Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker EC1200 Grand Openings Can OpenerCustomer Review: Nice redesign Summary: 5 Stars
When my last can opener gave up the ghost after giving almost twenty years of loyal service I had to find a new one. After looking at a number of models I decided upon the B&D Grand Openings. I like it a lot. It is heftier than my old one, has more balance, is taller so it can handle larger cans without having to either lift the opener or hang the can over the edge of the counter, has an easily removable cutter head for cleaning and a redesigned cutter.
My old one had the traditional round cutter, this one is knife like, which makes piercing cans much easier. Because it is knife shaped insread of circlular, it goes deeper into the can so that there is no more "jumping" where the cutter rises and doesn't cut the metal. This has always annoyed me. Having to make two and three trips around the can to get it open wasted time and caused the contents of the can to splash more.
All of that is gone now.
My wife has sight problems, being legally blind. I always had to open cans for her because she couldn't see if the can was opening correctly or not. Since we have the new opener she has had no problem at all opening cans without help from anyone.
Customer Review: The perfect gift for someone you hate! Summary: 1 Stars
Got an annoying in-law? Pull the name of a jerk out of the secret santa hat at the office? Give the most passive aggressive gift ever in the unassuming form of a simple household appliance. Delight yourself in the knowledge that the receiver will waste 5 minutes with this blasted contraption every time they need to perform the simple task of opening a can. It tears the labels and gives you a false sense of hope by poking little holes in the lid so you keep trying and it eventually mangles the can so badly that your trusty swingaway manual opener has difficulty in finishing the job.
A gift of the "Great openings" is a gift of frustration and self doubt as the user starts to wonder if it is "just them" and the device is really fine. To add insult to injury they were brilliant enough to include a "knife sharpener" on the back so that someone can be helpful and put a nice jagged edge on your nicest chefs knife.
As an appliance it fails to function but as a torture device it will excel.
Customer Review: Piece of J-U-N-K! Summary: 1 Stars
We bought this to replace our 25 year old can opener after the blade on it snapped. We looked around and quickly discovered that finding an inexpensive opener was easy but a quality opener was going to be a difficult task.
Out of shear frustration we ended up selecting this Black & Decker. At first it seemed "ok", but after just a few months we are back to using our old "manual - hand wind" opener. The reason is that the top lever is too cheaply made and it flexes. Over time (not much time!) it gets too loose to hold a can anymore. We lock it in place, it spins an inch or two and the can drops onto the counter. Repeat this scene over and over...! At the end, the lid is never (REPEAT - NEVER!) separated from the can - ever!
It's back to the hand held and a search of a decent electric continues.
Customer Review: Black & Heck...this can opener sucks! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this and immediately had problems with it. I thought I was getting a good deal, but I guess you get what you pay for sometimes. It was not catching to open the cans, then it peeled and shredded the paper around the top, and then when it was scraping the top of the can (because it wasn't opening it) it was filing off tiny bits of metal. And I don't know about you, but I don't want to feed that to anybody. Not even my con-artist sister-in-law. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because I called Black & Decker and they are replacing it for free. And when I told them that I just bought it they offered to pay for shipping as well.
Customer Review: I'm Happy With My Can Opener! Summary: 5 Stars
I couln't wait for my Sunbeam electric can opener to take a nose dive so I could buy an opener that was simple to clean! This product doesn't accumulate metal shavings and bits of paper from the can labels on any component of the opener because the housing of the opener is smooth and sleek. I hated always having to scrub my old opener blade with a small brush and it didn't come apart so that made it harder to clean and handle. I especially like the way you can remove the blade assembly for cleaning . . . it makes things so much more sanitary. It opens cans in a snap and I love it!
