Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Chambord Coffee PressCustomer Review: Simpler to use than I had anticipated Summary: 4 Stars
Okay, after reading the (mostly)great reveiws I had to get one of these for myself! The first time I tried it out I mistakenly only put 4 spoonfuls of ground coffee so it turned out way to weak. So then the next time I did it with 8 spoonfuls and the coffee turned out great!
I found that you have to have the water quite hot in order to get a good brew going and make sure to steep it for the 4-5 minutes suggested. A full pot made two and a half good size cups of coffee. At his first sip my husband said to me "the coffee isn't very strong" at which I replied "The press makes the coffee richer not stronger." Hee, hee!
Cleaning not so bad, the press portion requires a bit more rinsing to get the coffee grounds out between the screen and metal portion.
We only use the coffee press during the weekends since we have no time on weekday mornings to grind the coffee, boil the water and have the it steep for 4-5 minutes. Also remember that the coffee does not stay hot if left in the glass so if you make more than you can drink in one sitting you can put it in a thermal type bottle. This is the perfect size for my husband and I.
Customer Review: It's Not Perfect But Still Satisfactory Summary: 3 Stars
This coffee press does what it's supposed to do; however, I have some issues with it. First, the 8-cup size is more like 4 cups since most people drink out of mugs. Second, there's been a lot posted about the oils and particulates in the coffee being essential to a full-bodied cup of coffee, and so on. While that may be for some people, for others it results in heartburn. I've always used the drip method with a filter and have made fine coffee (everyone likes my coffee); but it was a slow way to go, especially with company, so I thought the Bodum would be more satisfactory. What I discovered with the press (even with coarse grind coffee) is that if tried to pour all the coffee out of the pot, I'd get lots of residue and coffee grounds in the cup. Since I buy expensive organic coffee, I'm not pleased with having to leave half cup of coffee in the pot. Now when I use the Bodum, I do a hybrid method and pour through a filter after I press it--which rather makes the coffee press redundant though a tad faster. Finally, to those people to whom such things matter, the Bodum looks good on the kitchen counter and will attest to your sophistication.
Customer Review: I ordered glass, but got plastic Summary: 3 Stars
A friend loaned me this great coffee press. It's the best coffee brewing system I've found, but more time consuming to use and clean up. Please note also that 8 cups is wildly optimistic. That's four-ounce cups. I real life, you get about two good 10-12 ounce mugs of coffee.
At the time I ordered, the item was described on Amazon as having a glass beaker, but the one I received was plastic.
Some may prefer this because it's unbreakable; I was disappointed. I specifically wanted the glass one because I trying to avert plastic's that might leech chemicals into food. The plastic version also differed in that filter screen was held together with some plastic components, whereas the glass version uses all metal parts (with the exception of the lid).
I ended up returning the item (which sours the whole on-line shopping experience) and buying a glass version at a local retailer instead. One where I could verify I was getting the glass version that I desired. I'm very happy with it and use it daily.
So, if you want to order this item from Amazon, please double-check that your getting what you want.
Customer Review: Wonderful press! Summary: 5 Stars
My hubby and I got this as a wedding present 3+ years ago. At the time we were using a cheap press because we didn't know better and had a wedding to pay for. We got this gift and it sat in the box after the wedding because we still didn't know better and our cheap one was still "working" pretty good. Well, I dropped the old one in the sink and broke it so we pulled out this Bodum Chambord French Press and I was immediately kicking myself for not busting it out the second we received it!
There are no tiny screws or fiddley parts, it all screws together without any extra bits that are so easy to lose. It has a superior filter than the one we had, no muck in the cup like before. It feels solid and well made, no wobble on the counter when you plunge your grounds. Its handle stays cool while the coffee steeps and it is good looking to boot!
The coffee tasted so much better than before, which I attribute to a superior screen filter. It is very easy to clean and nothing has broken in almost 3 years of daily use.
I liked using a french press before the Bodum Chambord, now I LOVE it.
Customer Review: Fast, Easy, and Delicious Summary: 5 Stars
This product is nothing short of extraordinary. I've been a coffee drinker all of my life, and thought the only choices were brewing a full pot or making instant. Boy, was I mistaken. The product is simple: buy some coffee ground coarse, so the grinds don't flow through the steel mesh filter. Then, pour a few tablespoons of grinds in the container. Add hot water, let sit for a minute or two, and slowly press down. What your left with is a great tasting cup of coffee. If you're used to fresh-brewed, this will be a tiny bit different. At the bottom of your cup you'll find some very fine residue. But this is very fine indeed. One other difference - it will taste better. I believe it's been said that you get more flavor because you retain all of the oils in the bean. Cleaning the product is pretty easy. Just rinse the filter and scoop out the grinds. It's not a perfect system - cleaning grinds out of the glass container takes a long spoon and a good rinse. I can't believe it's taken me this long to find this product. It's fast, easy, delicious, and cheap. You will not be disappointed.
