Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
My wife and I have a long history of disagreements about coffee grinders and the quality of the subsequent cup of coffee. I don't like the burnt taste of coffee that we have had with many electric blade (slash `n burn) grinders. She grew up in Italy so the smell of coffee is important to her and she prefers fresh ground for the brew. I've wanted a burr grinder for years because they make superior coffee. This is my 5th. I've tried to buy the highest quality grinders but we still disagree. You see, my wife makes the coffee in the morning. She always gets up earlier so she gets stuck using my grinders.
We tried our first electric "burr" grinder that I found at Costco years ago. I hated the coffee. It still tasted burnt. So I bought her a beautiful German ceramic wall hanging burr grinder. It took two hundred cranking turns for a pot. She gave it away that Christmas, and warned me not to pull that again. But I persisted. I bought another beautiful German Zassenhaus tabletop grinder and adjusted it myself. She hated it. The gear was too tight and she felt that she was fighting with it to keep it on the table while grinding. We kept trying to adjust it but just couldn't get the right torque. She's smaller than I am. What felt good to me was a pain for her and I wasn't about to get up to make coffee for her. . She said she was ready to have a heart attack in the morning BEFORE her cup of coffee.
She found a good French hand grinder with Peugeot gears at an antique store. She liked it; it worked perfectly for her. It made good coffee. I tried adjusting it. She about killed me. She couldn't turn it again. We kept making small adjustments to get it so she can turn it easily but sometimes it doesn't catch the beans and swings around a couple of times before it catches. This has been our trusted burr grinder for a good while now. She says its good exercise and doesn't mind it too much but it isn't her favorite thing to do as soon as she wakes. We have been moving between the two tabletop hand grinders depending on the fineness of grind we want. This one has full adjustable settings. It will take some time to gauge durability. But so far, the taste is superior for this price point.
But why leave well enough alone? So here I go again. I found this electric burr grinder from Bodum. We both like Bodum. The Bodum Bistro has a conical burr grinder which is what you want because the beans fall down into and out the revolving mechanism and are not smashed which can cause burning. Oily and flavored beans also are easily ground. We had a Bodum coffee maker when we were first married and we both loved the coffee. But it had to be attended. If you like ceremonies, that's great. When you have kids you throw out the ceremonies. So here was an electric Burr grinder from Bodum. I showed it to her.
She likes it. She likes the way it feels. It's quiet and doesn't vibrate too much for a morning routine. Its adjustable making grinds easily between espresso for me and cappuccino for her and drip for both of us. The grind SMELLS right. It's easy to use. The coffee tastes right. In short, it is the best electric grinder to our mind and we are both happy. I can move the dials and she thinks that's cute (It's got a 2 year guarantee). Hey, I'm cute again. Well worth the money.
Description of Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder, RedAsk any coffee connoisseur and they'll tell you that in order for coffee beans to develop their full flavor profile, they must be ground right before coming in contact with hot water. This is where the bistro electric burr coffee grinder comes in and becomes part of the coffee making ritual. The Bistro is continuously adjustable - twisting the upper bean container determines how finely ground the beans will be. With over 14 settings from coarse to fine, you can deliver the ideal grind for any brewing method. But there's more to it than that. Most coffee grinders use plastic containers to receive the ground coffee but plastic and ground coffee don't go together well. The powder gets statically charged and spills all over the place. The new Bistro comes with a borosilicate glass container to catch the grounds. The glass catcher is inherently static-free, reducing the amount of overall static and "jumping" coffee grounds. This and the tight silicone/nylon lid make for an excellent, no-spill coffee grinder. The borosilicate glass container comes with a silicone band to make it slip-proof, an especially important feature when touched with wet hands. The Bistro is made from borosilicate glass, steel, plastic, rubber and silicone and comes in black, orange, red, green, and white.
