Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Assam 51-Ounce Tea PressCustomer Review: Those Brits Just Rock When It Comes To Tea Prep! Summary: 5 Stars
I just ordered and received this 6 cup Bodum Assam tea press and I LOVE IT! It is my very favorite Amazon purchase thus far!It used to be such a pain to fill a little stainless steel strainer tea ball to make loose tea, nevermind the pain in the 'tocks in regards to clean up involved but THIS TEA PRESS is great, easy to clean, and makes a nice cup of tea. I can usually down the whole pot by myself without the tea loosing heat. I don't like to drink my tea BOILING hot either... I highly recommend this tea press. Another thing I love about it is that it is clear glass and you can see just how strong & dark your tea is steeping. If you care to have your tea stay BOILING HOT, Bodum also makes a little candle tea warmer to sit your tea press on, item #B0000U6PUE that you add a tea light to. VERY QUAINT! Also, as an aside... DO NOT WASH this tea press. Just rinse with hot tap water. The stains on the plastic insert and the glass make tea taste better. Don't believe a YANK? Ask ANY BRIT!!!
Customer Review: Easy to use, makes a great cup of tea, dishwasher clean up Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these in the personal and large size a few years ago. It is very easy to use. Scoop loose tea in the plastic bucket. Pour in boiling water. Put the lid back on. When the tea is the right color, push the plunger connected to the lid. The tea becomes compressed below the holes in the plastic bucket stopping the brewing process. When done, I rinse the loose tea into the garbage disposal, then put the pot, lid and bucket into the dishwasher where it comes out unstained and ready to use. Its great. Two small downsides. On the smaller model, you have to hold the lid onto the pot when pouring from a really full pot. It may leak a little otherwise. I don't have this problem with the larger model. The other thing is if you use a tea with a very large leaf, like some of the green teas, it takes the water some time to drain through the holes in the bucket, possibly two or three fills before the pot is full. But that's not really a big deal in my book.
Customer Review: Nice modern look but difficult to clean after using Summary: 1 Stars
I really like the appearance of this Bodum teapot, and the ability to see the brewing in progress.
That's a plus when using loose tea, but I found that the little leaves got caught in the holes of the steeping insert. Removing them took quite a bit of extra time and attention to detail. Plunging or not plunging made no difference to the problem as the leaves seem to get stuck during the steeping process as the water slowly circulates.
I am surprised I am the only one to have mentioned this drawback to date, but perhaps others are not using bulk leaf teas. I suppose using tea bags will solve the problem.
This item is now retired from daily use and will be sure to be offered for a dollar at my Spring yard sale. In the end, I found that a Chatsford teapot with plastic mesh filter insert is the best on the market. Finding a Chatsford requires the patience of a Sherlock Holmes. I do wish Amazon would carry them.
Customer Review: Tea lover's delight Summary: 5 Stars
It's taken a while for Bodum to perfect this teapot. I first bought one several years ago and found it wonderful to use, but with one major flaw: it was very easy to implode the pot when pulling out the plunger for cleaning. I went through two teapots in this way, but kept buying replacements because it's so good in every other way.
Bodum has now altered the design slightly, and the new pot avoids the implosion problem.
So, what's so good about it?
* It pours beautifully.
* Because it's a press, you can stop the tea from brewing past a chosen strength.
* The press acts as a strainer, too, so your tea is leaf-free.
If you use very fine leafed tea, you'll need to fill it slowly as the basket strains the tea as you pour; with big-leafed teas (such as Twinings Earl Grey) the process is appreciably faster.
Customer Review: Teapress OK but perfectible Summary: 3 Stars
Just got my 1 litre teapress. Did not come with a pad like all Bodum coffee presses; that's disappointing, and sorely missed. I don't find the user-friendliness quite optimal... The press is okay, sort of, but I would just as well like to have the option of another cover to go and serve the tea without that whole column apparatus flip-flopping around the pot's opening, into which the tea press does not fit snugly. Cleaning it is also somewhat of a clumsy affair. I have used loose herbal concoctions and not had the press's holes clog up so far, as a previous reviewer alluded to, but I'll be trying finely cut Russian Kousmichoff tea soon, and will keep my fingers crossed. Finally, while the coffee presses have metal filters and spring-loaded O-rings, the tea press has a silicone O-ring seal and I have my doubts as to its longevity. Voilà! Bonne chance...
