Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Assam 4-Cup Tea Press Teapot

Customer Review: Functional, but nothing special
Summary: 3 Stars

Regarding size, a cup is an 8oz cup. I don't have a problem with that (8oz. is a cup) but apparently some other people did, so there you have it. The device is functional. It is not attractive or elegant or ingenious; stick a cheap plastic basket in a cheap coffeepot and there you go. Because of the design, it really will only steep properly if you make 3-4 cups. A 2 cup pyrex measuring cup in the microwave is just barely large enough to work with this, so if you are nuking your water, make sure you have a suitable vessel. Loses heat rapidly, and states not for use on stovetop. Holes allow loose tea through, but not in egregious amounts. Only possible nicety is that the strainer is very easy to clean - just dump and rinse. Of use for serving other people (though in that case I would probably suggest looking for something a little nicer, larger or more insulated. If serving yourself only, I would recommend a teastick or ball and brewing each cup or consider an insulated press.

Edit: I still am not impressed with this device, but I have found a solution to the poor thermal qualities. I am absolutely tickled with the performance of my Nissan Thermos FBB1000 34-Ounce Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Briefcase Bottle. It may be a bit gauche for company (I guess you would look at an air pot then), but I can brew up a full four cups in the bodum, dump it in the Nissan, and sip steaming hot tea for the entire evening. I sip out of the Bodum Canteen Double Wall Shot/Espresso Glasses .. which really are not terribly good keeping the tea warm, but the perfect size when combined with a ready source of hot refills.

Customer Review: Great tea press!
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this pot as a gift from a friend of mine about a year and a half ago and after almost daily use over that time, I have no complaints whatsoever about this pot. It brews an excellent cup of tea and in whatever strength you desire - just keep an eye on the colour and press when done. I usually pump the press a few times while steeping to encourage water circulation. This is NOT a good pot for preparing tea that is as finely cut as the tea you see in bagged tea; I tend to drink only loose leaf teas and I buy all my teas from Stash Tea Company.

Most of the time I indulge in their fantastic Earl Green or Dragonwell teas, but I will also occasionally make their black peach tea, which is phenomenal. Despite the strainer being made of plastic, none of the teas - two of which are very distinctly flavoured - have "flavour-stained" the basket. My peach doesnt taste like bergamot from the Earl Green; my Earl Green doesnt taste like peaches. The high-grade Dragonwell does not lose its delicate flavour or have extra flavour added to it from the other two. I make all my tea in the same pot.

The basket does stain - I would expect this - but in my experience does not retain even strong flavours as long as you keep it clean and wash it between uses. It would have been very nice to have a high-quality mesh basket instead, but the plastic does very well.

I would recommend this pot to any tea aficionado, and will definitely buy it again once this pot wears out or breaks. It's a great little teapot!

I drink large mugs and get roughly three servings from this pot.

Customer Review: The SS infuser works much better
Summary: 4 Stars

This is our third Bodum teapot (press) the first two being broken in moments of carelessness. They are made of glass so are delicate. My wife an I drink a lot of tea, especially first thing each morning. These Bodums beat any of our previous teapots. The only gripe we have wih the 34 oz version we recently bought from Amazon is that it came with a plastic infuser. Our previous Bodum was the larger 6 cup version which did come with the SS infuser, but which is too big to fit the new Bodum. The gripe is that the plastic infuser requires a very slow pour from the kettle as there is a 50:50 split between holes and plastic around the holes, while the SS version is more like a 90:10 split so much less back pressure. Amazon would have to increase their price by probably $15 to replace the plastic infuser with a SS one. I would willingly pay the extra in order for this 4 cup Bodum to come with a SS infuser. We get by with this 4 cupper by (slowly) refilling it after pouring the first 2 cups.Bodum Assam 4-Cup Tea Press Teapot

Customer Review: Great teapot!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this teapot for a few weeks now, and I use it every day. The glass pot is easy to clean, and the strainer has enough holes that I can pour the water in without waiting for it to filter out. The plunger feature is nice because it keeps the tea from over-steeping without having to make a mess by removing the strainer.
The plastic strainer has small enough holes to filter out almost everything, even rooibos. Unfortunately, being clear plastic, it becomes instantly stained by the tea. That's not terribly attractive, but any tea drinker will understand that it's not "dirty." That's the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. I was concerned that the strainer might leave a plastic taste in the tea, but this is not the case.
The size is wonderful. Tiny teapots and I don't get along well. They're more difficult to clean, and they make serving more than two people at a time somewhat difficult.
I would definitely recommend this to others.

Customer Review: A great way to brew tea!
Summary: 5 Stars

I must have made tea 10 times in the last two days, just to get to use this teapot!

I received it is a birthday gift and instantly fell in love. It looks amazing, with or without tea, and while that's hardly what matters most, it's certainly a nice addition. More importantly, it's very helpful to be able to see the tea as it brews, and I'm thrilled at not having to use a tea infuser.

Instead of emptying the infuser and throwing out the leaves, you can just seal them off (very easily!), and when you're ready to make more tea, you can just uncover them and pour in more water. And if you're in a hurry, you can even brew the tea faster by pushing the plunger up and down.

The pot seems very solid, and while I wouldn't drop it on the floor, I don't worry about breathing on it or putting it in a stack of dishes to dry. I really don't see anything not to love about this tea press!
