Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerCustomer Review: Not the best quality... Summary: 3 Stars
My mother has had her B&D Wafflemaker for years and it's fantastic. She bought me this one as a gift, but I have to say the quality is not nearly as good as it used to be. The chrome is very thin and the plates don't always line up easily and lock snugly into place. I had to bend the clips in the front so they wouldn't touch each other and cause the plates to come loose. I don't agree with other reviewers that it doesn't get hot enough or bake waffles well. As long as you have a good recipe and keep them in long enough (until they stop steaming) then they will come out crisp and yummy. I don't recommend the receipe that comes with the unit- the batter is too thin. I have also used the griddle side for grilled cheese and it worked fine. Be sure to season your plates well before trying to use jellies or cheese on them. All in all the wafflebaker works well, but the quality could be much better (especialy for the price!).
Customer Review: Waffles almost like moms Summary: 5 Stars
Well, I remember my mom having this type of waffle maker. I looked for one for years. Yes I know this one is differently made. But cooking waffles on it has sure brought back those memories. I can't wait to try and do sandwitches on the other side. I do wish that the plate were dishwasher safe but I am glad they pop off so that you can clean them easily.
As for my waffle recipe, I just used the one on the back of the Jiffy Baking mix box. While mixing my ingredients, I preheated my grill for about 5 minutes with the setting about 3/4 of the way on the waffle setting. Then I sprayed with cooking spray. I poured my batter and in about 6 minutes my waffles were done. My husband likes his waffles a little less brown than I do so his were done in 4-5 minutes.
It is very hot, so be sure to take precautions not to have it where children can touch it. Also, steam comes out the side while cooking, so be careful of that.
Customer Review: My suggestion...don't buy it! Summary: 1 Stars
My suggestion for those reading this review is don't buy this product. I received my waffle iron and sent it back for a refund. The outside of the unit got extremely hot when I turned it on...so hot that I put a note next to it that no one in the family should accidentally touch it until it cooled down. I can't imagine cooking with this thing.
I'm very disappointed with Black and Decker for putting their name on it. It is made with the flimsiest of metal and the cheapest of materials. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'm now somewhat leary of any product that has Black and Decker's name on it.
After I returned this item, I ordered the Chef's Choice M840 WafflePro Express Waffle Maker and I love it! It is made with much better materials and it has additional features on it that the Black and Decker doesn't.
I wonder why it's so hard to find a traditional wafflemaker these days?
Customer Review: Happy Mom Summary: 4 Stars
My mother had wanted this Black & Decker Grill and Waffle Maker for some time. She was excited to have old fashion waffles and not Belgium's. Because she has limited space for new gadgets in the kitchen she always hopes for one that has multi-functionality. This matched those requirements. For Christmas we got her the grill and waffle maker, she was thrilled. I was with her for the first use and we took it all apart and washed it, which appeared easy and basic. I have an electric grill that is horrible to clean because the plates don't come off. This one the plates come off easily. The waffles we made the first time were great! My only critiques are that it seems much less durable then it should. The hinge has a lot of movement in it so it feels cheap. If your main use will be as a grill or you have a large family you may want to find something else, the grill space is small. Mom's happy with it.. and isn't that all that counts!?
Customer Review: Awesome Waffle Maker! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the traditional waffle maker I am accustomed to! We sued to have one of these when I was a kid, and I loved waffles! Not sure what happenned to it, but I have one again, and am loving it!
I have not used the grill/griddle side of the plates, but that is a great feature to have! The unit will actually fully open up, so both grills are available, but you do have a gap between them. Swapping the plates out is easy too! There is a metal clip you press to release the plate, and it can pop right out. Just make sure it is cool! I worried that the clip would allow the plates to pop out unintentionally, but they hold in tight!
This waffle maker makes the traditional style waffles, kind of akin to those you can buy frozen at the store. They are great! Nothing like fresh waffles!
I am really happy with my Black & Decker Waffle Maker, and if you want to make waffles, you should give it a try!
