Customer Review: Space saver, boils quickly, but some fit and finish issues

I bought my first Ibis about fifteen years ago, using a gift certificate from Crate and Barrel. The elliptical design saves counter space: orient it perpendicular or parallel to your counter, depending on space needs. Boiling is reasonably fast, though I have a newer Tefal Vitesse, the entire bottom of which is heated (rather than just a heating coil at the bottom, as the Ibis has) for faster heating through greater heating element contact. The Tefal boils in nearly half the time.
Other reviewers have touched on the design's weakness: instead of a round base with a center electrical contact, the elliptical base requires that one align it just so, so as to seat the socket of the bottom of the kettle on top of the electrical contact at the front of the base. If you don't seat it properly, it won't heat.
About two years ago, my original unit began to have seating issues and became very temperamental (wouldn't heat unless seating was perfect), so I bought a second unit, though at a discounted Amazon price of $29 at the time. Bear in mind, the kettle was over ten years old by then. The first unit was I think $35 at Crate and Barrel, but was covered by a gift certificate. The second unit now has two years of service and works fine. $29 was not a bad price point for a full sized unit such as this. But at $40, I would look elsewhere for alternatives, such as Tefal, Braun, Russell Hobbs, etc.
The Ibis is a basic unit with basic performance with innovative styling, but not worth $40 with today's competition (at $30, worth the money perhaps given the lack of competition at that price point). Some newer competing models (e.g. Tefal) have a temperature control, so that if you need water at say 180 F (85-90 C) for tea, you can set the thermostat lower than for full boil, which saves energy and heats your hot water in less tea. I have a Tefal in the office, used mainly for tea, and it's amazingly fast when set for 180 F. The Ibis has a traditional on-off switch. You can cut off the power with the switch when you hear the "first boil" if you want less than boiling water for tea or hot chocolate.
