Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Braun KF590 Impressions Digital 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Customer Review: Wastes coffee and already broken
Summary: 3 Stars

I am not normally a complainer but this coffee maker was disappointing for the money. Next time it's whatever the local drug store has on sale. First the good things ... it's great looking out of the box and the small size is a real plus to save counter top space. Either cone shaped paper filters or the provided screen can be used. It makes 10 cups of good hot coffee very fast ... which changes me over to the bad points. I like deep flavorful coffee that can only be achieved by brewing slower than this unit allows. You must FILL the water or the coffee will be unbelieveably weak. I have to use twice the amount of coffee to achieve half the taste of the coffee made by my old Krups (rest in peace). No matter how much coffee I use over filling the filter half full, the flavor is the same. If I use what the directions tell me to of the same coffee I've been using for years, I can read a news paper through a full pot. The button and spring that makes the grounds door open stopped working within the first week. The grounds/filter holder somehow has a distroted shape now and the coffee maker looks to have an extended lower jaw. The swinging door and the top don't line up now and the door sometimes pops open ... weird. The The shiny black surface is now satin and has lost its new look after only two weeks of careful care. The chord is made of some cheap plastic crap that retains the factory wrapped up shape perfectly no matter how you try to straighten it out. Maybe someone will buy it in my garage sale coming up. Sincerely written.

Customer Review: Thank you Amazon reviewers
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Braun KF590 to replace a four month old Cuisnart DCC-450 that was purchased by my wife at a local store and was a complete disaster. (My review of the hunk of junk can be found elsewhere on Amazon.) Anyway, older and wiser I consulted Amazon reviews before buying my Braun KF590 and I want to thank everyone who took the time to write the great reviews that led to my choice.

I though about giving the KF590 only 4 stars because of the price, but let's not be petty. Here's the plus side:

* It more than meets Patty's attractiveness standards for her newly remodeled kitchen with its granite counter top.

* You can load and fire up the baby in about 60 seconds when you are dashing to work and it brews quickly.

* The freshly brewed coffee is hot. (A trade-off is that it produces some steam at the end of the brew cycle, so I find it prudent to pull it out from under the kitchen cabinet above while it is brewing.)

* The controls are simple and feel solid.

* The carafe is easy to pour without splilling. It looks nice, feels solid and has a great grip.

Because we have good tap water, I can't comment on the Brita filters. As for coffee filters: This pot takes a No. 4 filter, but it works fine with a No. 2 if you are only making a few cups. (Just in case you were wondering what to do with all those leftover No. 2 filters!)

Thanks again, everyone! --Jeff

Customer Review: every day starts in a bad mood...
Summary: 1 Stars

i'm a big fan of customer loyalty and when i was a starving artist in my 20's i decided to spend the extra money for a braun coffee maker. that machine lasted about 12 years so when it died recently i felt that i made a wise decision by buying a braun product before so i, of course, wanted to buy a braun again. i regret to say it was a bad decision.

the main problem is that the BASKET DOES NOT STAY CLOSED. after the first time you go into the kitchen in the morning and find coffee all over your counter and floor you try and diagnose the problem. the problem is that the SPRING LOADED LATCH THAT KEEPS THE BASKET CLOSED HAS A 1 MILLIMETER DEGREE OF TOLERANCE. if the machine is even touched the basket swings open, especially in the middle of brewing. if you don't stand there and babysit the thing you're in for a big mess.

i tried to" jerry-rig" the basket by taking a piece if metal and sticking it into the crease were the hinge is but even if the basket moves an eighth of an inch the flow from the basket misses the hole in the top of the carafe and DRIBBLES DOWN THE SIDE OF THE CARAFE ONTO THE HOTPLATE making you scrub the burnt coffee off of the bottom of the carafe when it's done.

i have only taken the time out of my busy schedule to write a review once before and that was to praise a product. i don't want other people starting their day off the way i have since i bought this machine .. IN A REALLY BAD MOOD!

Customer Review: It's Just a Great Coffee Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced a new Mr Coffee - coffee maker that was simply miserable to use with this one. I'll go through why I like it in this review. If you don't want to read the full review - just know that it's a great coffee maker.

My one con:
The water level indicator on the side of the coffee maker tells how many cups of coffee you will get in the pot not how much water you poured into the coffee maker. You always loose some water that gets trapped by the coffee grounds, some evaporates, etc. It's just odd to me to pour 8 cups of coffee in the coffee maker and have it read 7.5 cups - which is exactly how much coffee winds up in the pot.

The pros:
It makes a great, hot and fast cup of coffee. My wife said the thing must be turbocharged.
It has a Brita water filter which really helps remove the nasty taste in city water. We use Brita water pitchers too.
I read some reviews that talked about the pot dripping when poured or steaming up or something. After using this coffee maker for a month or so, everything works just fine and just exactly the way you would expect it to.
It has some neat features - clock, programmable brew time, programmable time for the hot plate to stay hot before turning off.
It has the V shaped basket which I believe makes a better tasting cup of coffee.

What can I say? I bought it here on Amazon. I'm happy with it. I would buy it again.

Customer Review: Blasted Spring Loaded Basket!
Summary: 3 Stars

Got this Braun to replace a Zojirushi coffee maker that just wore out. I can't comment on the taste of the coffee as my wife is the coffee drinker in the family. She seems to like it. Pretty clean design and simple controls. She really preferred a coffee maker with a thermal carafe but settled on this one as the glass carafe is easier to clean (you can actually get into it as opposed to a thermal carafe with a small opening). So far no complaints about the coffee. I would like to say that the "cheapo" plastic knob on the top that you set to remind you to replace the water filter is a bit lame. I thought it was a knob for brew strength when I bought it. Guess I didn't research it enough. There is one problem with this design. The blasted spring loaded filter basket holder. I read the reviews on this before I bought it but thought this might be limited to a few out of spec units. Well, it's not. One reviewer said that he solved this problem by partial disassembly of the top and then removing the spring so he know manually opens the swing out basket. I've looked at this and tried to prod and pry and haven't been able to duplicate this feat. If anyone has done this please post a comment or send me an email with a DiY. I'm sure that we can all benefit from this. Thanks in advance. BTW, bought this on Amazon but through a seller(DiscountJungle) as Amazon didn't have it in stock. No problems there.
