Customer Review: Great little coffee maker

I got this coffee maker for Christmas to replace a Black & Decker Brew and Go coffee maker that I had for 9 years. I wanted something that I could use to brew my daily 20oz of coffee to take to work, but also something that could brew a little bit more for lazy weekend mornings. My Brew and Go served me very well, so for the price I figured I'd give this one a chance.
There are a number of 4-5 cup coffee makers on the market over a large price range. I was looking for something that was simple that brewed a decent tasting pot of coffee. I didn't need anything programmable, and I liked the idea of the permanent filter rather than spending money on the paper filters. It also needed to be small as counter space in my house is limited. This fit the bill perfectly. I had thought about pursuing one of the pod systems like Keurig. They are very convenient systems and the coffee tastes great, but there's 3 problems that push me away from them. First of all, they are very large and take up a lot of counter space that we don't have. Second, the pods/k-cups are expensive, and the brand of coffee that I like is not available in k-cups (the "My K-cup" filter is a royal pain to use). Third, and most important, they don't brew enough coffee at once. Most travel mugs are 16 oz and the Brew and Go makes exactly 16 oz of coffee. A couple of years ago I searched out an awesome 20 oz coffee mug that allowed me to brew 16 oz of coffee and still have room for milk. The largest Keurig size is 12 oz and that's only on the super expensive model.
I normally brew about 3 cups (3rd line on the side of the carafe) in the morning. The filter is circular with a flat bottom so I don't think using any less than 3 Tbsp of coffee would work. In contrast, the Brew and Go has a conical filter so using 2 Tbsp of coffee works there. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the initial pot of coffee needs to be a little hotter. I realize that the temperature of the water has an effect on the final taste of the coffee, but the coffee tastes fine to me. I usually leave the carafe on the hot plate for a couple of minutes, and this brings the coffee to an acceptable temperature. On weekends I'll make a full pot of coffee and enjoy it throughout the morning. All in all, this coffee maker is a perfect fit for my needs.
There are a couple of things that could be improved for this model. When I open the lid, condensation that had built up on the underside of the lid drops down on to the heating element and then hot steam shoots out of the spout on the underside of the lid. This could result in being burned if it happened while you were reaching in there to pull the filter out. I wish the filter holder had some sort of stopper that held the flow of coffee when you took the carafe out. This would allow you to grab a cup mid-brew, but it would also prevent coffee from dripping onto the hot plate when you take the carafe out. That makes a mess and make burnt coffee smell. I think this model could also benefit from a conical filter rather than flat bottom.
