Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker EK700 9-Inch Electric Carving Knife, WhiteCustomer Review: Black and Decker electric knife Summary: 4 Stars
I have owned this electric knife for over a year now and we use it almost daily. Our first knife was a Presto Pride and we had it for many years before it died. We also own the Presto Pride bread slicing guide. When I looked for a replacement, this knife seemed the closest in description to what we originally owned.
When we used it for the first time, the knife cut just as well as our old one. What I was surprised about was the weight of the knife in my hand. It is much heavier than our first one. It is also "fatter" around and my hand cannot close around the bottom end of it. Luckily, you don't have to hold the bottom, the knife gets skinny enough right near the power button you press.
The Pros: 1. It is still running well after our first year. The weight makes me think that the gears are made of metal and not plastic like some of the other knives. (I cannot verify this as I have not taken my knife apart.)
2. It has a "lock" switch on the power button to keep you from accidently cutting when you are not ready. Both the switch and the button are easily pushed with one finger.
3. It is easily operated by any adult with regular arm strength. No complaints for how it operates.
Cons: 1. It IS heavy! My younger children don't cut the bread because they can't balance the knife with only one hand.
2. The knife blade has an angle in it right where it locks into the handle. I am not sure why the manufacturer decided to put this angle in it, but it makes the length of the knife too short for our bread cutting guide. The blade slips out of the far side of the guide and cuts the bread crooked. Since we still had our first knife blades (Presto), we simply inserted the blades into the Black and Decker handle and "Presto!" (ha ha) the knife works great! It is still sharp and the knife locked smartly into place. It does not jiggle or overheat. It works perfectly every time. We have saved the new knife for when we cut meat or other items.
3. Some might consider this a disadvantage. The power button you press to activate the knife blades is bowed out; it is not flat. Sometimes if my finger is a little moist, the shape makes my finger slip to the bottom of the long button. I got used to it after a while and was no longer afraid that my finger would slip off the button because there is a lip or edge there that catches my finger and stops it from any further slipping.
Overall, it has been a very good replacement. Maybe the manufacturer could lengthen the knife so that it would fit all bread cutting guides. Other than that, we really like it!
