Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Chambord 3 cup French Press Coffee Maker, 12 oz., Chrome

Customer Review: Great for the office!
Summary: 4 Stars

I originally bought this because my office serves the most horrible coffee I have ever tasted. We weren't permitted to have appliances at our desks, so I had to look at coffee presses rather than a small electrical brewer. I have to say that I am more than pleased with this press.

Pros:
* It can easily be disassembled for cleaning
* Comes with a scoop for measuring coffee
* Looks nice sitting on my desk

Cons:
* The beaker feels fragile

Conclusion:
This coffee press was more than worth the money to me. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is because the beaker feels a bit fragile. I have owned this press about 4 months now and have not had an incident, although I have read about people breaking their beakers. As long as you are careful there is no reason this beaker should break. I have found that most people who have cracked the beaker have pressed down on the plunger far too hard and too quickly. Push the plunger in a slow, steady, and gentle manner and there is no reason it should not last.

Customer Review: A great little press!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this press to supplement a larger 8-cup model. The press allows just under one standard size mug to be filled. If you also are looking for a mug's worth of coffee, I would recommend purchasing the 4-cup model as that would leave just a bit more room, and keep more of the small grindings in the press, rather than in the bottom of my cup.
Also, it should be noted that Bodum sells the spare parts for this press (right here on Amazon, in fact), so if you should break it, a few dollars will get you back in Java!
Another note, some people have mentioned that dumping the grindings proves problematic as you can't just put them down the drain (plugs up your trap). I have found an easy solution in using the plastic and wire mesh grind basket of my last automatic coffee maker as a strainer. I just pour the bit of water and grinds out of the press and into the basket (which I leave in the sink), and allow the water to run off. Then I pour shake the dry coffee into the trash. No fuss, and the basket is dishwasher safe for the occasional cleaning.

Customer Review: Glass Breaks Too Easily
Summary: 1 Stars

DO NOT BUY ANY BODUM COFFEE OR TEA PRESS THAT CONTAINS GLASS. BODUM USES A SPECIAL BOROSILICATE GLASS THAT IS EXTRAORDINARILY FRAGILE AND BREAKS FOR NO APPARENT REASON.

I love Bodum Coffee Presses. But I would NEVER recommend anyone buy one with a glass beaker. You will need to replace the beaker frequently, since the special glass Bodum uses is extremely fragile, and breaks repeatedly for no apparent reason at all. I replaced four beakers, two glass tea presses, and several beakers from milk frothers in short order before giving up. Make no mistake, you do not have to bang the glass against anything for it to break. It simply cracks spontaneously for no apparent reason

Bodum has come out with some presses with a LEXAN clear plastic beaker.
These do not break. I assume they came out with the LEXAN product because of problems with the glass. Be warned.

If you do buy this product, buy a half dozen replacement beakers at the same time. You will need them.

Customer Review: For those who love Cafe Au Lait a great coffee press!
Summary: 5 Stars

My sister bought this press for the house. This one works real well-- perfect for those coffee press users. Bodum is also a well known brand of coffee press, so you don't have to worry about a flimsy product. Also if it breaks, Bodum is pretty good with spare parts. As a comsumer, I always recommend you shop around for the best price.

When using a coffee press, or any other coffee machine, make sure you FRESHLY grind your coffee for optimal taste. I recommend all serious coffee drinkers to invest in a good burr grinder-- you really can taste the differnce. Also for a coffee press the ginds must be large and coarse in thickness, otherwise your pressed coffee will taste lousy-- do not use automatic drip sized grinds. I also recommend a quality dark/French roast when using a press.

Please note that this press makes 3 French-sized cups of coffee. In Paris cafes, you're served coffee in a press with a "bowl sized" cup half filled with steamed milk (Cafe Au Lait).

Customer Review: THE CREME DE LA CREME OF COFFEE
Summary: 5 Stars

Bodum stands for quality in function as well as design, which is certainly evident in our Bodum Chambord French Press Coffee Maker. Coffee is more than delicious and the preparation a breeze.

The coffee maker is attractive with a chrome plated steel top and trim. A black Bakelite handle provides a secure grip and is ergonomically friendly.

We'd recommend using a rather coarse grind of coffee as a fine grind may clog the filter, and stir with a plastic or wooden spoon rather than metal. Those two suggestions aside simply measure coffee, heat water and pour water over coffee in carafe. Let brew for about 3 - 4 minutes before using the pressing mechanism. Then, depress this mechanism slowly, and there you are - the best coffee this side of Paree.

You'll think it couldn't be any better, but next time add frothed milk (Bodum does make a superior frother) or a dash of whipped cream sprinkled with a small dash of cinnamon. Tres bien!
