Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker

Customer Review: Wonderful Waffle Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I have been married for over 30 years and last year the waffle maker that we had received as a wedding gift gave up the ghost! It was a Black and Decker that made 4 small, thin, waffles. We loved it because it was easy to clean, and made waffles that we could freeze, take out of the freezer and pop into the toaster for a quick waffle snack. Well, we looked all over trying to find the same waffle iron and could not find one, so we purchased a Belgian Waffle maker from Crate and Barrel. It was nice, but we did not care for the waffles. They were too thick and the waffle maker was not easy to clean, did not have the griddle feature that our old maker had, and the frozen waffles were too thick for our toaster. After a year of using the Belgian maker, my husband got on the internet and searched for a waffle maker like the one that we had previously. Imagine our delight when he found the exact same item! We ordered it on a Monday night and it was delivered on Wednesday! We love the waffle maker. It is just like the one that we had for 30 years. It is easy to clean, makes perfect waffles and has the griddle feature for grilled cheese. You can't go wrong with this waffle maker!

Customer Review: Exactly What We Wanted
Summary: 5 Stars

After our nearly 13 year old waffle baker finally gave out I hunted high and low for a regular "old fashioned" waffle baker. We settled on a Belgian waffle baker but despite the fact that we couldn't ever get them crispy enough for our taste, it only made one at a time and for our family of five, it just wasn't enough. Not to mention we enjoy doubling or even tripling the batches to toast up later in the week (it's a pain to store or toast Belgian waffles). So we gave a couple store-bought waffle bakers a try and they were awful, completely unable to make a decent waffle.
THIS machine had been in my Amazon shopping cart for over a year and I wish I hadn't waited so long to buy it! Totally worth the $50ish dollars that we paid for it! The waffles come out crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and with so little effort.
Clean up is a SNAP with the griddles being removable (it's recommended not to put in the dishwasher, but with bowls to wash from the batter, we {by we, I mean my husband!} just wash them up at the same time). Since it's arrival just a few weeks ago we've made several batches and it's been great! This one looks like it'll last for many years to come!

Customer Review: Great Waffle Iron!
Summary: 5 Stars

When my husband and I got married, I was determined to have a waffle iron like my dad (the designated pancake & waffle-maker in our house) used during my childhood. I couldn't find a waffle iron that made 4 decent-sized squares at one whack. All of the waffle irons we found were either 2-square irons or circle irons that made 4 small wedges. We bought one of the 2-square irons and used it for 7 years. Then, the non-stick on it stopped being non-stick, even when we brushed it with oil or sprayed it with non-stick spray. So, I got on Amazon, and (much to my surprise) I found this wonderful machine. It was almost exactly like the one my dad used to make waffles! It makes great waffles! I like that it has the griddle option on it too, but we haven't used it for that since we already have a griddle. I also like that the plates are dishwasher safe.

It does get HOT HOT HOT! The outside gets super hot! Only touch the black grips! Keep kids (and accident-prone adults) away from this while it is in use and until it cools down.

I highly recommend this waffle-maker, especially to anyone who, like myself, is nostalgic for old-school waffle makers. =)

Customer Review: Soft, Unevenly-Cooked Waffles
Summary: 1 Stars

Likes:

- Large waffles to serve more than one person at once
- Reversible grill/waffle plates
- Easy clean up
- Fairly economical

Dislikes:

- Waffles soft (even w/ a variety of different batters)
- Cooking is not even - back doesn't cook as quickly
- Takes too long to heat up (10 minutes)
- Outer surface of waffle maker gets extremely hot (water sizzles) A nearby wrapper of bread was drawn to the surface and instantly melted. Waffle maker is large, creating a large VERY HOT surface. Handle is small, so use caution to avoid burning yourself...and it does BURN.
- No indication waffle is done, except to be constantly watching for light to extinguish.
- Dial very flimsy, in fact entire maker is rather wiggly

After using this waffle maker several times, I cannot recommend it. The cons outweigh the pros. #1 reason is the quality of waffles. I can overlook some of the other dislikes, but when the waffle is not crisp (no matter whether oil was sprayed on, brushed on or applied w/ paper towel) with a variety of mixes/recipes, I'll be looking for another waffle iron.

Customer Review: Very Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

Perhaps Black and Decker made better quality waffle irons back in 2002, which were the dates on the reviews I went by when purchasing this item back in July of 2009. I waited to write a review of my own until we used the iron enough times to give a fair assessment. I agree with the person who stated they got five uses from it and then it began sticking. Same thing with us. The waffles started to stick to the plates after several uses and this morning, the waffles were stuck to the point where my husband couldn't even open it up to get them out without great difficulty. The waffles ripped apart and they wouldn't even come off the plates without first soaking them in water in the sink. Before the first use, we seasoned the plates just as instructed in the B&D manual and used vegetable oil every time we cooked the waffles. We did nothing different than we had when it worked fine, so it isn't anything WE did to cause these problems. I will not be buying a B&D product again. The only reason I gave this two stars instead of one is because the waffles themselves (when it worked) did taste really good. What a shame.
