Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker DCM7 Cup-at-a-Time Personal 12-Ounce Coffeemaker, WhiteCustomer Review: Exactly what I wanted Summary: 5 Stars
There have been many times that I wanted a cup of coffee but I didn't want to make a whole pot just for myself. So I found this B&D Cup-At-A-Time Coffeemaker, but when I saw the price I thought it must not be very good. Wrong! After looking at what other people on amazon had said about this coffeemaker I decided to purchase 2 of them; one for my mom and one for me. We both already have the whole bean coffee and grinder so we could use it now for either our 12-pot coffeemakers or our One-cup coffermakers. And we didn't have to get the special pods that other single-cup coffeemakers typically use. We did purchase the Size #1 filters; they cost about $1.80 for a box of 40. This coffeemaker is so easy to use and we are both really glad we got them. The automatic shutoff is perfect especially for my mom since she is older and tends to forget to turn off things.
Customer Review: Inconsistent performance - Flawed design Summary: 2 Stars
I ordered one of these for work, despite reading mixed reviews. This is a coffeemaker which works inconsistently and often requires you to monitor it while it is running to avoid leakage. If the steam curls the filter to one side or if the coffeemaker is not perfectly level, the coffee tends to drain down the back of the cup, onto the base, and under the unit, getting the surrounding area wet. I have tried multiple types of filters, tried different configurations, different types of cups, etc but still inconsistent performance. A design engineer friend looked at it and told me that the area where the coffee drains should be out further, to hit the center of a typical cup, rather than nearer the back. I would suggest spending the extra money and purchasing a product which works more efficiently - who has the time to babysit a coffeemaker?
Customer Review: Functional, no frills, average coffee Summary: 3 Stars
The product is as simple as a drip coffee maker gets. An on/off switch, and that's about it. I like that you don't need a special cup/mug for it, and can use any standard-sized 12 oz. coffee mug for it to brew into. I don't think it will fit a larger size. It's very compact on my desk, and brews a cup pretty fast.
But I guess with price and size, you lose some quality. The filter is a very fine mesh, and not as "open" as many other filters. With the short brew time, the resulting brew is weaker than is desirable. If you like a stronger coffee, I suggested a finer ground of beans than you would normally use for a drip machine. Paper filters may also help some.
Overall, a product for convenience, not quality, but with some brew-engineering, it may be able to turn out some decent coffee.
Customer Review: design flawed - but it works Summary: 3 Stars
I can only give this item three stars.
GOOD
1. it produces only one cup at a time
2. I do like the little 'basket' with fine screen that allows you to fill coffee grounds directly into the coffee maker - then pull it straight out to clean it out for the next day.
BAAAAD:
1. can't add water without making a mess - even if you use a little pitcher and not the ever-so-convenient cup you want it to flow back into.
2. the water perks out and spits for about 20 minutes. It doesn't stop when the water is almost empty, so when you pull the cup out, it spits coffee on the bottom of the unit. Even if you turn it off and wait 30 seconds, the heater is still hot so it spits. yuck.
I paid $9.99 and would NOT buy this model again.
Customer Review: Good product but not great Summary: 3 Stars
I only use these types of appliances to heat water for tea. I had a Black and Decker Brew and Go previously to this one cup coffee/hot water maker and I preferred that one to this one. This model will only take 8 ozs of water and that fills a small mug. You can't add any more water to the reservoir so that is what you get! A taller mug will not fit under the dispenser so when the hot water starts coming out (almost immediately) be ready with a small cup as you won't be able to jam in a larger mug. Heats efficiently and is quick. Would not order again if I could find a slightly larger one. Got a $9.99 one at CVS but had to return it as it tasted of plastic after 20 heating and dispensing of water!! It was disgusting. This is a reliable model and it has a clean - no plastic - taste.
