Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker FC150BR InfraWave Speed-Cooking Countertop Oven, BlackCustomer Review: Idiotic Control Panel: 3.5 Stars. EDIT: it broke, 2 stars for effort. Summary: 2 Stars
UPDATE: It broke after two weeks of use. It appears Amazon is no longer selling and there currently is no good alternative. Notwithstanding B&D's subpar showing, this type of oven is great. Infrared toaster ovens cut down in their prime?? Going the way of the betamax, the electric car, Caravaggio, The Doors, Jello 123?? And NO, I don't want a NuWave chicken and carrot cooker thing!! Don't insult me or my countertop with that mess.
I'm now convinced (supported by some internet sleuthing) that the Panasonic NB-G100P-S is the holy grail of this genre.

Huge fan of this type of oven. Way better than a microwave or a toaster oven. I own the seemingly discontinued "Panasonic NB-G100P-S" and decided to order the B&D as a gift. I noticed a couple of models, including the Panasonic,is no longer offered on amazon and elsewhere. Not sure what's up with that but my Panasonic still working great after a couple years. At any rate, choices are limited when ordering on Amazon and this one seemed decent. And it is. But the control panel is a victim of the engineers over thinking the design and underestimating the user's intelligence. How? Because it's all based on presets! As if you are too stupid to input 5 minutes at 375 degrees all on your own. Yes, there is initially no simple way to input the two most basic functions of an oven: time and temp. And when it comes to the types of presets, I hope you typically only eat pizza and casserole in your household. I barely even know what a casserole is but that's probably a personal problem.
However, YES, you can ultimately achieve a manual setting that allows you to control time and temp, but this requires about seven steps, that admittedly have become pretty simple by now, and is the only thing saving this oven from being returned. Still irksome.
Another big problem is the fact that if you open the door to make adjustments/test your food, it cancels the heating cycle and thus you have to start all over. It's designed as a safety feature, but that's the problem with the design of this thing: it's like an oven designed by an obnoxious paternal lab geek, convinced that the average user's ability to handle a simple oven is an epic burden too great for the masses to fathom. You can bypass this by jamming and holding a knife into the trigger sensor, overriding the shut off while you finesse your "casserole". Nice to have three arms in this scenario.
Bottom line, yes it cooks pretty well, no it's not just a couple of underpowered halogen lamps as suggested by a couple other reviews, but the interface and auto cancel sucks.
Likes: - Good size interior
- Nice clear window
- The infrared technology itself, it actually works pretty good here
- Long cooking times available (up to an hour)
- Useful tray grabber thing
- Broil function
Dislikes: - Interface/control panel: all based on presets
- Toast setting is not great for denser breads
- Auto shut off when door is open
- Feels a little cheap
- did I mention that the interface SUCKS??
