Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker RC426 Rice Cooker, White

Customer Review: Solid, inexpensive rice cooker that has gone the distance
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this rice cooker in January 2007 for about $25 and have been using it two or three times a week ever since. For my simple purposes, it works well and reliably without ever burning any rice. The fact that a cheap rice cooker like this is still working three years after I bought it is a testament to its quality.

I remember the cooker doing well with white rice, though since 2008 I eat and cook only brown rice. This rice cooker takes about 45 minutes to cook two cups of dry brown rice (about 20 minutes for one cup of dry brown rice). This isn't super-fast, but I find that the end result is worth the wait: smooth, dry and clean kernels with no stickiness or wetness.

The design has some minor flaws, though. First, the lid gets covered in gunky rice residue during the cooking phase; this residue then solidifies if left in the open air. It's not hard to clean, but it does mean that the lid AND the bowl need to be washed after each use.

Second, the hole in the lid that allows for steam to vent, also tends to sputter water slightly, which creates a damp and wet environment in the immediate area around the rice cooker. It's not a huge amount of water/moisture, but I keep the cooker away from electronics and electrical outlets just to be on the safe side.

Third, while the cooker doesn't ever burn the rice at the bottom, it does create a slightly tough, thin, starchy connected layer at the bottom. This isn't a big deal as once you stir the rice, the starchy layer becomes intermixed with the rest of the rice, and you don't notice it when you eat. Still, it also means I've never had a perfect pot of rice produced by this particular cooker.

All that said, I am satisfied with this rice cooker's performance, reliability and value for the 3 years that I've owned it.
