Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker JW200 Lids Off Jar Opener, WhiteCustomer Review: Much-Needed Gadget Summary: 5 Stars
I bought one of these devices for my wife and one for my mother and both enjoy them very much. It may sound odd, but as folks get older a simple task such as opening a jar can be quite a challenge, especially for people living alone. The same is true for people of all ages who suffer from arthritis or other problems that restrict hand strength. This product is ideal for such people. We found it to work exactly as advertised. It was simple to use, required almost no effort and opened even the most difficult-to-open jars, large and small. No more banging, prying or using hot water. My 89-year-old mother had no trouble using it with only minimal explanation. And now my daughter-in-law wants to buy two more--one for her mom and one for herself. It remains to be seen if this product will survive the test of time, but so far it seems to work fine.
Customer Review: If you NEED it, it is okay. Summary: 3 Stars
I got this because of increasing problems with carpal tunnel. When it is bad the twisting motion is completely impossible for me, and even when things are good, it is better to avoid motions that cause trouble for me.
This will open most of the jars I need opened. It takes a long time to get it open. It is noisy. It is clunky to use. Sometimes it is difficult to get it into position to start opening the jar, and with some disabilities I imagine it would be impossible.
If this had worked as well as I had hoped, I would have bought some as gifts for my elderly relatives, but I think it would cause them more trouble than it was worth.
If you really need it, like I do, go ahead, but if you are just a gadget hound this will end up on the trash pile. It is not cool or impressive.
Customer Review: This thing actually works! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit I was a little skeptical, but I've been very impressed so far with this jar opener. I have osteoarthritis in both hands, and opening jars has gotten more and more difficult as time goes on. I have strong hands from decades of piano playing, but it has been getting more and more painful to do little things (opening jars, writing, etc.). Enter this Black & Decker jar opener. It has opened every jar I've tried so far: pickles, jam, salsa, cocktail sauce, freeze-dried nuts, and more. It has a fairly hefty "footprint," so I keep mine in the pantry until I need it. It sets up in 5 seconds, so that's not a huge deal.
I chose the white color to match my kitchen, and it's reasonably attractive, although a little "clunky." Still, it WORKS, and that's more important to me than how it looks.
Customer Review: Does not handle tough jobs well Summary: 2 Stars
Once in a while, we end up purchasing a jar that is just impossible to open. I thought a jar opener would help me in such situations and that is why I purchased this product. When I tried to open two of the toughest jars (which I could not open with my hands), the product failed to open them. We eventually opened both jars by heating the lids and using special jar opener pads. The product worked fine with the easy-to-open jars.
I think this is a good product for people who have problems opening any sort of jars - including easy-to-open ones. It did not work for me. If jar openers had objective measures for their opening ability (example: "upto 25 torques of force"), I could have performed a more objective review.
Customer Review: Makes a GREAT gift!!! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this a few months ago for my grandmother on her birthday. SHE LOVED IT! She suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and has to wait when someone else is around to open jars for her. Now she can eat what ever she wants whenever. When we set it up in her kitchen and read over the manual we did a few trials. It EVEN opened a jar of HONEY that none of us could ever open (being the honey seeped between the lid and jar and sealed it shut like glue). At the price of $25 dollars is an excellent deal. I give it 4 out of 5 only becuase she has not had any problems yet it is still considered "NEW" (I try not to rely on electrical gadgets life span or having mechanical issues). If it ever stops working I will update!!!
