Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Chambord 3 cup French Press Coffee Maker, 12 oz., ChromeCustomer Review: Easy and Fast Summary: 5 Stars
I can only echo the fine reviews that have been submitted for the Bodum 3-cup French Press: it's quick and it's easy, and it makes the finest cup of brewed coffee this side of real espresso. My girlfriend loves coffee, pure and simple. I wanted to be able to save a few bucks on her lattes, so I bought a decent espresso machine and a conical burr grinder, and learned how to make a great latte. But I saw many people who were using French Presses, and it looked so easy that I bought this model, which is certainly inexpensive enough to give it a try. But please be aware that "3 cup French Press" does not yield 3 mugs of coffee! This has been stated so many times in these reviews that I can't believe the #1 complaint in negative reviews is that "it doesn't make anywhere near 3 cups." Read the reviews first!!! It might make 2 cups if you take your coffee in fine china, cup-and-saucer style, but for most of us, it yields exactly 1 MUG of coffee. Perfect for those who drink just one cup in the morning. If you drink more, do not get this one, Bodum makes several larger models.
I follow the exact directions provided in the box and here on the web site: coarse grind, pour hot water to within 1 inch of the top, stir several times with plastic spoon, place plunger on the top and let sit for a full 4 minutes, then gently push down the plunger. It couldn't be easier. I showed my gf how to do it one time, and she loved the coffee. The next time I showed up at her house, she had the French Press out on the table, and told me she now uses it "every day". The best part about the French Press is that you don't have to make more than you need. Her "Mr. Coffee-type" brewer made 4 cups at its minimum setting, so she was always wasting most of it. This Bodum cleans up in a jiffy, no filter papers needed, and makes great coffee. Now, you don't need to be a perfectionist like me to enjoy this. I measure out exactly 14 g of beans and set the burr grinder to "coarse" and grind away, so I never waste coffee. I'm sure you could use 2 scoops (scoop provided in the box) of pre-ground coffee and get good results. This is a winner!
Customer Review: Perfect for Morning Ritual! Summary: 5 Stars
The three cupper is perfect for a home of one even if one has a friend over!
The reviews about optimum taste are true. For instance, I have used a
big brand name four cupper drip model, and the flavor of the Gevalia beans
was not processed with justice. I also have owned an expensive electric espresso
maker, and I consider that with a matching Bodum milk frother, this value priced
product is equally good, simpler to use, easier to clean. Yes, there is some mess,
but wash up is easy by hand or in the dishwasher. I let the grinds rest
for a few hours to dry out before scooping them into the waste bin. A scattered
few customers have found clean up to be a problem, but I do not agree.
A seven inch long silicone mini spatula is perfect for stirring the grinds at the
start of making the coffee and later for scooping out the grinds. I recommend
using the mini silicone spatula instead resusing or wasting a plastic spoon.
I was unsure about using a three cupper, thought I'd ordered the four cupper.
Happily, the flavor is so intense, similar to espresso, that I am getting my
caffeine fix after two mugs. Actually, that would be two mugs a tad past half full
and topped with frothed milk. Other reviewers are concerned about maintaining heat,
but it is easy to warm coffee and milk in a microwave proof mug. It's colorful and cute,
but I do not need the Bodum coat or the equivalent of a tea cozy. Sometimes ONE mug
is enough for me. A friend can share a mug or I can save it. I have discovered that
cafe au lait keeps well in the fridge. So, verily, this is the best home brewed coffee.
With or without added flavor, it is as delicious as at High Profile Coffee Houses!
Customer Review: A Wonderful Way to Make Coffee Summary: 5 Stars
If you have never tried coffee made using a coffee press, you are missing a real treat. Everything you read in the reviews about how different coffee tastes when made in a press is very true. Just remember to have your coffee ground just as coarsely as possible; if you grind your own use the most coarse setting on your grinder. Heat the water to just below boiling and add to the coffe in the press. (I just use the scoop that comes with the press.) Stir the grounds using a plastic implement (I use a shrimp deveiner.) until a foam appears on the surface. Then set a timer for about 4 minutes and be a little patient. Your wait will be amply rewarded by some of the best coffee you have ever had.
This product is the third coffee press that I have owned. My first broke and my second is an eight cup model. The eight cupper is really to large for making coffee for just one person. (I am the only person in my house the enjoys the brown bean.) This Bodum model is easily the most sturdy best performing model I have tried. The glass carafe has thick walls and can be removed from the base for cleaning. The entire unit is well made. Units this size are difficult to find in stores where one typically finds the eight cup press. I took a chance at Amazon and purchased a press that was offerred at a very low price for a unit in a damaged box. The box was trashed but the press was in perfect condition!
The prices here on Amazon are about the best I found anywhere. Even eBay could not match the selectoin offerred at Amazon. Again, I strongly recommend that you give a coffee press a try, you will not be disappointed.
Customer Review: Perfect for one cup. Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this as a 1-person coffeemaker because the other 2 coffee drinkers around here complained that I made coffee too strong. Although this is a 3-cup press (each cup = 4 oz, European standards, I suppose) it's really perfect for just one mug. I can almost fill my 14 oz travel mug, and I only ever drink one cup in the morning, so capacity is perfect for me. If you drink lots of mugs, don't get this!
I got one of these in a discount store for only a few dollars, which was a great bargain! Following the suggestion of 3 tablespoons of coarsely ground beans with 12 oz H2O, my coffee comes out as strong as I like it. There's sediment, but that doesn't bother me. Reminds me of Turkish coffee. Clean-up is a little more involved than with a drip maker, but I like the press coffee better, so that doesn't bother me either. The only thing that can truly bother me about coffee is when it isn't strong enough.
Of course, the coffee cools quite quickly if you leave it in the press too long, so I just pour it into the vacuum mug right away, where it stays at temp much longer.
Also, as a control freak, this brewing method is appealing because it allows me to boil the water to the exact temp it needs to be (yes, I use a thermometer. I did say I was a freak). I love this method of brewing coffee, but clean-up and sediment might not be OK with everyone.
Considering the price I paid, I give this 5 stars. It happens to match my coffee needs exactly.
Customer Review: Bodum 1923-16 Chambord 3-Cup Coffee Press Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this item over a month ago because there weren't enough people at the office that drank coffee to make a full pot or even half that. Also, I wanted to cut back in the amount of coffee as well as improve the quality of the coffee I was drinking everyday. This item is O.K. for brewing a small amount of coffee - a very small amount, I should have looked into it a bit more as 3 cups are suppose to be standard 8oz cups, but you really don't get that when you brew anyway as you need a little room near the brim for stirring in your grinds so lets say 2oz less - so lets say 22oz. Now I have a 16oz cup but after brewing I have room for another 4oz in my cup which I fill with hot water after, so the math doesn't add up - 12oz on the brew not the expected 22oz. When I first decided to purchase it I wanted to cut down but not this much. This item is too small, unless they were measuring by using Japanese standard cups of 6oz+ but then I should still have 18oz - not so. Long story short this is not a true 3 cup coffee press. I should have opted to get the 6 cup model, then I would have had what I wanted. But I did have to try it out. As a for being a good product - it definitely is so I gave it a 5 star rating, but it did not fit my need in the long run. I won't send it back, I just have to brew it again if I want more. Good for traveling though, not for every day if you drink more than two cups a day - standard coffee cups that is.
