather buy a used model than a brand new KitchenAid Pro Hand Mixer. Too bad they don't sell them in the US anymore!. Look on Ebay for deals on used models - It's worth it!
