Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker TCM830 10-Cup Thermal Stainless-Steel CoffeemakerCustomer Review: Rather well-done coffee maker Summary: 4 Stars
This unit replaced a similar Cuisinart unit which had failed. We were looking for a thermal carafe and 10-cup capacity. Black and Decker seems to have gotten most things right with this unit, such as the removable reservoir and a straightforward design.
Since I grind my own coffee, I found the #4 Mellita-style filters took some getting used to (i.e., getting the grounds into the filter without spillage). Also, the valves on the bottom of the filter bail and the top of the carafe don't slide across each other easily, so some fiddling was necessary until we got used to them.
Perhaps most important (and rarely mentioned in these reviews) is that we chose Black & Decker for its reputation for longevity; When we chose the TCM830, we had in mind an older B&D coffee maker (non-thermal-carafe) from 10 years ago which still works like it did out of the box.
Customer Review: I LOVE THIS COFFEEMAKER Summary: 5 Stars
I have been totally pleased with this coffeemaker since I purchased it 8 months ago. It is the best design ever. Easy to clean with the removable water reservoir, you can put it in the dishwasher. One of the best things about it is the brewing time is super fast!. When I want coffee in the morning I don't want to wait long at all and it is ready before you know it.
This unit is perfect for my style of coffee drinking, I only drink coffee first thing in the morning therefore it is hot and just right for drinking. I never liked having coffee sitting on the heating element and burning making the taste of the coffee awful and the smell in my house.
If this unit ever wears out I hope this model is still available for purchase because I love it and would definitely buy it again. I highly recommend this unit.
Customer Review: Does the job... Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this after using a drip coffee maker for many years. My father has a Capresso thermal coffee maker. I was very impressed with the Capresso, but I didn't want to spend $180. So I found this and I can see why it's so much cheaper. It's made mostly of plastic and feels quite cheap... It's light and slides around on the table I have it on. On the plus side the carafe is nice. It feels really solid, and keeps the coffee hot for a long time. The coffee by comparison is 10 times better than my old drip coffee maker, but I think any thermal coffee maker will make better coffee due to the fact that a heat plate turns the coffee acidic. The bottom line is that it works great, but feels cheap. If you have $180 to spare I highly recommend the Capresso MT500. If not this will do, but you get what you pay for...
Customer Review: My favorite coffee maker Summary: 5 Stars
The two big benefits of this product are the nice appearance and the safety/energy savings. The idea of an electric heating element (keeping the coffee warm) on my plastic counter top is not the best. So the whole "thermal carafe" idea appeals to me. I don't have to worry...is the heating element set for one hour or five hours? It is also the best looking coffee maker I have ever owned. On the downside, you can't see how much coffee is left in the carafe so you had better plan your quantity requirements carefully. And as others have pointed out, the carafe lid takes some getting used to. I recommend that after you brew the coffee you remove the basket OR the carafe so the carafe will remained sealed. With both in the brewing position you will lose the insulation properties of the carafe.
Customer Review: Liked my old Black & Decker better! Summary: 4 Stars
My old Black & Decker had a thermal caraffe with a glass liner. Wow, the coffee stayed hot for over 24 hours. Unfortunately, the glass liner broke, so I tried this coffee maker. This thermal caraffe is stainless steel and does not begin to do as good of a job at keeping coffee hot. Coffee will be noticeably cooler in 1-2 hours. However, the advantage is that there is no glass liner to break. The swing out basket is a little flimsy and awarkward, and the caraffe does not slide smoothly into place when placing under filter. The coffee pours very slowly, almost at a dribble. I do like the removeable reservoir. This coffee maker is attractive to look at and it takes less counter space than my old one. Overall, this coffeemaker is acceptable, but not as good as the old one.
