Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker EHC650 2-Speed Food Chopper with 3-Cup BowlCustomer Review: you can lick your chops with this chopper Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent unit. It isn't that large, as the bowl is 4" tall and just a smidgen over that size wider, so it's not a giant food processor unit. But this works really really well on stuff like chopping up parsley, so that you can sprinkle chopped parsley on your soup or other food, without having the parsley get smushed and mashed. It works well on all the herbs I've tried on it so far, as it chops them into small pieces without the herbs getting smeared/smashed/smushed into something that is green but looks like green algae or green ooze, instead of being crisp. Too often when you chop herbs with a knife or mezzaluna, it takes a long time. When you use similarly sized choppers, or blenders, etc, you end up with stuff that looks like you hit part of it with a hammer such that it looks all smashed up into mushy green stuff which is not appetizing. What's really great about this chopper is that it cuts the stuff into nice separate parts in 5 to 8 seconds, and it does not leave the herbs "mushy" in appearance--instead, they are just what you want, crisp but a lot smaller in size, and the result looks crisp, not smashed, if I can convey that idea. I have other small size choppers, but they can't compare to this.
As a disclaimer, I have not had, do not now have, and will not have, any financial, employment, consulting, or other interest in what I review.
Customer Review: best all rounder Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this chopper 5 yrs. ago. It has done every job, from making smoothies, milk shakes, cold coffee to chopping veggies. Indian cooking needs freshly chopped onion, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and green chillies for almost every savory dish and this chopper has done that perfectly through all these years. Now that the little plastic case that actually holds the pin for the blade is chipping, I thought of giving better known companies, a try (since I can afford them now). First, I bought Cuisinart DLC-2 Mini Prep Plus Food Processor. It did the job well but the bowl seemed so flimsy as if it were a toy, so returned it. Next, I bought Cuisinart CSB-77 Smart Stick Hand Blender with Whisk and Chopper Attachments. Work bowl is too small and the same flimsy plastic toy like material. So returned this one too. Next, I bought KitchenAid Chef Series Food Chopper. The work bowl is strong and sturdy, but did the chopping a little too fine, more like a puree of onions than chopping. Really liked the one by kitchenaid but my black and decker does rough chop, so it does a double duty for me, as a grater too. I don't have to use the grater (since some veggies in Indian cooking need grating) at all. But with KitchenAid, I will need a grater too (and I hate to use one).
So, I'm all for Black and Decker. It's cheap (only $19) , work bowl is sturdy and lasts years.
Customer Review: Food Chopper Summary: 4 Stars
My newest treasure from Amazon came this morning about 9:00 AM, early. I ripped it open for my new West Bend can opener, love it, and my new Black and Decker food chopper which keeps toppling over. I immediately threw away the packaging and the big box everything came in to get it out to the once-a-week garbage can pick up today. I HOPE this works as well as reported by others. My biggest concern is that it keeps toppling over. I may have to go back downstairs to my little "Sam's Room" under the stairs and retrieve the 3-cup food processor which fits onto my blender, also bought from Amazon last year. Sam's Room is for bulk items from said store and other smaller storage. Again, my concern is the toppling over and now I realize I have to cut up vegetable before placing into the chopper. Oh?! I will probably just go on using my fantastic blender which does all of that plus chop ice for slurpies. But being an optimist I am opting for my newest treasure from Amazon to hold true to all the positive reviews. 4 stars is because it's top heavy and topples over and there is no way to click top section into place to the bottom section to hold it together.
Update: It can chop to a mush if you're not careful. I just chopped up red and green bell peppers with onion for black beans, almost mush, where's the color?
Customer Review: Best Little Food Chopper! Summary: 5 Stars
I was surprised and thrilled with the results this little food chopper produced. I have put-off for years buying a food processor, investing instead in a professional chef's knife. This past spring however, I was presentd with the problem of grinding hazelnuts for an Easter recipe. Wanting to buy a multi-fuctional gadget, I researched Consumer Reports and purchased an inexpensive food processor that was rated a "Best Buy". Before using, I studied the instruction booklet and realized it offered more functions than I needed. I returned the processor and went back to Consumer Reports. The B&D Ergo food chopper was it's recommendation. I ordered my chopper express mail from Amazon, made my cookies in time for Easter, and am extremely pleased with my decision. This chopper does it's job well and takes up very little storage space. I'm now eagerly searching my files for recipes deemed too 'time consuming' due to the amount of prep time required and am anticipating a whole slew of culinary delights. Like some of the other reviews, I never want to be without this chopper and have purchased a second one for use in my old age (which is still a good 25-30 years away!). I expect to make it my new gift of choice for Bridal Showers and House Warmings. Thank you Black and Decker for making such a well designed product!
Customer Review: Use This Chopper All The Time Summary: 5 Stars
I love this little tool. I try to find ways to sneak veggies into many things I cook, and this little baby helps me do it. For example, when I make spaghetti sauce or chili, I make the sauce (or chili) as usual, but add one zucchini or yellow squash and one or two carrots to the sauce. I put the veggies into the food chopper, push the button, and within seconds, the veggies are processed into a crumbly texture. Easy to sneak the good stuff into many recipes. I even found a recipe for zucchini brownies, and the Black & Decker unit processes the squash just right.
I also have put mushrooms, onions, cooked chicken breasts, cooked apples, raw apples, and other solids and liquids into this chopper, all with good results. I usually don't use this for onions, however, as the consistency of the finished product is a little inconsistent. If I process until most of the onions are just right, some larger pieces still remain. If I continue until the large pieces are "done," then the rest of the onions are mushy. Really, onions are the only thing so far that I don't like to use in this gadget.
Very happy with this product. I've had it for about eight months now, use it all the time, and so far have had no problems whatsoever with it. I bought one for my daughter this year for Christmas.
