Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum 5410-03USA Mini Ibis Electric Water Kettle, WhiteCustomer Review: Great little kettle Summary: 5 Stars
I'm rather surprised by some of the reviews that suggest these little things don't last. I've had one for going on ten years now and have never had any problems with it. I've had to descale it a few times depending on the type of water I used but that is pretty typical for most of these kettles. I also own a t-fal that is at least five years old. It is larger, not quite as cute but easier to clean as the heating element hidden under a plate so instead of boiling diluted vinegar I can sometimes just wipe it clean. The heating element on the mini ibis is exposed (think thin coiled metal pipes hovering over the bottom).
I bought it back when I was a starving grad. student and it was my only kettle for several years of serious use. Eventually I bought a stove top model because I moved to an apartment that didn't even have counter space for this little thing and this electric kettle became our office kettle (used by 6-7 students). It has followed me from apartment to apartment and from city to city. Now that I'm finally settled, we lost it in our last move and I am now looking for a new one to replace it.
The only issue I've had with mine is that over time the heat did slowly warp the lid a little bit so that steam escaped during it's last few years of service and I had to be careful when picking it up (but we're talking over five years old here) and I can imagine that the latch used to lock the lid down would be difficult for arthritic hands to manipulate (it's very small).
Otherwise this has been a very handy, very reliable, very compact kettle. I suppose it's possible that the quality has gone down since I purchased mine but, if so, I'll repost a new review after I get my replacement.

Its modern Scandinavian design makes it an attractive office companion for boiling water to make tea or coffee. And, with its reasonable price, this kettle travels well to college to make instant noodles in a dorm room. Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic with a copper-sheathed, nickel-plated heating element, the Mini Ibis holds a maximum of 27 fluid ounces of water (about 3-1/2-cups). It must be filled to a minimum of 7 fluid ounces--just enough to cover the heating element--to operate. Plugging the unit in and flipping up the switch below the kettle's handle turns on the power. The heating process is rapid and quiet: it takes only 4 minutes to boil 27 ounces of water and the sound is almost imperceptible. For safety purposes, the Ibis automatically shuts off after boiling and has a locking lid to prevent spilling and a frosted handle for a secure grip. --Cristina Vaamonde
