Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Braun KF590 Impressions Digital 10-Cup Programmable CoffeemakerCustomer Review: best coffee maker Summary: 5 Stars
you don't even need to look at another coffee maker. this is the best i have seen. my inlaws use bunn coffee makers, and i am surprised how much more coffee you have to use in them. the coffee maker at work has a carafe that you have to pour extremely slow or it will drip.
the other coffee makers i have had, (mr. coffee... ect.) didn't last long, and the paper filters folded over while brewing. this one has a metal filter that works as good as day one, and i have had it for over three years with no problems.
two heaping scoops of coffee makes a full pot of strong, hot coffee. and i wash everything in the dishwasher (carafe, lid, basket, metal filter).
some people don't like the water filter, but as long as you have good water, you don't need to use it. i never even used the filter that came with the maker.
the only knock i have, (and it is my fault, not brauns) is if you get coffee grounds in between the coffee maker and the basket, it will clog, and coffee will go everywhwere.
if you want a nice looking, dependable, affordable, economical, easy to use coffee maker, look no farther.
if you buy a bunn for the status symbol, don't say i didn't warn you.
Customer Review: Great product for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I received this over Christmas so it's been use for about a month. The design is sharp and is compact for tight counter spaces. Brewing is very fast, much faster than my previous cheaper Mr. Coffee. I use the Brita filter even though I already use filtered water. I figure filtering the water twice can't be a bad thing? The gold-toned filter works great. It makes a very good tasting coffee. The coffee does come out hot, much hotter than my previous coffeemaker. But don't leave it on the hot plate for too long. It doesn't keep the coffee hot very well. You'll have to make sure you're drinking coffee right after it's made. Another negative is the way you open the filter basket. Oftentimes, it gets stuck and I'll have to physically open it even when pressing the button. I've noticed that weight may be an issue. It opens fine when filed with used coffee grinds but when empty, it has problems.
My conclusion is that for the price, you can't go wrong. I can't comment on how it works compared to much pricier models but I did research those pretty extensively. I decided that it wasn't worth the extra $100 or more bucks. This product does the job and it does it well.
Customer Review: good coffeemaker but imperfect design Summary: 4 Stars
I got this for christmas, and it makes a good hot cup of coffee. I don't think the mesh filter is quite tight enough, though. I need to use a little more coffee to get the same strength as on my previous Braun, which used paper filters.
The styling is beautiful, the water change dial on top is kinda cheesy as someone else mentioned. But one thing is bothering me and it can only be bad design. The filter holder (the chrome part that swings out) hangs on a carrier via two hooks. The holder has a small semicircular tab on the inside top edge. When I take the filter out, it gets caught on this tab about 1 out of 4 times (especially if I'm in a hurry for my java fix), and the filter holder gets askew on the carrier or even knocked off entirely. Now, I have never been a klutzy person, but this thing has got me worried! I don't think the little tab has any purpose, so I'm going to cut it off. But it would be better if Braun cut it off prior to packing. :)
edit: I've gotten the hang of taking the filter out, but the filter is just a pinch too tall for the holder, and I think that causes the problem with both removing and closing the holder.
Customer Review: This Braun make a strong, hot, cup of coffee Summary: 5 Stars
Have been using the Braun KF590 for two weeks now and have been very pleased. The coffeemaker looks sleek, takes up very little counter space and is easy to program. The cup markings on the side of the water tank are easy to read and are helpful when adding water to the tank. As with most coffee pots, this one does not really make ten cups of coffee since the average coffee mug is larger than four ounces. When making a pot for two people (two large mugs per person), I typically use nine scoops of dark roast ground coffee and add nine cups of water. It takes about ten minutes to brew and the coffee comes out strong and very hot. The filter basket is easy to open and remove for filling and/or cleaning. I am currently using the water filter that came with the pot but really don't notice any difference in the coffee flavor with the filter. Also, I prefer to use the #4 paper filter instead of the reusable mesh filter. I have not experienced any problem with spillage during pouring although you may want to pour a little slower when you are down to the last cup. This Braun so far is performing perfectly and hopefully will continue to do so for several more years.
Customer Review: filter door flips open - causes mess Summary: 3 Stars
I got this Braun as a replacement for my 10 year old Braun.
2 complaints-
1) I've noticed a plastic taste with several coffee makers..I'll live with the Braun for 2 weeks and see if it dissipates...if not it goes back. Krups was by far worse in the plastic taste department, so at least Braun it might be OK with some time.
2) The spring loaded filter door latch doesn't firmly hold the filter in the closed position. It pops open and water drips everywhere, since the coffee filter is in the "out" position. I initially used scotch tape to hold the filter door closed. Then I partly disassembled the top and removed the torsion spring. Now the door stays closed. The button to release the door is not needed anyway. For years I just pulled the filter door in or out, and never thought anything fancier gizmo was needed.
I'd have been happier if Braun spent money on better plastic materials with less outgassing...I don't like drinking plastic-flavored coffee.
