Customer Review: Don't buy if you need it for toasting or cooking.

After owning 4 B&D under the counter toasters over the years I purchased this one for a vacation property. Setting aside the fact that I didn't need it to mount under the counter (and thankfully didn't face the under counter installation difficulties expressed by other reviewers) -- I can only tell you to avoid this product if you have liked B&D toasters in the past. The one we have at our town home has worked perfectly for 15 years and counting. We love it and assumed that the new ones would only be better.
Unlike my prior unit, the controls for this one were designed by someone who neither uses toaster ovens nor as best as we can tell any sort of oven. There is one element above and one below the wire rack. The unit does NOT disperse the heat so you get items burned or un-toasted in the middle and not toasted on the edges or burned in the middle! It heats unevenly and inconsistently at the same temperature and time settings. Why couldn't they leave well enough alone?
Unlike my prior unit, this one does not come with a tray and only has a rack. This makes for many more crumbs down in the bottom of the unit and therefore much more cleaning hassle. And good luck making an open-faced toasted sandwich where you don't WANT it toasted on the bottom. This just can't do that. Also, when we used our tray from the old unit, it doesn't fit well.
It is irritating that the machine does not cut off when the door is opened. I believe this is also a burn-hazard -- especially for the elderly or small children -- so if you want one that a child could make something in, seriously rethink this product.
The unit can not be precisely set to toast the exact time (the way it worked before with the lever that operated the toaster for the exact, same time EVERY time and turned off) and the timer 'turning' knob is awful. You have to turn it and then turn it backwards. The sensation is like winding up a toy and then forcing the winding stem backwards to unwind it. It feels like you're breaking it and just can't be a sensible design. Before, all you did was set a knob to the desired toast level from light to dark and then press the timer lever down. When the machine turned off (after toasting for the exact same amount of time each and every time... reliably) you were done. Now, you can't tell exactly how long you've set it for and I've not made a decent piece of toast in three weeks, including when I sat there and stared at it.
We're giving up and throwing it out. It's 'functioning', but is such a piece of junk that I am not even going to give it away to our local shelter as I wouldn't wish it on an enemy. It ruins food and does not cook evenly. Furthermore. My husband, trying to wait for the third cycle of trying to toast something -- set a wooden cutting board on top of the machine and that resulted in a permanently discolored area of the metal. I believe this is not just a defective design, I think it's potentially dangerous.
I often recommend products but this isn't one of them. Avoid. We don't know what we'll get next but it surely isn't going to be another Black and Decker product. What a shame to take a great product and totally mess it up to where it can't perform even a basic function.
Shame on Black & Decker. The company made a time capsule in 1985 that's not to be opened until 2085. Perhaps that contains the plans for the original toaster oven? Hate to have to wait until then to find a decent machine.
