Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker EHC650 2-Speed Food Chopper with 3-Cup Bowl

Customer Review: Chops extremely well, but ...
Summary: 3 Stars

As a chopper to use on a daily basis, this is unbeatable. The blades are much more substantial than on other products of this size. However, you have to be very careful with the plastic bowl. The center section that holds the blade has begun to break. Currently half of the circular holder (in the middle) is gone. Although it will still hold the blade, if it breaks any more, it probably won't. I'm going to have to find a replacement for the plastic bowl. October 18, 2005 update: Guess what? I contacted Black & Decker online, and they have a company that they refer you to that handles their replacement parts. In this case they are sending me a complimentary new 3 cup plastic bowl. I wish I could change my rating upward; this is real customer service. July 5, 2007 update: Since I received the replacement bowl, I have used this appliance constantly, that is, three to five times a week. I have had no problems with the center section of the replacement bowl. February 8, 2008 update: Note that when Amazon runs this item for $12.99, it is really a screaming deal.

Customer Review: NOT a Time-Saver.
Summary: 2 Stars

I wouldn't recommend this product if you're looking to save time chopping vegetables such as onions and peppers.
It takes too much time to:
1) cut the produce into small enough pieces to fit in the processor.
2) chop in multiple batches because you can't even fit one large onion or bell pepper into the processor.
3) fit the motor top onto the base (I find it hard to fit it on properly, and then you can't turn it on unless the top is on perfectly because of the safety switch.)
4) clean the device.

I find it faster, less frustrating, and get better results if I just chop my veggies by hand. The one thing it has come in handy for is chopping nuts. It does nuts well. It might be good for making salad dressings, but I haven't tried that. I'm giving it 2 stars to discourage people from buying another plastic made-in-china gadget that is going to wind up in a landfill after it takes up space in your cabinet for a few years. You should probably get a full-size food processor if you're trying to save time.

Customer Review: It really does turn food into mush!
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this based on excellent reviews. I bought it to chop up chunks of vegetable waste to use in my worm composting bin. I threw in bits of bell peppers, carrots, cabbage, etc. Sometimes it works great, but often times the larger chunks would get caught on the blade instead of being sliced clean through. Then I'd have to remove the blade, pull the chunk off, and start over.

I know some people might blame me for not pre-chopping the bits up small enough, etc, but I also have a Cuisinart mini food-prep processor and it has NO TROUBLE chopping through the same thing. Compared to the Cuisinart, this chopper has less power, the blade is duller, and the chopper can't go backwards. I can't tell you how handy it is for the blade to go backwards until you get food stuck on a blade and you have to disassemble the thing.

The only nice thing I'd say about this unit is that it has a nice concept -- liquids don't leak out through the spindle like most other food processors.
It is also fairly easy to clean.

Customer Review: One of the most useful kitchen gadgets I own
Summary: 5 Stars

I received the Ergo as a Christmas gift. At first, I really didn't think it would see much action - we'd just purchased a higher-end combination blender/processor with a gift certificate, and planned on using it often.

Six months later, and guess which has spent more time out of the closet? The Ergo. It's so very light and simple and surprisingly effective, and, unlike the blender/processor, you can store what you've chopped in the fridge right in the container! The plastic foot/lid is pure genius. I love the unit's compactness and clean, solid design.

Cleanup is a breeze. Even though the top isn't submersible, I've had no problem wiping it thoroughly enough with a soapy wet cloth if I take care of it directly after chopping. The other parts are all billed as dishwasher-safe, but it takes our family of two about three or four days to fill the dishwasher, and I use the chopper more often than that.

My cute little Ergo has become a true kitchen essential. I'd be one very unhappy cook if someone were cruel enough to take it away!

Customer Review: The most used applicance in my kitchen
Summary: 5 Stars

In terms of the usage this little chopper gets in my kitchen, almost daily, this is the best investment I've ever made for any small appliance; and I cook a lot. I bought it when my food processor died, as an "interim" chopper while deciding which food processor to buy. Never happened. The B&D chopper is perfect for my small kitchen: doesn't take any counter space, cleans quickly, and chopps almost everything you throw at it quickly and evenly. I said "almost" because it doesn't chopp herbs well unless you mix them with a liquid or something more solid, such as onions or garlic, but this also happened with my older food processor and I always end up chopping them by hand. I also have a KitchenAid mixer and a great blender, and they take care of any job this chopper is not designed to do(soups, kneading, whipping, etc.) making the need for a food processor unnecesary in my kitchen. I even use it to make quick sorbets with frozen fruit and yogurt or juice! I got another one for my son, and he loves it too. Highly recommended!!!
