Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerCustomer Review: Just like Mom used to make. Summary: 5 Stars
Yep,If you had one of these grills in the past, then you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Sadly after 30 years in service, my old unit died and was sent to appliance heaven. Since then I've been on a quest to find a replacement for it in ALL my local malls. Let me tell ya folks, I wasted a LOT OF TIME and GAS when I SHOULD HAVE searched right here on Amazon.com for it. In my search to find this grill, I've seen every make and model, and NONE of them impressed me like this unit. It's built to withstand the rigorous of time and, it brings back all those old childhood memories of Sunday morning, when the smell of waffles wafted through the hallways. Yep, this grill makes the best waffles you'd ever want!!! TRUST, I've tried plenty of other griddles but, they just don't compare. Now, if ONLY I could find that syrup that we used to use. I think it was called "Tea Garden Drips"? If you know where I can find this product now, then by all means, send me an email and make my Sunday mornings complete once again. Great Griddle!!......Great Price!! Ciao!!!
Customer Review: Super Waffle Maker Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this B&D model for over 20 years now. It gets pretty heavy use too, at least once a weekend because we're big waffle fans. Add pecans or walnuts or blueberries. It's very reliable and waffles won't stick if you spray the top and bottom teflon with Pam or something similar (just like Waffle House). We don't clean it very much between uses so it stays seasoned like a cast iron griddle, that's the secret. If you put the removable griddles in dishwasher, you have to season the teflon again with lots of Pam. Its almost all made of metal so be careful not to let plastic wrap or your hand touch it when hot. It retains the heat very well since it's heavy. We've served up to 2 dozen waffles during family visits. I'd guess we've made 6000 to 7000 waffles over the last twenty years. Been to friends and relatives houses on vacations and holidays and nothing can beat this maker. Krusteaz Waffle Mix makes the best batter (costs a little more but well worth it). Just remember to spray with oil between batches or it's difficult to remove quickly.
Customer Review: Very Good Maker Summary: 4 Stars
Pros: excellent waffles from day one, design is attractive, for some the grilling function might be a a nice feature, and the warning light and heat control work well, very excellent price for what you get.
Cons: a little slow to heat up - so for me the grlling function takes too long to heat up - and I'd rather just use a frying pan for my grilled cheese sandwiches, the non-stick coating seems a bit thin with some little bare metal spots showing through at some contact points at the hinge assemblies - although this is not affecting the actual cooking surface, and the heat control seems a little loose - although it seems to work fine, and the clip design holding the plates could be a little better / stronger.
Conclusion: this waffle iron does very well what it's designed to do with perfect waffles every time so far straight out of the box, for the price and convenience of buying it with free shipping at Amazon it's a hard deal to beat. I would definitely recommend it to a friend and in fact offered to have one sent to my sister and parents.
Customer Review: Great for waffles or pancakes, but not a long life Summary: 3 Stars
I bought one of these about 5 years ago and used it at least once a week. It recently died on me and when I looked around, I ended up purchasing exactly the same product because I really couldn't find anything similar. It works great for waffles and doing one small waffle at a time is not efficient enough for a family- so this can feed at least 2 people at a time as they're cooking. Flipping the unit open you can use it as a griddle and cook 2 large pancakes at a time. It works very effectively and dependably. The top does get a little hotter than the bottom, so I always pour the first pancake on the bottom side and remove the pancake from the top side first. Clean-up is simple and I like the versatility of griddle or waffle-baker.
The only downside- I had hoped it would last longer than 5 years, but I figured that was a reasonable enough length of time to purchase another.
Update 1/8/09 - after less than 4 years use, my second unit died on me. That's just not good enough for me and I won't be buying another one.
Customer Review: View the uneven heating Summary: 4 Stars
I'm planning to purchase two of these irons. One for us and one for my son who also remembers the one handed down from my parents that looks just like this one. I think ours was a "GE" and maybe they sold the rights to B&D. The reviews mention flimsy -- what isn't today?
Anyway, the customer image of the cooked waffle shows a shortcoming that may be difficult to overcome. If you look at the brownness of the cooked waffle you will notice a ring right around the waffle that is darker. That indicates the heat in that area was higher than in the rest of the plate.
My suggestion would be to preheat the iron longer and with the lid closed. This will allow the entire metal plate to become more uniform and hopefully produce a more even color and "doneness" to the product. Since a "next" waffle will be started after the instant one has cooked long enough to drive off the moisture it should also have allowed the plates to get back to a fairly uniform temperature but a short empty reheat might help.
