Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Braun M880 Multimix 4-in-1 Hand MixerCustomer Review: Utilitarian and powerful but with a cheap feel Summary: 4 Stars
I would really like to give this item 4.5 stars.
The good:
So far it works great on everything I've tried it with, and it's very versatile, exactly what I was looking for. As far as I know there isn't another product like this on the market.
The immersion blender is amazing for blended soups, and the chopper/food processor is better at chopping than the magic bullet, my black and decker food processor, or the small food chopper that my mom gave me. I think it might be the blade design that helps here, but it's a lot easier to get everything chopped up finely with this one than with anything I've used before.
Now on to the bad:
The multimix feels cheap. The beaters don't lock in very securely and there is a significant amount of wobbling. At first I thought I didn't have them in correctly, but I did, that's just how the unit is. It doesn't feel like something that will last a real long time, which is a shame because I really do love this unit.
There are no replacement parts available that I can see. I'd love to get another chopper attachment and blade. With as much as I've found myself using that part it would really come in handy to have another for when it's in the dishwasher, or for when I'm using the original chopper bowl for storage (another handy feature). Alas, apparently I would have to buy another mulbimix to have another chopper attachment.
When I washed the chopper attachment in the dishwasher (top rack, as specified in the manual), the part that connects to the handmixer became full of water. It's virtually impossible to get all of the water out, and that's pretty gross.
In summary:
I don't regret my purchase because it is a great unit and it seems to be the only unit on the market with all the features I was looking for, but there is certainly room for improvement. I would easily be willing to pay double the cost of this unit for something with a more sturdy feel and replacement parts available.
Customer Review: Utterly Fantastic! One of the Best!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This 4-in-1 Multimix by Braun is simply fantastic. I've had mine for 7 years...that's 7 years of HEAVY use, meaning at least daily use and it's finally about to kick the bucket. I've just ordered my replacement and thought I should go ahead and pipe up with my comments and thoughts on this wonderful product! I've used all four attachments on al manner of items and never had a problem with a "wimpy" motor...in fact, the motor on this baby seems to be quite powerful. The chopper is small, so it's not going to take the place of your food processor if you use it for making big batches of stuff...but if your family is like mine and all you really need is to be able to make small batches of salsa and chopped veggies...heck I've even made a huge amount of roasted red pepper sauce for salmon in it...then the chopper attachment is going to be perfect for you! The stick blender is great for smoothing/blending soups (like cream of potato) or tomatoes and has such force that it suctions to the bottom of the pot/bowl you're working with, so you don't have to worry about power being a factor here! The dough hooks are ideal for things like pizza dough and small batches of rolls....you wouldn't think so looking at them, but go on...give them a try, you'll be surprised at how well they work! Finally, the mixer/beaters...they are some of the best on the market and stand up well to even the thickest batters without any problems. Additionally, clean up couldn't be easier...wipe the unit down and all the attachments remove for scrubbing (obviously you can't submerge the stick blender or chopper), but these are easy enough to rinse right after use and to a quick scrub and rinse with the rest of your dishes!! So you can see why we're so pleased and I can tell you that I'm looking forward to receiving my new one and that I am looking forward to at least another 7 years of service with this one! I give it five stars and recommend it without hesitation!
Customer Review: Good Value, Versatile Appliance Especially For Small Household Summary: 4 Stars
I came across this unit when initially looking for a hand mixer. I read the reviews, and showed the link to some friends. Before making the purchase, I was mainly concerned about the quality and durability of the unit.
The unit recently came, and I am very pleased with it. It is well suited for singles, couples, and small households. My kitchen is small so I like that the same appliance can both mix and chop.
The chopper is great in just a few seconds it completely chopped an onion. With cheese you must put in smaller amounts, or the blade will get caught. However, again, it did a good job with the cheese in small batches.
You wouldn't necessarily use this if cooking for 10 people or if you owned a restaurant, but it is great for what it is meant to be and to do. I paid about $45, and it was a good value. I would recommend that you buy it using a credit card that doubles your manufacturers warranty. I mean I would not be surprised if it breaks in 3 years, I was nervous the choppper was going to break having too much cheese in it. But still for $45 its probably not going to run through generations in the family.
I would give it 5 stars if:
*The cord retracted inside the unit. Cord must be manually wrapped around the unit; and
*If the chopper could handle larger quantities of items like cheese.
I spent quite a bit of time reading through the various mixer reviews, and if I had to do it all over again, I would still purchase this product for its versatility and performance. In fact my sister, who lives in Europe, wants us to order this exact item and have the next person visiting Europe bring it to her for her apartment.
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
Customer Review: SUCH a Shame. :( Summary: 5 Stars
I just happened to visit this page and am really saddened to learn that this little mixer is no longer being manufactured. I bought it several years ago because it had become evident that there were times that I really needed the services of an electric mixer but that a stand mixer would be overkill for my needs (I'm now looking into an Electrolux Assistent 2000). I chose the Braun M880 based on customer reviews and the knowledge that it was manufactured in Spain, not in the hinterlands of East Asia and at about $30 + free shipping, it was the steal to end all steals. To be honest, I don't really use it as anything but a mixer and believe me, it does a terrific job. I don't think I'd want to tax it by using the dough hooks but for ordinary mixing, it's a little thug that easily bullies its way through thick batters and such, quickly and with aplomb. I had Braun's first stick blender years ago (bought in the '80s) and while it didn't last forever, I got a lot of good years of use out of it and I imagine that the stick attachment for this does a good job, especially given just how powerful this motor is for its size.
This thoughtfully designed system is a testament to just how nice Braun's appliances were--not something you'd find in a commercial kitchen or in the homes of those foodies who think food prep relies on food-service (or at least "professional") equipment, but definitely in those of folks who like to cook and who expect value and functionality for their money. The M880 was a real standout--if you have one, treasure it and if you can find one for sale (preferably new) and think you'll use it, jump all over it--we'll not be seeing its like again. I wish I'd bought a backup, just in case.
Customer Review: Simple, well-designed, responsibly-manufactured mixer Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a Braun MR5550MBC Immersion Blender to replace my dying, crummy Black & Decker hand-held mixer. And while I really like the new gadget, it doesn't really do the two-bladed "mixer" thing (needed for things like mixing crepe/pancake batter). So it got an M880 as well, and I'm glad I did.
First, it's well-made yet inexpensive (I got it under $30). And unlike most other cheap -- and even expensive -- handheld mixers made in China, the M880 is made in Spain. This is important to me for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is the use of safe materials and the labor issues... but that's another matter.
The mixer is lightweight and seemingly powerful enough for small jobs. (For large jobs, I use a KitchenAid bowl mixer - I love it, but it's too much fuss for a quick mix.) The M880 feels good in the hand, and the switch is conveniently located. The blades are tough, and easy to attach and remove. (Note that they're not symmetrical; make sure to match the symbols on the motor with the shapes of inserts.)
The downside is that the chopper bowl, the immersion blender (which I really didn't need), and the cup are all plastic (and the chopper bowl may leech Bisphenol-A). But the two mixing blades and the two kneading hooks are stainless steel, and that's all I really use anyway. (The immersion attachment that comes with my MR5550MBC is stainless steel, which I use in a large glass Mason jar - no plastic here.)
Aside from the accessories I didn't need, this is a great little mixer, one I'd easily recommend to anyone.
