Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker

Customer Review: Best waffle maker so far, and awesome price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I make protein waffles and freeze them for a quick breakfast. I wanted to find something big, quick, and easy to clean. I'm busy and I don't want to spend forever trying to clean an appliance.

This waffle maker is great for my needs!
PROS:
- You can remove the plates and soak them for easy cleaning
- It has two sides so you can do sandwiches as well
- The plates are non-stick coated so cleaning is even easier (but use something else or it WILL stick)
- It has an adjustable temp. knob
- Makes 4 average sized regular waffles (about 4 or 5 inches)
- Doesn't auto-lock so batter won't go over the sides everywhere if it's homemade with baking powder (they puff up and then fall back down)

CONS:
- The outside is HOT, so watch out if you have curious kids or children
- The non-stick plates collect "gunk" that's hard to remove completely from spraying non-stick spray on them.
- It doesn't open vertical at all so larger sandwiches tend to be pressed at an angle or the bread may slide if there's cheese on it (just turn every so often to help even it out)

Overall I'm really happy with my purchase. The only way it could be better was if it made MORE waffles at a time and didn't collect the goo from the cooking spray.

Customer Review: Does the job, and does it well
Summary: 5 Stars

This is what I was looking for in a waffle iron:
1) Cooks good waffles
2) Easy to clean
3) Fast

As for #1: waffles come out perfect, no problem. There's a light on the front that comes on, but I ignore that and just use a timer. Seven minutes, and they're perfectly brown.

#2, easy to clean, was my main problem with my last waffle iron. On my old one, you couldn't remove the plates. Inevitably, there would be small spills that would get in the tiny gaps between the plates and the body of the waffle iron, and it would be just about impossible to clean. With this one, the plates pop right out and can be easily washed. Not only that, this one has a better border around the edge of the plates, which means that it's less likely spills even get on to the body.

As for #3, the speed: the iron seems to heat up pretty quickly. No complaints.

I haven't used this as a grill at all, so I can't speak to that.

I don't really have many complaints. The metal body does get hot, but the plastic handles stay cool. It would be nice if there was a latch to keep the lids closed, for storage -- better yet if there was some way to wrap up the cord, as well.

Overall, highly recommended.

Customer Review: Missing Quality Control
Summary: 1 Stars

The first unit arrived with rusted handle rivets and blistered non-stick coating on the plates. The second unit arrived with rusted handle rivets again and scratched non-stick coating. When Presto made this exact-same unit many years ago, it contained a heating spiral underneath the coated cast-iron pates. The coating would wear off over the years, but the plates - being cast iron - would still be usable. This Black and Decker version comes with an electric stove burner in each half and a spring-loaded temperature controller that is physically presses against the bottom plate; instant scratch if there's cheap non-stick coating on the plates. Also, be aware that the aluminum plates, once they loose their non-stick coating, can no longer be just "brushed clean," as the directions say. Please look at aluminum baking sheets to gain an understanding how you will need to bake waffles in this unit and the overdoses of butter that will be required to keep waffles from sticking. I regret throwing the 15-year old Presto unit away instead of fixing it, because this "updated" unit lacks basic quality control and - being aluminum instead of cast-iron - will never be "conditioned." I'm still looking for a replacement unit.

Customer Review: bad design - don't buy this
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this waffle maker because I thought the versatility of it would be great in my small kitchen and B&D has a good reputation but this is not a good product and I think it is unsafe.

I used it only once and am returning it because:

1: the design - once you're done cooking the waffle and try to open it to pull out the waffle:

a: the area that I touched burned my thumb big time - it was a spot that looked touchable but was actually a protusion from the plates that I guess are supposed to be used, when cool, to lift the plates. I don't know what the purpose is, as they aren't marked in the instruction booklet. Nonetheless, they are very HOT and a week later, I am still suffering from the blister on my thumb.

b: the plates have clips to hold them in place, but they don't work well and the plates fall out of place. I tried repeatedly to see if I could clip them in so that this would not happen, but with ease, the unit basically falls apart.

2: the waffles are normal size - didn't taste great - chewy - maybe it was because it was the 1st use but still, I have no motivation now to keep this - bye, bye 3-in-1 waffle maker!! good riddance!

Customer Review: like the concept; not so much on performance
Summary: 2 Stars

Loved the idea of combining a waffle maker and a grill/griddle in one appliance. I'm trying to unclutter my kitchen, and keep only things that serve a multi-purpose or will get used all of the time. This item seemed like the solution. It was, briefly. But like some of the other reviewers I had problems with having to crank it up to high, and the waffles still not being browned. I had problems with my waffles sticking (yes, I tried oil, butter, cooking spray- none made a difference), so that when you opened the machine you had 1/2 a waffle on the top, 1/2 on the bottom. You then had to carefully peel both sides off and smoosh them back together to have a waffle. The final straw was when making pancakes on the grill, and the one side was so much hotter that they were burning, and the other side was taking double the time to cook. I had to keep switching the pancakes from side to side to try and even it out. And that was it!!! It was too late to return, and I wouldn't wish it on the good folks at Good Will, so I consigned it to our township recycling heap. If you want crispy waffles- try the Villa Ware waffle maker. It's excellent. If you want a grill/griddle, try the Cuisinart Griddler. It's excellent.
