Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerCustomer Review: I must have a bad one...it is terrible! Summary: 1 Stars
Based on the other reviews, I thought this would work for me, but it really is barely sufficient in doing either job. First off, the heat is very uneven from the front to the back. The front browns much more quickly than the back, leading to uneven sandwiches on the grill side, but worse yet, undercooked waffles on the waffle side! I use an old recipe for waffles that I have made for years, and I have NEVER tasted that recipe taste as badly as it did on this thing! Overdone on the outside edge of the front two, and underdone on the back two, to almost uncooked on the back edge. Besides this, it did not allow the waffle batter to rise, which made the waffles dense and chewy, and cooked what it did unevenly too! (overcooked was speckled) Nasty!
My advice is to keep looking! If you just want something that (sort of) makes a grilled cheese sandwich, this may work for you, though honestly a pan on the stove is quicker and more convenient in clean-up. But if you want something that really does the job it is advertised to do, this is not it, by any stretch of the imagination!
I give this a 1 star only because it turns on and heats, but will be the first thing I return to Amazon! Most times if something I buy doesn't work as well as I expect it to, I give it to Goodwill. But I would not do that to some unsuspecting person if they bought this thinking it would do the job for them!
Oh, and this is the SECOND disappointing Black and Decker product bought in a month! I think I see a trend here, and I will no longer consider anything made by Black and Decker.
Customer Review: Defective and dangerous Summary: 1 Stars
The design of the unit is flawed--the irons are held by two flimsy clips which can easily bend or break. Most of the unit is made of metal, and when heated because extremely hot if you touch anywhere outside its plastic parts.
This sounds obvious, but what is the dealbreaker are the iron plates themselves. Even though B&D claims they are nonstick and that they need to be primed with oil, they continuously stick after the first three waffles and several minutes of grilling. They do not prime. Repeatedly doing so simply makes the first batches extremely oily and inedible, and the following batches after that unremovable from the hot iron plates.
The dangerous part occurs as a result of these plates--because they stick, you may attempt to pull harder to open, but the plates will not budge and you will either A) touch the hot metal exterior, causing burns or B) the clips will give way and you will burn yourself either on the iron, open element, or exterior metal surface. You eat nothing that you put into the unit and then be forced to scrape wasted food off the "nonstick" hot iron plates.
I can't vouch for every unit, but the above sums up my experience with this model. I'm not prone to writing reviews, but I was so upset that I had spent $40 on an item that would soon prove to be unusable after right after the return policy (because you think that eventually the iron plates will be primed, and after a while you realise they'll never). As such, I strongly recommend purchasing another brand because the mediocre food results and the potential danger are not worth the costs.
Customer Review: The waffle iron that couldn't Summary: 1 Stars
This product has a lot of one and two-star reviews that all have the same complaints - non-stick isn't very effective, the plates are loose and drop out while making waffles (due to inadequate or poorly designed clips), uneven heat, and short lifespan.
I REALLY wanted to like this waffle iron (it looks just like the waffle iron we had when I was growing up) but in the brief period of time when it worked, I experienced each and every one of the above issues with it. After less than a year (and probably less than ten or so uses) it simply put itself out of its misery and stopped working altogether (in the middle of making breakfast, I should add). I contacted Black & Decker customer service and they were very good about replacing it - I paid 7.50 for shipping and got a new unit - but it's a mixed blessing. I'm tempering my expectations and bracing for another inevitable ruined breakfast.
The real tragedy here is that this waffle iron is otherwise made very well and looks and feels just like those old sturdy waffle irons of the past and for very little extra in quality parts, it probably could have been the one we're all hoping to find - the one that you plug in, put batter into and count on getting great waffles out of...and for many years to come. As it is, this thing mocks our nostalgia and is not much more than landfill fodder.
If you are considering buying this product I highly recommend you take another minute and browse through the one and two-star reviews and note the high percentage of units with similar issues.
Customer Review: DELICIOUS!! Summary: 5 Stars
My kids requested a waffle maker for Christmas. We got this one, as I had a similar one growing up. So far, we LOVE it. It is a hot appliance, but as someone else posted, I would trade the cool touch feature for the quality of this one ANY day. We had a cool touch one that only made 2 waffles at a time, and it ended up at Goodwill...blech. I have three kids, and to be able to make four at a time is a must. I used the recipe from my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, and the waffles are scrumptious. My kids are eating them up and have sworn never to touch an eggo again! I can make a double batch and have leftovers to freeze for the before-school breakfast rush. They re-heat wonderfully in the microwave.
I will probably never use the grill feature, as it's easier to use my bigger griddle for my family of five, but I love that I can pop the waffle plates out and wash them up quick without having to try to navigate the whole thing over the sink like mom did back in the day. Not sure how well the clips will hold, but with care, they should be fine.
I have not had one bit of problem with the waffles sticking, 1/2 tsp. of canola oil brused over the waffle maker before the first waffle, and they're good to go. DO NOT USE SPRAY OIL!
Seriously, if you are worried about the issues that others posted, stick to the drive-thru. Anyone who has success navigating normal cooking in the kitchen should be more than fine. This waffle maker rocks!
Customer Review: Found the perfect waffle iron after so much searching Summary: 5 Stars
I have searched for a long time for a good waffle maker: one that makes waffles that are traditional, not belgian. Belgian waffles have too deep of squares for me and are too thick to go in a normal toaster. This waffle maker finally makes normal sized waffles, the size of a piece of bread, with small holes.
It cooks perfectly every time...the waffles are evenly cooked and slide very easily off when you want to remove them. They look great and they taste excellent. It makes four waffles at a time, which was another requirement (I hate little wafflemakers...you can't feed a family on those). If you have leftovers you can toss them in the fridge and then later in a normal toaster, which makes them crisp and delicious again. I almost like them better the second time.
The construction is durable and attractive, not made of that plastic junk that you normally see in a wafflemaker. I can find no downside to it's construction, all smoothly operating and simple. It doesn't get dirty, but if it did it would be really simple to pull out the waffle surface and wash it off however you want.
I have no use for the flat side of this waffle iron, so I don't use it.
I have owned a number of waffle irons and I've never been happy with any of them until I got this one. I bought one for my mother, and will recommend it to anyone who is looking for traditional--not belgian--waffles and wants a precision machine to do it.
