Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker EHC650 2-Speed Food Chopper with 3-Cup Bowl

Customer Review: Quick & Easy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ever wish you could chop up an onion in 2 seconds? It's possible with this little beauty. Instant bread crumbs? No sweat! How about shaved ice? It's a snap!

The Black & Decker EHC650 Ergo 3-Cup Food Chopper is unlike anything I have used before. It's SAFE and EASY to use. The best part is the clean-up: There really isn't any. It has only three parts! There's the cup, the powerful blade that slips into the cup, and the ergonomic top. The top is actually the motor - and it fits comfortably in your hand.

It's so easy to use:T
Step 1: Take the one-pound chopper off the shelf.
Step 2: Take off the cover and fill the container.
Step 3: Put the cover on and push one of the two buttons (one's fast and one's slow).

Two settings - fast-pulse and slow-pulse - give you flexibility in how coarse you want your food to be chopped. It even purees!

The see-through container lets you see the food as it is being chopped.

Don't need all those chopped onions right now? Use what you need then pop the handy lid on the container and store it in your fridge.

I highly recommend this product based on its easy of use and ease of clean-up.

This is the best electric food chopper I ever used.

Customer Review: The good, the bad and the, well, so-so.

I went out to the store the day before Thanksgivig in desire (not really need) of a small chopper to make this parsley and lemon thing to stuff my turkey. The store I went to had this unit. I bought it on a whim and yes, it did the job, but it doesn't do ALL jobs. The herb and citrus mixture chopped great. However, when I went to make chili and wanted to chop onions and bell peppers, all I got was MUSH. It was usable mush, but not chopped in little diced pieces like I like. Then, today, I made basil pesto - it worked "OK". Actually, today's shortcoming may have been because the parmigiano regiano I used was old and really hard. The poor chopper had trouble chopping it up. Then I opened a new package and the softer cheese grated up fabulously. When I finished the pesto, I had two issues: 1. I put the lid on to let the pesto rest - the lid did not fit completely (it is not "airtight" as stated by others.) and 2.) although I "gently" cleaned the top motor unit by hand, the aroma of basil and garlic remains. What if I wanted to use this for chopping something for a non-savory or sweet dish? Black and Decker has something here but, they need to improve it by putting some sort of washable barrier between the bowl and the the motor.

Customer Review: No more onion tears
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to simplify chopping onions. I can't stand the fumes, the tears, the drama of it all. This little beauty is amazing. I try not to get "uni-taskers" as Alton Brown calls them, and I was a little concerned this might be considered one, but I got the Food Chopper just before Thanksgiving last year and went to town.
I used it to get the entire meal prepped and I saved so much time and it was effortless. All of the onions, celery, carrots, mushrooms, you name it that I needed to saute for the stuffing was chopped in no time. Garlic is super easy. The only thing you need to be concious of is not overfilling the bowl and to cut your veggies, etc into similar sizes so they get chopped uniformly, but that goes for any processor.
I use this all the time now for prepping bases for my soups, roasts, salsas. It is wonderful for chopping garlic in bulk, I still use a knife for one or two cloves, but if I need to mince a bunch, out comes the Food chopper and it is done in seconds.
It really is a great little tool for the kitchen when you have a project that you don't want to lug out the giant food processor for, or its just too big to do with your knife and you want to save some time.

Customer Review: a must in my kitchen
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this chopper-- I purchased 1/07 and I use it every day for chopping all kinds of items!! I would be lost w/o it!!
Three cups makes a nice amount of material and can be used a few times for 6-9 cups...and unlike the bigger processors --very EASY clean-up!!

I use this marvelous machine to chop veggies for soups and salads and anything I use veggies in which is practically everything... I make oatmeal finer in this chopper for cake mixes and for adding to ingredients to make them more nutritional.
I frequently make non meat burgers and use this chopper to "puree" up the beans I use and to chop up different beans together and the veggies I also use in these burgers. This chopper chops much finer than the last chopper I had and there are 2 speeds on this chopper...
so if you want a coarser chop, then use the lower setting and your pulse on/off will give you total control. For the mere $15 I paid for it last year on sale here -- it has served me well a multitude of times over it's worth!!

I give it 5 well deserved stars... even if it went on me tomorrow it has served our house well and I would replace with the same item without consideration...

Customer Review: Good value.

This is my 3rd mincer/chopper. I've been using this for almost 3 months, a few times a week, to chop veggies and mince small amounts of meat, as well as occasionally milling rolled oats (so they'll cook faster). It has done a great job with all these foods, even the meats! The blades are nice and sharp, and the design is simple and comfortable. The one complaint I have is with cleaning: while the blade and container are very easy to clean, the lid/motor is NOT since obviously it isn't submersible. The manual directs the user to simply wipe it clean, but if you've just minced some meat, soap and hot water would be much more ideal, to say the least. Perhaps in the future B&D could incorporate some kind of snap-off liner for the lid, that could be removed and washed well. Right now I spray it down with rubbing alcohol and wipe it down a few times.
I would have given this unit 4 or 5 stars otherwise, because it's cheaper than most others I've seen, while still doing a great job (I realize my sanitary methods sound obsessive, and they are...I worked in a lab for years doing bacterial culture, and let's just say that I've seen what's out there, and I don't want it in my food!)
