Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Pavina 8.5-Ounce Double-Wall Thermo Tumber/DOF Glass, Set of 2

Customer Review: Beautiful, functional, just be attentive
Summary: 5 Stars

The sleek, elegant aesthetic of these glasses had me smitten once I saw them online. I was fortunate enough to receive a full set of varying sizes (12-oz, 15 oz and some mugs) for Christmas last year (2009) and I am glad to report that I simply LOVE them.

Granted: Between my husband and I, we broke three 15-oz ones in the past year that we had them (and have bought 2 replacements thus far). That said, we broke two of them (on separate occasions) while washing, when our hands are soapy and essentially bashed them against the side of the sink. The third one we broke out of sheer clumsiness, when I dropped the entire glass when handing it to my husband to put away :(

Thankfully we have no had any issues with breakage due to ice cubes or stirring with metal spoons etc., that I have read in some reviews.

The 12-oz glasses and Bodum Bistro Double-Wall Insulated 10-Ounce Glass Mug, Set of 2, that we use on a daily basis for hot and cold beverages, are holding up really well, no scratches or any sign of wear at all. I believe, due to the shape of the glasses and how thinly the glass is "stretched", the smaller/shorter the glass, the more durable it is because the glass is denser.

With regard to children, when our little nieces (ages 5 and 8) visit, we're not nervous about having them use these glasses. They are pretty careful about using them and are constantly intrigued by the 'floating water'.

Overall, I would recommend these glasses, as long as you exercise a little bit more care when handling them, or at least, not have the mindset that they're indestructible. Yes, they're expensive, they're gorgeous to look at, but remember that they're also glass and glass = fragile.

Customer Review: Beautifully designed, functional, hand-made near-perfection
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered the 9-ounce version six months ago to use with my daily tea and my occasional Scotch. I am happy with my purchase and here it is why:

- The borosilicate glass, besides being strong, is the least likely to be stained by coffee or detergents. Six month later, I can confirm: no stains whatsoever.
- The double-wall design keeps the hot drinks (my tea) hot longer and prevents condensation from forming when holding cold drinks.
- Can pour in very hot drinks without the glass cracking. Not only am I pouring literally near-boiling tea, but the double wall keep the exterior cool.
- Dishwasher safe (but use common sense because even borosilicate glass is still glass). I almost always wash them by hand.
- Hand-made in China.
- Beautiful design.

The only slight disappointment, but I got over it, was the initial 'feel' of the glasses. By just looking at the glasses, you would expect something heavy, crystal like but they are not. It's not surprising, given that the walls are not solid glass but two thin layers of extra-strong glass with air in between. They also don't 'sound' like crystal. So, if the weight and the sound don't bother you, these are great glasses.

I must confess, one of the 2 glasses broke a couple of months ago - someone dropped it - so I was left with only one glass since. I am about to order another pair now, just in case.

Customer Review: Tough enough for a college student!
Summary: 5 Stars

I will admit, I could have continued to use disposable paper cups for my espresso I make in my dorm room. But then again, that way kept reminding me of just how POOR I am. (Not to mention it was hard to drink the entire beverage before it was cold.)

These glasses are beautifully designed, smooth to the touch, and even for someone with large hands as me, fill your palm comfortably.

But I have to agree with other reviewers. I am able to wash them by hand in the bathroom sink without worrying about shredding my hands if I bump into the faucet or side of the sink. The reason most people would think these glasses so fragile is their light weight. It really is something incredible. When I first picked them out of the packaging, I was thinking "Great. These will last 3 days tops." I have been using them for much longer.

Being able to drink from something other than a dixie cup or Solo cup (or even aluminum can) is a very welcome change as well. It feels more like home.

Anyways. If these can withstand being with me, they will be quite safe at your home.

I am recommending these to everyone I know.

EDIT: April/09: Still have them. They are *STILL* in perfect condition. I've used ice with them, even dropped them an inch or two. They've been moved to and from several dorm rooms and even apartments.

Customer Review: These are the perfect size if you like dairy with your espresso extraction
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the shot size, the larger 12-oz size, but my favorites are this size. Here are my reasons for the five-star grade:

- They fit under my espresso machine spout so I don't have to use an intermediate container
- They're short enough to allow steaming of half-and-half or milk right in the glass
- The insulation keeps hands from the heat while frothing in the glass
- The rounded shape is a pleasure to hold and the smooth edges are great to drink out of
- They keep the drink warm if I'm at my desk and sipping occasionally
- They are great for serving several people since you have time to accumulate a few cups while the beverage stays hot as you're extracting espresso one by one
- And they look really beautiful especially with a layer of deep brown espresso, a layer of steamed milk or half and half, and a head of froth.

Yes, they're pricey, but they are an indulgence completely worth it. Hey, you'd spend that much on a few cups of espresso from a shop, but you can have these for ever (or until you break them - and it isn't all that easy to do that. I hand wash and once in a while they land harder than I'd like on a granite countertop, but I haven't broken any yet)

Customer Review: excellent product, surprisingly sturdy
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased these after seeing them on the Bodum.com website. I admit the cool factor lured me in.

The cups maintain the temperature of a cappuccino for as long as it takes me to get to the bottom of the cup. Additionally it is nice not to need coasters (especially if you have men or children in the home).

The 9 oz cup is less than 4 inches tall, making it fit perfectly under the fill spout of my super-automatic Saeco espresso machine (which I also love).

My husband and I have had 4 of these cups for more than 6 months and not one of them has broken. I mention this because the 9 oz cups seem to be much more sturdy than the 21 oz Pavina ice tea glasses. We broke one of the 21 oz cups with the first ice cube that went into the cup. We broke 2 others in the first two weeks.

Bottom line, I cannot recommend the 21 oz Pavina. However, the 9 oz Pavina cups are very tough, having survived 6 months of daily use with less than dainty owners. I think you will be very pleased with your purchase of the 9 oz Pavina cups.

UPDATE: JULY 18, 2006
All 4 of the 9 ounce Pavina mugs are still intact even with frequent use. I continue to recommend this product.
