Since there's really no competing product for the space saver line, if you're looking for something like this you have only one reasonable choice: the iB&D SDC 850. We've recently redone our kitchen in stainless/black and wanted to regain some counter space. As daily coffee drinkers (albeit in small quantities) we needed a new coffee maker and were unwilling to use the ridiculous "pod" systems that generate plastic waste with each pot (and require you to use preground beans).
After reading reviews here we anticipated a troublesome install. That was not the case. The entire installation took about five minutes and we didn't even open the instructions; the process is intuitive and there are only a handful of parts involved. I did not use the provided template-- it's not necessary, since the top of the unit (the mounting bracket) is removable you can simply hold it up in place, mark the holes, and drill. Once the bracket is mounted the unit simply slides into place. Very simple, and much easier than the Sony under-counter radio we have on the other side of the kitchen.
Overall performance is OK. I would prefer a conical filter to a flat one; I think they brew better. Filling the detachable reservoir is easy, the only problem is determining how much water to put in, which requires either practice or estimation followed by setting it down and checking the level indicator repeatedly. Brewing is quick and coffee is great (we start with good, whole bean coffee).
PROS: quick and easy installation, space saving design, unheated carafe (no worries about leaving it on), timer works well, thermal carafe looks pretty good and keeps warm for an hour or so. Very bright blue light serves as a night light for entire kitchen (may be a con for some). Low price compared to similar options. Works well.
CONS: Condensed steam builds up around brew basket, so every time you remove it water drips on the counter below. Flat bottom filter basket not ideal for brewing (I prefer conical). Overly shiny stainless finish doesn't match my other appliances. Push-button valve on carafe works but I fear it may not work forever; seems like a weak point in design. Clock settings are change with one button, so it's easy to bump and mess up the clock.
Recommended if you are looking for something to get the coffee maker off the counter. I am baffled by the stories here of hours-long installations. We actually did ours twice (decided to move it a few inches after the first time) and both installations took less than ten minutes total. Throw away the template and just use the detachable mounting bracket (remove with a screwdriver) as the template for drilling. If you can operate a hand drill you should have no problems installing this unit.
We've had ours for about three months now and it still works and looks like new.
